Lackland ISD Superintendent Hosts District’s Townhall Meeting

Dr. Burnie Roper welcomed over 20 parents to the Lackland ISD Auditorium for an opportunity to receive information about the current state of the district and to provide responses to questions and concerns.  He presented the newly, Board of Trustees adopted vision mission, and beliefs all of which were created through intense strategic planning sessions facilitated by Education Service Center Region 13’s Dr. Debbie Brennan.  Dr. Roper also shared with participants an introduction of our Board of Trustees and Superintendent Cabinet-Level administrators.

The district’s enrollment, state and federal funding sources, and accomplishments were shared to provide district demographics and accolades.  Of the accolades mentioned were the continued designation of both the elementary and secondary campuses as recipients of the Purple Star designation by the Texas Education Agency which represents the excellence in programming to meet the diverse needs of military-connected students.  Lackland ISD is also the recent recipient of a $1.25 million grant to be utilized to increase STEM activities at both campuses and a $70,000 Strong Foundations Grant to support academic achievement in math at the elementary campus.

Dr. Roper discussed the district’s Texas Education Agency accountability rating of a “B” and his resolve to support initiatives and programs to achieve higher ratings at each campus and the district overall.  Aside from accountability, he also emphasized the Niche rankings that placed the district, junior high, and high school within the top 10 for schools in the San Antonio Area.

Parents were reminded of numerous ways to get involved including participating on various committees.  Cabinet members supported responses to questions with commitments to improve communications and examine ways to increase student achievement in math, student participation in afterschool activities, student morale through increased athletic offerings, and external activities (such as senior trips, proms, and recognitions), and boosting the overall school spirit.

The invitation is extended to all Lackland ISD parents and community members for the next town hall meeting to be held on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. in the Lackland ISD Auditorium and via Zoom.

The Texas Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Division administers 12 federal child and special nutrition and more than $2.5 billion in federal money annually used to fund the programs for the State of Texas.

These nutrition programs exemplify "eating right" for Texans of every age and background and help them build a bridge to success. Everyone plays a role in teaching children the 3E's of Healthy Living - Education, Exercise and Eating Right.

TDA supports providers of nutrition assistance by helping ensure accountability and the efficient use of taxpayer dollars to nourish Texans in need. By striving to put Texans on the path to wellness through TDA nutrition programs and ensuring those programs operate with efficiency and accuracy, Food and Nutrition works to fulfill its mission — Feeding the Hungry and Promoting Healthy Lifestyles.

Volunteer and Parent Engagement Opportunities

Much of the feedback from our school climate surveys over the past few years have highlighted the need for better communication between the district and our parents.  To meet that need, we are very excited to announce that we have rolled out ParentSquare!

ParentSquare is a communication platform.  Through the platform, you’ll be able to:

*Receive all district, school, and classroom communication via email, text, or app

*View the school and classroom calendar and RSVP for events

*Easily sign up to volunteer and/or bring items

*Securely receive important documents like report cards and other student documents

For the best ParentSquare experience, we recommend that you download and install the app.  The name is ParentSquare, and it can easily be found in your device’s app store.  If you don’t have a device, no need to worry: the platform is capable of both text and email, and you can log on via the web as well.  ParentSquare receives its contact information from the Ascender Parent Portal.  Please take a moment to make sure that you have the latest contact information on file there.

Meet Ms. Valle!

By: Anna Williams, sophomore.

Ms. Liliana Valle is Stacey’s new English teacher.  She teaches English 2, AP English 4, and AP Literature.  Get to know Ms. Valle by reading the Q&A below!

What is one of your favorite things about teaching?

“Teaching English gives students the opportunity to discuss important topics and share their unique voices and opinions. What I enjoy most is when a student who is usually quiet has a breakthrough and begins participating and collaborating in the classroom discussions.”

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

“My mom was an English teacher, and she influenced my love of reading and writing. When I started college, I was not sure what career I wanted to go into. I received praise from my English professor on my writing abilities, so decided to pursue an English degree. I decided to add a teaching certification, and once I began my student teaching, I really enjoyed working with students- so my teacher career kind of just fell into place.”

Where did you graduate college from?

“I graduated from Texas A&M University San Antonio (TAMUSA) with a Bachelor’s degree in English when the school was still relatively new, but it’s grown quite a bit since I’ve left.”

How long have you been teaching English?

“I have been teaching English II for four years now. This is my first year teaching AP Lit and English IV.”

What genre of music do you like to listen to?

“Like most people, it depends on the mood I’m in, but one of my favorite artists is Lana Del Rey.”

If you could choose another career, what would it be?

“If I wasn’t a teacher, I think I would want to become a personal chef.  I really enjoy cooking and experimenting with new recipes.”

