Presidents' Day 2024

Although the holiday is most often called “Presidents’ Day,” the observed federal holiday is officially called “Washington’s Birthday.”

Neither Congress nor the President has ever stipulated that the name of the holiday observed as Washington’s Birthday be changed to Presidents’ Day. Additionally, Congress has never declared a national holiday binding in all states; each state has the freedom to determine its legal holidays. This is why there are some calendar discrepancies when it comes to this holiday’s date.

In a sense, calling the holiday Presidents’ Day helps us reflect on not just the first president but also our nation’s founding, its values, and what Washington calls in his Farewell Address the “beloved Constitution and union, as received from the Founders.” Also, Abraham Lincoln’s birthday is in February (on the 12th), so by calling the holiday ”Presidents’ Day,” we can also include another remarkable president in our celebrations.

Historically, Americans began celebrating George Washington’s Birthday just months after his death, long before Congress declared it a federal holiday. It was not until 1879, under President Rutherford B. Hayes, that Washington’s Birthday became a legal holiday, to be observed on his birthday, February 22.

Today, George Washington’s Birthday is one of only eleven permanent federal holidays established by Congress. One of the great traditions followed for decades has been the reading by a U.S. senator of  George Washington’s Farewell Address in legislative session, which remains an annual event to this day.

Stacey Happenings

District Champs!!!

For the first time since 2015 the Stacey boy’s varsity basketball team is outright district champions! The team finished district play at 13-1 and an overall record of 20-8. There were some close calls, but this team always found a way to win whether it was a coming from behind, hitting shots at the buzzer or getting big defensive stops! The teams first playoff game is next Tuesday February 20, 2024 at Boerne HS. The game is set to start at 6:00.

On Saturday, February 10th, Mrs.Duron’s Family and Community Service class hosted a basketball camp for the third graders.  The varsity boys basketball team helped them with their dribbling, passing, and teamwork skills. This camp was a good opportunity for the team to teach basket ball basics and be a positive role model to the little ones. Following the camp, the campers were invited to attend the basketball game and were able to participate in a halftime shoot around.  It was great to have extra fans in the crowd to cheer on their district champions at their last home game.

HOSA Blood Drive

How does Stacey celebrate Valentine’s Day? If you are part of HOSA-Future Health Professionals, it’s by sponsoring a blood drive on campus!  HOSA students, along with club sponsor Mrs. Domini Joseph, planned, recruited and processed donor volunteers, and  also provided post-donor snacks. Out of 65 volunteers, 57 units of blood were donated. It will be given to the Lackland Blood Donors group to provide life-saving treatments to our military community. Thanks to all blood donor volunteers!

February Students of the Month

Isaiah Frias: “Isaiah is not only an exceptional student but also an individual who demonstrates great empathy towards his peers and the community at large. Throughout his time in my classroom, Isaiah consistently showed a genuine concern for others, always willing to go out of his way to support and assist his classmates. His ability to truly understand and connect with the emotions and experiences of those around him sets Isaiah apart as a remarkable individual. Isaiah is ALWAYS gentle and understanding.”

Evangeline Manning: “Evie is that student who is always doing the right thing, but more importantly, she is her classmates' keeper. She is a nurturer and is always paying attention to those around her. If someone is having a bad day, she is there to lift up their spirits. Everyone likes her because she treats everyone kind. She is a good listener when her peers speak and always displays a genuine concern if anyone gets hurt or having a stressful moment. She has shown this consistent behavior all year and that is why I feel she deserves this recognition.”
