Admin Alley

We celebrate National I.T. Professionals Day on the third Tuesday of every September, on September 19 this year, to recognize the technical experts — network engineers, system administrators, database admins, ethical hackers, and many more types of I.T. professionals — that make sure our computer systems run smoothly. It takes a solid set of skills and talents to fill the shoes of an I.T. pro so, today, we say thanks to the people who come to fix our devices when they stop working the way they should — the behind-the-scenes operators without whom we’d be back in front of an archaic chalkboard, doing things the hard way.

National I.T. Professionals Day was created in 2015 in an effort to show appreciation for the tech wizards who take care of the nuts and bolts so that the average worker’s station stays hooked up to the company network and operates flawlessly.

If you’re old enough, you remember when the only meaning of ‘attachment’ was an actual piece of paper fastened with a metal paper clip to a memo that had been copied physically on a mimeograph machine. Technology has practically advanced at the speed of light since then and someone has always had to keep up with the latest technical advent in order to manage any misfires in a given system. These guys and gals are nothing less than essential to successful business practices. Today, we give them a pat on the back, buy them a cup of coffee, or just say, “Thanks!” Your I.T. pros will appreciate it.

Lackland ISD Shares TASA-CMSi Curriculum Audit Results

Lackland ISD partnered with the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) to conduct a curriculum audit.  The purpose of the audit was to provide a roadmap to efficiently and effectively meet the improvement goals outlined in the 2022-2027 LISD Strategic Plan.  Lackland Superintendent, Dr. Burnie Roper, also wanted to ensure that district systems and processes are current and appropriately designed to institutionalize continued improvement and effective program sustainability.   Preliminary audit findings and recommendations were presented to the LISD Board of Trustees at the August board meeting.  A copy of the audit’s executive summary may be found at this link.

Stacey Happenings

On September 5, 2023, Kyrie Yarbrough recorded her 1000th assist vs. La Pryor. It took us a little time to celebrate her accomplishment because we wanted to wait to celebrate in front of the Stacey home crowd. Kyrie is our junior setter and she is always in attack mode. We can’t wait to celebrate the next 1000!

Last week the Stacey Eagles Cross Country team went to Shiner to run. Katen Fredin (13:03) and Mia Flores (13:14) placed 3rd and 5th respectively in the Varsity Girls’ 2 Mile race. Zach Born (18:43) placed 9th in the Varsity Boys’ 5K race. Eduardo Barajas (12:05) and Tripp Quint (12:48) led the JV boys’ to a 2nd place overall finish in the JV Boys’ 2 mile race. Jarred Dunn, an 8th grader, won the Junior High Boys race with a time of 11:49. Congratulations to all the runners that competed and good luck at Falls City on Saturday.

Meet Mrs. Herrera Garza!

By: Breana Burkham, 9th grade

One of the new faces around the Stacey campus is

Mrs. Julieta Herrera Garza.

She teaches Discovery Language,  6th, 7th, & 8th grade Spanish, and High School Spanish 1.

How long have you been in education?
I’ve been in education for almost 25 years. I started as a volunteer helping my own children’s teachers in their pre-k classrooms.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?
When I see my students become successful learning a second language

Why did you want to become a teacher?
I have been always interested in helping others. I truly believe teaching is one of the best ways to help others in many aspects.

When did you realize you wanted to become a teacher?
It was during undergraduate school. While there, I had to complete some hours tutoring as part of my graduation requirements. That’s when I realized how much I love helping others be successful while
they are learning something new.

How long have you been teaching?
This is my 17th year teaching. I started in the bilingual program where my students were native Spanish speaking learning English; then I went to the Dual Language program were I had a combination of English speaking students and Spanish speaking students learning both languages; after that, I worked in the Spanish Immersion program where I had English speaking students learning Spanish all day long! From there I went to teach Spanish at the High School...and now I’m here!

Do you have pets? If so, how many?
I don’t currently have pets. I had two, Muffy and Sparkle. They lived with us for 15 and 17 years respectively. They were part of our family and we took them everywhere we went including Mexico, California, and Florida! I miss them so much.

Tell us about your family.
My husband is retired military. He retired from Lackland AFB in 2018 and he’s currently studying at UTSA. My son Sebastian works at Laughlin AFB as a civilian for the Air Force. He holds a master’s degree in chemistry. My daughter Cynthia just got married to my son-in-law Bernardo in June. She was selected by the Air Force as an officer and will go to training in January right after she completes her dual Master’s degree program at UT Health in December.

