National School Lunch Week October 9-13
Learning is tough work—and kids need fuel if they’re going to learn! That’s why a healthy midday meal is crucial to the growing children who go to school. Since 1962, when President John F. Kennedy created National School Lunch Week (NSLW), this annual observance has promoted the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life and the impact it has both in and out of the classroom. The Importance of School Lunch
Even though National School Lunch Week was declared in 1962, the National School Lunch Program goes back even further, back to 1946. Created to provide nutritious meals to children from low-income families who might not otherwise have access to a daily meal, NSLP ensures the health and well-being of all public school students, boosts academic performance by giving students the fuel they need to succeed, and closes the opportunity gap for children across the country. Today, the National School Lunch Program serves nearly 30 million children every school day. Not only does it reduce childhood hunger, but it also supports American agriculture.

National Boss’s Day
Boss’s Day is dedicated to all employers and provides a prospect of improving the liaison between employers and their staff. Many workers dedicate this day to their supervisors for various reasons, such as supporting staff with their jobs and careers. This observance also gives employees a chance to recognize those in supervisory positions.
The concept of National Boss Day began in 1958 when Patricia Bays Haroski, then an employee at State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Illinois, registered the holiday with the United States Chamber of Commerce. She designated October 16 as the special day because it was her father's birthday. Haroski's purpose was to designate a day to show appreciation for her boss and other bosses. She also hoped to improve the relationship between employees and supervisors.
Four years later in 1962, Illinois Governor Otto Kerner backed Haroski's registration and officially proclaimed the day. The event’s popularity is growing outside the United States and is now also observed in countries such as Australia, India, and South Africa. |

NS-122 Annular Eclipse Launch The UMD Nearspace Team is en route to San Antonio, Texas, to launch two balloons during the annular solar eclipse on Saturday, 14 October 2023. The team of 18 students has packed up all their gear, payloads, balloons, and parachutes - and they will all be meeting up in Concan Texas, west of San Antonio.
The plan is for half the team to spend Friday, 13 October, doing outreach with elementary and middle school kids at JBSA Lackland, while the other half of the team scouts out the area west of San Antonio for a good launch site and a site for setting up the ground station. These locations will depend on weather and predicted ground track of the balloons but are likely to be either near Concan or Utopia, Texas.
We will be flying one balloon with all the eclipse payloads on board: UMD Vent System (to achieve float at altitude), Iridium & Occams board (for tracking balloon), Pterodactyl (sensor suite gathering atmospheric science data), RFD900 (another sensor suite that can send data telemetry in flight), Insta 360 panoramic camera, and Streaming Video (Montana LIVE) system.
The second balloon will be carrying several UMD unique payloads: GHOUL (UMD vent system in the neck of the balloon), Command (multiply redundant tracking and data module), SLAPSH (mini solar cell solar harvester), more cameras (another Insta 360 and panoramic camera) , MCAT (Methane sensing payload), and Laura (Long Range radio system).
The weather for Saturday is looking acceptable (not that we have much choice at this point) - it should be warm and sunny, but probably some high winds will make the launch operation challenging! We will be launching just before 11AM so that the balloons can reach their float altitude and establish a steady float ideally before maximum occultation of the Sun occurs, which will be at 11:56AM. Details still to be worked out include: where exactly we will be launching from, where we will set up our ground station, and timing for the whole operation.
Balloon Launch Details
When: Saturday 14 October 2023
Live Updates
You can track the balloons in flight on the APRS website using the following callsigns: KC3SKW-8 and KC3SKW-9. And, feel free to follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok for updates on the program's activities.
The incredible students and Dr. Bowden from the University of Maryland provided our 5th and 8th-grade students the opportunity to engage in a mock balloon launch and classroom discussion own what it takes to launch a balloon into the atmosphere. They gave each of the students goodie bags complete with glasses for viewing the eclipse tomorrow stickers and a small digitally printed turtle, go Terrapins! Please take caution as the turtles are small and could be a choking hazard for younger children!

To share that learning with our community, each of our monthly GT Corner will feature an "Icon of the Month" so you can practice with your child(ren) at home! Each newsletter will provide an explanation of the icon selected for that month with sample questions that spark deeper thinking or complexity of a topic. We hope you will enjoy challenging yourselves as well!
