A Proclamation on the Month Of The Military Child, 2022

Each April, the Month of the Military Child provides a chance for us to recognize and thank the children of our service members and veterans.  I have always believed that America has a sacred obligation to prepare our troops when we send them into harm’s way and to support them and their families both while they are deployed and after they return home.  The First Lady and I recognize that it is not only those who wear the uniform that serve our country — it is also their loved ones, and especially their children.  In the timeless words of the poet John Milton, “They also serve who only stand and wait.”

Military-connected children shoulder the burdens of service, facing unique challenges from a young age.  They move frequently with their families — leaving friends, schools, and communities behind.  They say goodbye to deploying family members, not knowing when they will see them again.  Some of these young people endure deployments and separations, spending months or even years away from their beloved parent.  Birthdays, holidays, graduations, and other important milestones are celebrated with just a phone call or virtual hug.  The First Lady and I witnessed these sacrifices firsthand, when our grandchildren experienced their father’s deployment to Iraq.

Even after their parent has left the military, children can continue to face challenges as their parent transitions to civilian life and they may be called on to care for wounds or injuries their parent suffered during their service.  Too many live with the pain and loss of a parent or family member who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

This month — and every month — we share our gratitude for these children.  We recognize the hardships they face and commit to supporting the physical, social, and emotional health and safety of their families.  That is why the White House’s Joining Forces initiative, guided by the First Lady, is focused on supporting the military and veteran families, caregivers, and survivors.

As a symbol of our support and gratitude to our military children, during the Month of the Military Child, the Department of Defense uses the color purple — representing all services in the military community.  I encourage Americans everywhere to find ways to support our military-connected children, including by wearing purple to honor their service.  Let us recommit ourselves to our sacred obligation to provide our military children and their families with the full support of our communities and our Government.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim April 2022 as the Month of the Military Child.  I call upon the people of the United States to honor military children with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of March, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-two, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-sixth.

                                                                                      JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR.

Lackland ISD Extends Application Eligibility for Non-resident Transfers

Each year Lackland ISD accepts a limited number of student transfers.  Transfer acceptance is based on the number of available slots at each grade level and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.  Potential transfer students must meet transfer eligibility criteria to be considered.  Because a Non-resident Transfer is a privilege rather than a right, it is important to stress that transfer students will be subject to the Non-resident Transfer Agreement.

On Tuesday, March 22, 2022, Lackland ISD’s Board of Trustees approved Superintendent Dr. Burnie Roper’s recommendation to extend non-resident transfer exemptions.  Under the newly adopted Board policy, Lackland ISD shall accept a transfer request only for a student who is a military dependent, a child of a District employee, or a child of a civilian employed on Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA).

Parents may apply for a non-resident transfer under one of the following exemptions.

*The parent is serving on active military duty and is assigned to JBSA.

*The parent is retired from active military duty, regardless of when the parent retired or whether the child was enrolled in the District when the parent retired.

*The resident District student becomes a non-resident during the course of a school year, and the parent separates from active military duty in a manner other than retirement.

*The parent is employed by the District or is a civilian employed on JBSA.

All applications will be processed electronically.  All requests will be checked for accuracy.  Any false or missing information may result in your application not being processed and/or denied

Effective Monday, March 28, 2022, Lackland ISD will be accepting non-resident transfer applications online.  To apply for non-resident transfer consideration, please complete the application using this link: https://lacklandtxc.scriborder.com/

Bots in Blue in Action

During March 31- April 2, the Bots in Blue traveled to San Jacinto College in Pasadena, TX for a regional FRC robotics competition.

The team had a qualification record of 8-8 and was selected by the number 4 seed in the tournament for the playoffs.

After winning the quarterfinals with a record of 2-0, the team’s alliance moved on to the semifinals against the number 1 seeded alliance made up of the top team in Texas paired with the 19th team in Texas.

Even though they did not make it to the finals of the event, they qualified for the UIL State Championship to be held in Houston April 6-8, 2022.

In FRC robotics, UIL combines all schools into one category, 1A-6A. Stacey’s team is the only 2A school to qualify for the event. There are only one 3A school and five 4A schools that qualified. The remaining 73 teams are 5A or 6A teams.

The Bots in Blue are ready to go toe-to-toe with some of the biggest schools in Texas!