What are your hobbies?
I love my plants! I love to clean my house and decorate it. Something that I recently discovered; I enjoy solving puzzles! I usually frame them once I complete them. The last one I completed was 3,500 pieces!

Where are you from?
I’m from North Mexico. From a small town called Monclova in the State of Coahuila. A car trip to my town is only 5 hours. My parents, sibling and extended family are all in Mexico. They come often to visit us and we go there every year around Christmas time.

Gifted & Talented Corner

Supporting Overly Emotional Children with Peer Interaction:

Even without the intensities / overexcitabilities so common in our gifted population, kids can be overly emotional. What do I mean by overly emotional?

I mean that they:

*overreact to even mild stimuli;

and/or

*base decisions on emotions rather than reason at a level inappropriate for their age;

and/or

*engage in a level of emotionality that interferes with their ability to be happy / effective / have friends / be successful in school / home / religious / extracurricular activities.

Typing this list makes me realize I know a lot of adults like this as well!

Lackland ISD Gifted and Talented Services

In alignment with the Texas State Plan for Services for Gifted and Talented Students, the mission of the gifted services in LISD is to provide learning opportunities that challenge and develop students identified for gifted services through creative, self-directed learning. This can be seen through the development of innovative projects and performances that reflect students’ individuality, as well as through honed research skills and advanced critical thinking.

Gifted and Talented services are educational interventions for students who perform at or show the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment.

Elementary: Identified students in grades K-5 are cluster grouped with GT-trained teachers in the core subject areas of English language arts, social studies, science, and mathematics.  Services for identified Kindergarten students begin March 1 as mandated by the state.

Secondary: Identified students in grades 6-12 are provided service through Honors and AP classes with GT-trained teachers in the core subject areas of English language arts, social studies, science, and mathematics.

Lesson differentiation, and participation in the projects aligned to the Texas Performance Standards Project (TPSP) are some of the varied curricular options utilized in core GT classes.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.  Please read the Mental and Behavioral Health Tips

The return to school can be a stressful time, whether it's a child’s first day of kindergarten, a transition to middle or high school, or just the end of the freedoms of summer. It's normal for children to feel anxious about these changes. Here’s how you can help ease their worries:

*Communicate: Encourage your child to express their feelings about going back to school. Acknowledge their fears, make them feel understood, and reassure them that it's perfectly normal to feel anxious about these changes.

*Create Routines: A consistent routine fosters a sense of security in children. Establishing a regular sleep schedule, eating healthy meals, and setting aside time for homework and relaxation can help children adjust to the rhythm of the school year.

*Encourage In-person Social Interactions: Facilitate interaction with classmates to rekindle old friendships and make new ones. This may be one of the first years of schooling for many children without the COVID-19 pandemic interrupting normal social interactions. Social relationships can make the transition smoother and more enjoyable.

Recognizing and Addressing Bullying
in Youth
Bullying looks very different today than it did 20+ years
ago. In this session we will define bullying and review
the forms of bullying commonly seen among children.
We will review some of the signs and symptoms
that can communicate that our child is a victim,
perpetrator, or in some circumstances both, to bullying.
Experiencing bullying can lead to lower mental health
quality, therefore it’s important we address the issue
when it’s first suspected. Presented by The Center for
Health Care Services.
Session # 97589

Tuesday, September 26, 2023 VIRTUAL
9:00 a.m.–10:30 a.m.
Shame, Blame, and More of the Same
Let’s discuss breaking unhealthy patterns of behavior
and reinforcement. We will explore how our responses
shape behavior and may lead to the exact result we
are trying so hard to avoid. We will also challenge
ourselves to mindfully choose to respond in a different
way and gain a more desired outcome.
Session # 94313

What is Gifted/Talented--Demystifying the
Identification Process
What exactly does it mean to be in Gifted and Talented
Services in Texas? You may be surprised to know
that many of the students who benefit the most from
services have not been identified. In this session, we
will explore what Gifted Services are in Texas and what
the identification process can look like in your child’s
school. We will also talk about ways to communicate
with your child’s campus for equitable identification.
Session # 94314

Parenting With Love and Logic®, Part 1
Love and Logic® is an approach to raising children that
provides loving support from parents while at the same
time expecting children to be respectful and responsible. Love allows children to grow through their mistakes. Logic allows them to live with the consequences
of their choices. Love and Logic® is easy to use, raises
responsible children, and changes lives. By attending
this training, you will learn to use humor, hope, and
empathy to build up your adult-child relationship, provide real limits in a loving way, and learn how to teach
