Volunteer and Parent Engagement Opportunities

Much of the feedback from our school climate surveys over the past few years have highlighted the need for better communication between the district and our parents.  To meet that need, we are very excited to announce that we have rolled out ParentSquare!

ParentSquare is a communication platform.  Through the platform, you’ll be able to:

*Receive all district, school, and classroom communication via email, text, or app

*View the school and classroom calendar and RSVP for events

*Easily sign up to volunteer and/or bring items

*Securely receive important documents like report cards and other student documents

For the best ParentSquare experience, we recommend that you download and install the app.  The name is ParentSquare, and it can easily be found in your device’s app store.  If you don’t have a device, no need to worry: the platform is capable of both text and email, and you can log on via the web as well.  ParentSquare receives its contact information from the Ascender Parent Portal.  Please take a moment to make sure that you have the latest contact information on file there.

Flashback: Olyvia Mayfield

Stacey Class of 2016

By: Curtis Roshio, sophomore

When did you go to Stacey, and did you graduate here?

I started school at Stacey in 2010 when I was in 6th grade, and I graduated from there in 2016.

What can you recall about Stacey?

I remember the school being pretty small compared to most high schools here, and the construction of the auditorium; we were the first class to graduate in there.

What topic or subjects did you enjoy the most in school?

My favorite classes were math and journalism.

Did you participate in any clubs, sports, or school events?

I participated in Academic UIL, FCCLA, and I was assistant editor of the yearbook and treasurer of my class during my senior year.

What do you remember about the yearbook class?

I have so many memories from creating the yearbook and working on Journalism assignments in Mr. Keller’s class. The 2015/2016 yearbook was really intricate, and we created a lot of the doodles and handwriting on each page ourselves. It was a lot of work but worth it, I still love the way it looks. I loved learning how to utilize photography and Photoshop too!

Who has had the greatest impact on your life—your hero?

The persons with the greatest impact on my life would probably be my sisters. One just turned 11 and she’s the most confident person I know! My other sister is 21, she works really hard and we have fun together (whenever we aren’t picking on each other).

What words of wisdom do you have for today's seniors?

Keep working hard and focusing on yourself, go at your own pace. Spend more time enjoying being a teenager and having minimal responsibilities.

What are you presently engaged in in terms of your job, studies, or daily activities?

Right now I work in an office at UT Health. I actually do use some math AND journalism skills at my job now, so I’m thankful I was able to learn what I did in  school.

Is there anything about your life then or now that you would like to share?

I just turned 24 this month and I’m about to get married this weekend (to another Stacey High School graduate, funnily enough).

Thank You Olyvia and congratulations!

Stacey Flashback: Nadine Tuazon

Class of 2017

By: Isabella Garza, 9th grade

Tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Nadine Tuazon and I’m currently a registered nurse at UT Southwestern in Dallas! My dad was in the US Air Force so I moved to San Antonio when I was in 4th grade. We moved to Lackland when I was in 5th grade and stayed all throughout high school. I moved to Austin after graduation and recently moved to Dallas to start my first new nursing job.

What are some of your favorite memories at Stacey?

My favorite memories were being a part of the volleyball team all 4 years , student council events, volunteering in FCCLA and hanging out with my friends.

What’s your favorite Halloween movie?

Halloweentown lol!

What was your major in college and where did you go?

I went to their University of Texas at Austin and majored in nursing.

If you could go back, would you stay at Stacey or move to a bigger school?

I wouldn’t change anything if I could go back because I met some wonderful people I still keep in contact with them today.

How was the process from high school to college?

It was difficult at first to transition from high school to college because of the huge size difference of students at university. But after joining different clubs and organizations, it made my high school to college transition way easier.

How many years did you go to Stacey jr/sr high school and when did you graduate?

I went to Stacey all throughout middle school and high school and graduated in 2017!

Are you going to dress up for Halloween, if so what are you going to be?

I’m actually working on Halloween lol but maybe I’ll bring a halo to wear to work!

Thank You, Nadine!

People and Places of Texas

What is special about the people and places of Texas?  Texas IS a special place.  It is a state of golden fields, rolling hills, pine forests, and towering mountains.

Texas is also home to hundreds of plants and animals.  There are vast differences from one area of Texas to another.  It is often said that "Texas is a whole "nuther country".

More than 26 MILLION people live in Texas.  The population of the state has grown faster than the population of the United States as a whole in every decade since 1850.

It is expected to continue growing and becoming more ethnically diverse in the future.  today, Texans claim ties to countries on FIVE continents.  These countries include Greece, Poland, Russia, Lebanon, Syria, China, and Vietnam.

Texas's largest cities developed in the eastern part of the state, where people originally settled because of the fertile soil, which was good for growing crops.

Did you know that DALLAS started out as a cotton market?  Dallas grew even MORE when oil was discovered.  More than 6,7 million people live in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington area

Regardless of where Texans live, the state's vast transportation and communication networks link major metropolitan areas with the people and resources of smaller towns and cities.

It is often said that "Texas is a whole 'nuther country" with an independent spirit and love of the land. Texas products and energy resources move throughout the United States on roads, railroads, and in pipelines.

Stacey HS UIL Academics offers 16 different events, which covers a range of interests.

Students can choose to participate in one event or a few events.  An event they already know or one they want to learn more about!

You’ll meet with your UIL Academics Coach once a week and study some on your own to prepare for the District Meet in March!

It’s a great organization and looks great on college and scholarship applications! Those that do well at the District Meet advance to the Regional Meet in April.  If students advance to the State Meet (at any grade level), they are eligible to apply for special UIL Scholarships their Senior Year!

Good Information

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a common condition that makes it hard to work with language. Some experts believe that between 5 and 10 percent of people have it. Others say as many as 17 percent of people show signs of reading challenges.

People don't outgrow dyslexia, but there are teaching approaches and strategies that can help them improve their reading skills and manage dyslexia challenges. People of any age can be tested for dyslexia, although the tests are different for adults than for kids.

Dyslexia is a learning disability associated with reading.  Dyslexic people have trouble reading at a good pace and without mistakes. They may also have a hard time with reading comprehension, spelling, and writing, but these challenges aren’t related to intelligence.

Wear Grey/Silver- Tuesdays

World Dyslexia Awareness Day was Tuesday, October 4th during Dyslexia Awareness Week. Participants wore grey/silver on Tuesday, October 4th, to show their support for Dyslexia students at Lackland ISD and around the World.

Positive Behavior Supports for the Home
Families and caregivers should consider using positive
behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) in
their homes on a daily basis. It is especially helpful
when events disrupt normal routines – events like
worldwide health pandemics. This session will provide
recommendations for families and caregivers on how
to use PBIS to continue to support their students’
social and emotional growth and minimize behavioral
disruptions in the home.

Parent Technology Resources for Dyslexia
The research is definitive regarding technology and
instruction for students with dyslexia. When students
have access to technology, their overall performance
improves. Technology tools allow students with dyslexia
to be equal participants in school-based learning
experiences. Technology is not to take the place of
direct and explicit instruction but when technology is
successfully integrated we can build students up and
allow them to work at their capability.