Go Bots in Blue!

SENIOR Spotlight: Allison Flores

by Mia Flores, sophomore

Allison Flores is one of our Stacey seniors from the class of 2022. I would like to recognize her as one, a sister and two, a role model for me and others. She has accomplished many things while at Stacey

including being in CyberPatriot for 4 years, 3 of which being captain of a team. She has been involved in NHS, S2S and Spanish club (Vice President- President), while also running varsity track and cross country. These accomplishments, along with her writing skills have allowed her to be accepted to UTSA, Texas A&M San Antonio, and The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. She was born in Belleville, Illinois and moved around to places like Nebraska, Mississippi, Florida and finally ended up in Texas her 8th grade year. She spends her time doing things like drawing, gaming and enjoying delicious food. We are going to miss her next year as she goes off to

college and achieves many great things in the future.

Poteet, Texas:  Strawberry Festival

HOW DID THE POTEET STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL BEGIN?

It began in 1948 when the Poteet Rotary Club organized the first event in an effort to provide returning Word War II veterans an incentive to return to the farms. The club's second aim was to improve the pack of berries so buyers would receive a uniform pint, flat, or crate of strawberries.

WHEN WAS THE FIRST FESTIVAL HELD?

It was held the second weekend in April, 1948, in downtown Poteet and was enthusiastically received by the media and south Texas citizens.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE ANNUAL FESTIVAL?

The primary purpose of the festival is to promote Poteet’s premier strawberries, now an endangered crop. Another major purpose is providing scholarships to educate the youth of Poteet with festival proceeds. The festival has also become a major economic generator for south Texas and Atascosa County, pouring an estimated $10-$12 million into the South Texas economy. In addition, the annual berry fest is now a major tourism attraction for the state and the greater southwest United States.

WHO COMES TO THE FESTIVAL?

Everyone. Young families like the fact that children age 12 and under are admitted free of charge. Others recognize that the admission fee is absolutely the best entertainment package in the state.   Discount tickets (sold online) will be $15 for one day and $15 if they purchase two or more tickets. Once inside the festival grounds, individuals may sample all of the free, live entertainment on fourteen stages, including the outdoor concerts and the rodeo performances. Annually people from all over the nation and some foreign countries attending the berry fest.

Fact or Fiction?

Using a pacifier causes speech and language problems

►Unclear

The verdict on this issue may still be out. Prolonged pacifier use has been linked to dental problems and increased ear infections, both of which can have a negative impact on speech and language learning. However, a couple of recent studies examining the speech (pronunciation) of children with prolonged pacifier use found different results. One study found no difference in the speech (pronunciation) of children who used a pacifier for a long period. However, in 2010, another study found increased odds of speech disorders among children who  used a pacifier for 3 or more years or sucked their fingers extensively.

Boys talk later than girls.

►True

It is true that boys produce their first words and sentences later than girls. However, these differences are only in terms of a matter of a few months. There is a normal range within which children acquire certain language milestones. “Girls tend to be on the earlier end, and boys on the later end, of this age range”, according to researchers Seyda Özçalskan and Susan Goldin-Meadow (2010). Therefore, boys are not actually delayed in their language development, just a little behind girls. So if a young boy is really lagging behind in his speech and language development, don’t assume that it’s because he’s a boy and that it’s perfectly normal. He may require some speech and language intervention.

Twins are at greater risk for language delay.

►True

In a review of the research regarding the development of twins, Karen Thorpe summarized the following in her 2006 article:

Twins, particularly male twins, have higher risk of language delay.

Language delay is usually mild, and it seems to reduce by middle childhood.

There is great variation in language scores among twins

Learning two languages at the same time (bilingualism) causes language delays in young children.

►False

Children learning two languages at the same time will go through the same developmental patterns in both of their languages and at roughly the same time as children learning one language. While the vocabulary of each individual language might be smaller when counted separately, the total vocabulary of bilingual children is comparable to monolingual children when both languages are taken into account. Sometimes young children learning two languages mix words or grammar from their two languages, known as “code mixing” or “code switching”. This is very normal and does not indicate that the child is having difficulty with language learning. There may actually be benefits from bilingual language learning, as children who are fluent in two languages have strengths in “metalinguistic skills” (the ability to think about language), as well as in cognitive skills, such as attention.