If you could choose anywhere in the world to live, where would you choose?

“I would live in Colorado because of the beautiful scenery, the nice weather, and the people. Everyone I met there seemed to be as chill as the weather.”

What are some of your favorite hobbies?

“Some of my favorite hobbies are cooking, gardening, reading, going on hikes, hanging out with my friends and trying new restaurants. More recently it has been sleeping.”

If you had one meal you had to eat for a week, what would it be?

“Once I try something new, I tend to over-do it. I’ve recently discovered a new Vietnamese restaurant and have been craving a noodle dish called Bun Thit Nuong.”

How have you been liking Stacey so far?

“Stacey has been amazing so far.  The students are great, everyone is kind, and always willing to help me out when needed. The biggest adjustment is teaching and prepping for four separate classes, but other than that I’m extremely lucky to be a part of the Stacey family.”

Thank you Ms. Valle!

Meet Coach Flores!

Mike Flores is a coach and counselor here at Stacey, read below to get a sneak peak with more information about Coach Flores. Ninth grader Isabella Garza asked him some questions:

How long have you been at Lackland?

18 years

How has your transition been from elementary to high school?

It has been smooth. It's different but at the same time a lot of my responsibilities are the same as elementary but on a different level.

What do you love most about your job?

The kids and the enjoyment they bring me.

What’s your favorite basketball team?

The Spurs

What brought you to Lackland?

I heard that it was a really good district to work for and decided to see for myself.

What is the difference between elementary and middle school?

Middle school is more mature with topics of conversations, and elementary school is more of a fight for my spot at the lunch table but the staff is great on both sides.

Who’s your favorite player on the spurs?

Manu Ginobili

What made you choose to become a counselor?

I just wanted to work with kids more closely in their daily lives other than academic.

What is your shoe size?

Meet Mrs. Pacheco!

By: Leigha Beatty, 9th grade

Mrs. Reign Pacheco is the Stacey campus secretary and attendance clerk. She is a native San Antonian!

Why did you start working at Lackland ISD?

I started working here at Lackland because I genuinely love working in a school environment (before coming here, I worked at Southwest High School) and I also love the idea of working at a school district dedicated to our military families since I am also from a military family.

Do you like Lackland so far? If so, what do you like about it?

I’ve really enjoyed my time here at Lackland so far. I like that it has a small community feel. Everyone is so kind and willing to help.

Do you like your job? Do you plan on staying at Lackland for a while?

I do enjoy my job and would love to be here as long as I can. I am actually also in real estate. I’m a licensed Realtor and I really do enjoy doing that as well. I love the structure and steadiness of working here at Lackland, so I think as long as I can continue to balance both, I will.

Do you have family here or in the military?

Yes, my husband is in the military and works here at Lackland AFB.

Where did you live before coming to San Antonio?

I was born and raised in San Antonio but in 2012, we were stationed in Pensacola, Fl.  for a bit then in Homestead, Fl. (It’s small town just a few minutes from Miami) for about 4 years.

Do you have kids? Do your kids go to Lackland schools?

I do have kids. I have a son and a daughter but no, they don’t come here. I didn’t want to make them move schools, but I do always tell them how great Lackland is so maybe one day, they’ll decide to join me here!

THANK You, Mrs. Pacheco!

One-Room School Houses in Texas

One-room schools had one purpose and one purpose only. They didn't enjoy the amenities or details of hotels, public buildings, depots or courthouses. In some cases during the winters of the 1930s, each child came to school with a piece of firewood for the stove. There was no such thing as an electric furnace. A cast iron stove came in handy on those cold, northern windy days.

Many schools were dismantled and recycled into barns and outbuildings after the school consolidations of the late 1940s and early 1950s. Only a fraction are still standing today. Some today serve as community buildings or even residences.

Other school buildings are simply collapsing under their own weight or being swallowed by vegetation.

We need to treasure our Texas history and honor our educational foundation.  The gift of education is priceless.

Good Information

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a common condition that makes it hard to work with language. Some experts believe that between 5 and 10 percent of people have it. Others say as many as 17 percent of people show signs of reading challenges.

People don't outgrow dyslexia, but there are teaching approaches and strategies that can help them improve their reading skills and manage dyslexia challenges. People of any age can be tested for dyslexia, although the tests are different for adults than for kids.

Dyslexia is a learning disability associated with reading.  Dyslexic people have trouble reading at a good pace and without mistakes. They may also have a hard time with reading comprehension, spelling, and writing, but these challenges aren’t related to intelligence.

Wear Grey/Silver- Tuesdays

World Dyslexia Awareness Day was Tuesday, October 4th during Dyslexia Awareness Week. Participants wore grey/silver on Tuesday, October 4th, to show their support for Dyslexia students at Lackland ISD and around the World.
