Lackland ISD Recommends Renewal of District of Innovation Plan
https://www.lacklandisd.net/about/district-of-innovation/2022-2027-doi-renewal
District and community stakeholders are encouraged to review the contents of the plan and provide feedback using the public comment feature that is also available on the district’s website.
Lackland ISD will ensure that the plan is posted for a minimum of 30 days. On November 8,2021, the district innovation plan committee will hold a public hearing to receive final input and make final plan revisions. The public hearing will be held at 3:45 p.m. in the LISD Cynthia Lyon Center.
The District of Innovation concept, passed by the 84th Legislative Session in House Bill 1842, gives traditional independent school districts most of the flexibilities available to Texas’ open-enrollment charter schools. Questions concerning the DOI designation should be directed to Dr. Burnie Roper (roper.b@lacklandisd.net), Superintendent of Schools or Dr. Tonya Hyde (hyde.t@lacklandisd.net ), Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction. Meet Ms. Phillips! by Dylan Campbell, a freshman
A new teacher has arrived at Stacey Junior-Senior High School! This teacher's name is Ms. Whitney Phillips, and she is loving this new school! I was happy to be informed that I would be interviewing and sharing her teaching and personal life!
How are you enjoying Stacey so far? I love Stacey so far. It's very different from the places I've taught before, but in a good way. I love how close-knit the community seems to be. Where have you taught before? I’ve taught in Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Texas. How many years have you been teaching? This is my 9th year teaching. What grade or grades do you teach? I teach 6th and 7th grade. What subject do you teach and why? I teach math. I just kind of fell into math. I thought originally I’d teach Social Studies, but my first job needed a math teacher. Then, I fell in love with the content. Do you prefer online or paper assignments? I prefer online, but still want to see the students work either on paper or digitally. There are so many jobs in the world. What drove you to become a teacher? I’ve always wanted to teach. I used to make all my neighborhood kids sit in my “class” and even gave them homework. I love working with kids and have always felt a pull to do that. I think that kids are the best of us. Do you have any pets? I have one cat, Leo. He’s the fluffiest. What do you like to do in your free time? Sleep...and tv...and hang with my kiddos. What is your favorite food and drink? I love Coca-Cola and Reeses, but if we’re talking real food....TACOS! If you won the lottery what would you do? Would you drop teaching? I ponder this all the time. I would pay off my student loans/debt. Buy a nice house and car. Put money away for my kids to have college funds or a nice start to whatever career they choose. I’d also buy homes for a few others in my family. I’m not sure if I’d continue teaching or not. I would finish the year out for sure and reevaluate at the end of it. You are trapped on a deserted island, but get a box of any size with stuff in it. What would you have in your box? Food, and bug spray. I’m not sure. I really hate the outside so I definitely wouldn’t survive. If you had one wish what would you wish for? That’s always a hard one. I’d wish that my boys would grow up to be happy, kind people.
THANK YOU Ms. Phillips!

Welcome to Stacey! Mr. Ochoa by: Samuel Crisp, freshman This is Jose Ochoa, he is the new Spanish teacher at this school. Since we are all wondering a few things about this new teacher, I decided to do a newsletter article on him. So the last few weeks I have been emailing him and asking him some questions. And the man himself responded, and your long-awaited questions have been answered. Here they are.
Q&A: Q1:How long have you been teaching? A1:This is my 13th year as a certified teacher, but I worked as a substitute and teacher assistant before. So, working in education is about 16 years. Q2:What is your favorite instrument? A2:I used to play the alto saxophone back in high school. Q3:Do you have any pets? A3:I do have a dog. His name is Palomo, he is white with some dark spots and gray eyes. Q4:What is your favorite color? A4:My favorite color is black, but I also like navy blue. Q5:Have you taught any other subject than Spanish? A5:Yes, I taught high school Reading Intervention for 2 years. Q6:Do you have a favorite student? A6:No, all my students are equal to me. Q7:Do you like teaching or is it too stressful? A7:It can be stressful sometimes, but I learned to control stress and I do like my job as a teacher. Q8: Do you like speaking English more than Spanish? A8:I speak more Spanish than English with my family and friends and it is also my first language. Q9:What is your favorite English and Spanish word? A9:I don’t think I have a favorite word in any language. Q10. And lastly, what is your favorite thing about Lackland? A10:Honestly, I like the students, they are very active. Most of them want to learn and be successful at school. I also like the teachers and staff. They made me feel welcome from the first day. I’m happy to be at Lackland.
Thank you Mr. Ochoa for answering the questions for us and welcome to Lackland ISD!
Heroes of Texas Independence: John Henry Moore John Henry Moore from Tennessee was a member of the "Old Three Hundred", Stephen F. Austin's original settlers. His early battles were against marauding Indian tribal groups who attacked Texas settlers.
As the decision for Texas Independence drew near, John Henry Moore was given command at the Battle of Gonzalez, by the Committee of Safety, earning the title of colonel, and was authorized to recruit men who were able to fight. Once the Republic was established, Colonel Moore led volunteers against the Comanche, who continued to attack settlements. After the Battle of Plum Hill, the Indians were defeated and Colonel Moore turned his attention to the Mexican raiding groups in 1842. Later, Colonel Moore joined the Texas Rangers.
Colonel Moore died February 25, 1877 and was buried in La Grange, Texas.

COUNSELORS IN ACTION: Wow! September has come and gone. Mrs. Castillo and Stacey Junior-Senior High School’s Military and Family Life Counselors supported the counseling department by providing guidance lessons on identifying everyday feelings, overwhelming feelings, coping strategies and suicide awareness. September was Suicide Awareness Month and these guidance lessons helped students identify local and national resources available in case they see someone in a mental health crisis. The stressors of the pandemic have increased mental health concerns in children and adolescents; counselors’ lessons helped students identify their own coping strategies to help them manage their feelings in times of distress. To bring about more awareness, counselors during both lunches provided students with suicide awareness pins and stickers.
SENIOR PARENT NIGHT: Senior Parent Night for the Class of 2022 was held on the evening of September 2nd. High School Counselor Genevieve Medellin-Keller provided Parents and Seniors vital information on Senior expectations (GPA, Class Rank, SAT/ACT testing), choosing a college, organization, transcript requests, letters of recommendation, the application process, and financial aid/scholarships. Parents and students were given the opportunity to ask questions. Afterwards, parents were able to take part in the Stacey Jr/Sr High School open house.
Thank you! Stacey Counselors wish to thank our students, parents, and colleagues for their tremendous partnership and support.
