*Monday Feb. 15 President's Day - Student Holiday *Feb. 16 - Feb. 19 In school learning resumes, online learning continues. Admin Alley Dear Parents/Guardians,
We hope that you and your family are safe and in good health. As we continue to experience dangerous numbers associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, we are providing some recommendations as we approach Spring Break which will occur March 8-12. Although it is highly encouraged that you do not travel, the CDC recommends that all travelers get tested with a viral test 3-5 days after travel AND stay home and self-quarantine for a full seven (7) days after travel. Even if you test negative, it is recommended that you stay home and quarantine for seven (7) days. And if anyone test positive, you should isolate yourself to protect others from getting infected. Observing these recommendations will hopefully help us control any spread of COVID-19 among our students and staff. Your child (ren) will be allowed to participate in remote learning during the time they are quarantined We wish you the very best during these difficult times. Thank you!
The following message comes from the CDC and the link provides more information.
COVID-19 Alert: Cases are Extremely High. Avoid Travel Travel increases your chance of getting and spreading COVID-19. CDC recommends that you do not travel at this time. Delay travel and stay home to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.

A Conversation with Mrs. MK by: Ariana Flores, senior Genevieve Medellin-Keller (Mrs. MK) is the high school counselor at Stacey.
Where were you born? I was born in Harlingen, Texas.
What made you want to go into the education system? I actually started out wanting to be a registered nurse. However, after having to do dissections and fainting multiple times, I realized it was not for me. My best friend was an education major and recommended that I try a couple of education courses. I did and loved it. I have never looked back.
Did you do anything else before becoming a counselor? I taught 6-7th grade Reading and I also high school Spanish.
Did you work at other schools, and if so, what were they? I taught at Devine Middle School (6-8th grade Reading). Next, I taught at Lytle High School(Spanish 1- 4 AP/ESL teacher) followed by Stacey Jr/Sr High School as a Spanish 1-5AP/ESL Teacher.
What’s your favorite part about being a counselor? My favorite part is getting to know the students and being able to guide them with their immediate and future needs. I love hearing from students when they get into their college choice, when they are awarded a college scholarship or when they sign up for service in the military. Their look of excitement brings me joy and makes me feel that maybe I played a small part in their accomplishment.
What is your favorite restaurant? Hermann Sons Steak House in Hondo. They have really good steaks and I love the salad bar.
What do you like to do in your free time? I enjoy working in the garden, crocheting, sewing, baking, and refinishing old furniture. I also love spending time with my two kiddos and husband.
What is your favorite movie? My favorite movie is The Long, Long Trailer with Lucille Ball (1953).
What music do you like? / who is your favorite musical artist? I like all types of music. What I listen to depends on my mood. (For example; I listen to Spanish music when I clean house) {NOTE: She did not answer, but let the record reflect that she likes Nickelback} ***Thank you Mrs. MK! ***
Meet Mrs. Walker! Mrs. Evangelina Walker teaches 1st grade is a UIL coach and runs the Lego club at Lackland Elementary by: Hannah Darity, freshman
Where are you from originally? Where I’m from originally always feels like a difficult question. My parents are from San Antonio, but then my dad joined the military. They moved to Colorado where I was born and then to Minot, N.D. where I spent the next 14 years of my life, after that I went to high school in Okinawa, Japan. So, I kind of feel like I’m from San Antonio because I’ve now been here for 26 years, but I do claim North Dakota too. : )
In your opinion, what’s the best part of teaching? The best part of teaching is seeing the light bulbs go off when a student that’s been struggling with something finally gets it! When they’ve been struggling with reading and all of a sudden one day they’re reading with an ease that puts a big smile on their face. It’s teaching them about life, how to handle conflicts and their emotions, not just the academia part of it.
What made you choose to teach at Lackland Elementary? I’ve wanted to be a teacher at Lackland for years! I was a teacher at another district here in San Antonio for 12 years before coming here. I had friends that were part of the school and I knew heart and soul this was the school for me. I’d heard so many great things about Lackland Elementary from the admin, teaching staff to the students. It was an easy choice.
What would your students be surprised to find out about you? My students would probably be surprised to find out that I love to sing to Disney songs! Lol, I’m a huge fan which probably sounds silly. My daughter is 25 and my son is 13 but I grew up with Disney sing alongs playing in my car and house. They just make me happy! Hakuna Mata will always put a smile on my face.
Was there any other jobs that interested you besides teaching? I thought about going into speech therapy. It’s a career that has always interested me and I would still get to work with children. I thought about going back to school a few years ago, but I haven’t done anything with it yet...
When did you decide you wanted to be a teacher? I’d always thought about being a teacher from the time I was in high school. I just wasn’t 100% sure, it wasn’t until I started taking my core classes for teaching that I was 100% convinced. I loved the classes, I loved going to the different schools for observations and working with the students. I remember just feeling giddy and excited about one day having my own classroom with my own students.
What is the most difficult part about teaching during Covid? There are a few things that make teaching through Covid difficult. I would say the greatest challenge is just keeping the kids spirits up and being positive and hopeful. I always try to show them and teach them to be positive that we’ve got to look on the positive side of things rather than the negative. I just want all my students to be safe and healthy not only physically but I care about their emotional and social well being too. That is probably the most difficult, just trying to protect them or shelter them a little bit from what’s going on in the world. THANK YOU Mrs. Walker!
Chinese New Year 2021 The Chinese New Year 2021, or the Spring Festival (Lunar New Year), will be celebrated on Friday; February 12, according the traditional Chinese Calendar. In the Chinese astrology, each year is represented by an animal and 2021 is year of the Metal Ox, which is predicted to be a lucky year. The Ox has also been celebrated in 1925, 1937, 1949,1961, 1985, 1997, 2009.
The Ox is a representation of diligence, kindness, and generosity.
This holiday is celebrated in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Australia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia and Mauritius, and also Europe, Australia, New Zealand, The United States, and Canada.
The most important New Year custom is for married couples to give "lucky money" called "lay-see" to unmarried relatives, especially children. "Lay-see" is a red packet containing "lucky money" which people believe will bring luck to both the receiver and giver. Older family members must also give lucky money to all those who are younger in the family, including those who are married.

Dr Pepper, Fritos, and Texas History In 1885, a young pharmacist experimented with different fruit flavors and the soda, Dr Pepper, was born. This was the beginning of the soda pop industry in America. There is a Dr Pepper Museum in Waco, Texas. Waco is located in the Prairie and Lakes Region of Texas.
Originating from corn dough, corn chips were pressed and baked into their iconic shape. In 1932, a Texas businessman baked the chips at night and sold them by day, calling them Fritos. Fritos AND Frito Pie taste great with Dr Pepper!!!
