Kearney, Mo., November 25, 2024: Kearney School District will be using Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) during snow days this winter due to Missouri Senate Bill 727 (SB727).

Among many other provisions, the SB727 provides additional state revenue for districts with at least 169 instructional days, which must be applied toward staff compensation. Our academic calendar includes 170 student contact days. Using AMI is the most practical way for us to guarantee that we meet SB727 requirements.

AMI Days for Elementary School Students (Grades K-5)

Since KSD doesn’t send home devices for our students in grades K-5, we have prepared materials in advance to send home to elementary school families. This way, teachers and students will be ready in case an AMI day is announced.

Those AMI day materials were handed out to families during the most recent Parent Teacher Conferences; please contact your child’s teacher if you have not received them or need replacements.

If an AMI day occurs, please ensure your child completes the assigned work and returns it the next school day. This work is important as it will count towards attendance for the missed day.

AMI Days for Secondary School Students (Grades 6-12)

Virtual classes will begin at 8 a.m. on AMI days for students at Kearney Middle School, Kearney Junior High and Kearney High School.  All teachers will have two set virtual hours on those days for instruction and to answer questions, using the following schedule.

  • 8 to 9 a.m. – Electives
  • 9 to 10 a.m. – Math & Science
  • 10 to 11 a.m. – English Language Arts & Social Studies
  • 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. – Electives
  • 12 to 1 p.m. – Math & Science
  • 1 to 2 p.m. – English Language Arts & Social Studies

Teachers will also be available to respond to emails during normal contact hours from 7:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. On AMI days, attendance will be determined by the completion of lessons and activities in the following manner:

  • Completion of lessons and activities turned in the next day of attendance.
  • Electronic submission of lessons and activities on the AMI day or the next day of attendance.

Please contact your student’s school or teacher with any questions or concerns that you might have about our AMI plans.

UPDATE

The situation involving the traffic stop on our campus this morning is resolved. Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested the individual on multiple outstanding misdemeanor warrants related to non-violent offenses.

To clarify our earlier message, the individual never tried to gain access to the school. The deputy was alerted about the outstanding warrants after checking the individual’s license plate. The individual pulled into the campus parking lot while being followed by the deputy. Our campus was simply a convenient location for this individual. During his initial conversation with the deputy, the individual claimed to have a student at the school, which he quickly admitted was a lie.

At no time were our students or staff in any danger. Again, we appreciate the sheriff’s office and KSD SRO Adam Kirkland for their diligence.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE

Be advised that Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies detained an individual who had driven onto the Dogwood Elementary campus this morning on Thursday, Sept. 12.

The individual claimed to have a student at the school, which is not the case. At no time did the individual enter the school. The deputies have relocated the individual off of our campus and will be doing the same with the vehicle. An officer with a drug dog has been called to the scene.

We are continuing to monitor the situation and classes are proceeding. We will provide updates as needed. This situation is completely unrelated to the message sent last night about the threat reported to Kearney School District. Our students and staff members were safe during the entire incident.

Our team did an outstanding job of following our safety and security procedures. We are very grateful to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and KSD School Resource Officer Adam Kirkland for their outstanding support. Please email dwoffice@ksdr1.net if you have any questions or concerns.

Bulldogs celebrate the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVIII victory

Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs for their outstanding victory today against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII! Their ongoing success is an inspiration as we do the hard work of helping guide our students to achieve their dreams!

We know that many of you are planning to celebrate this big win by attending the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade on Wednesday, Feb. 14 in downtown Kansas City. With this in mind, we are canceling classes at all of our schools for that day. This cancelation will include Kids Club, Puppy Pound, Forest Friends and Acorn Patch.

This decision to declare a “Red Snow Day” was not easy. Our academic calendar is designed so that every day of school is important. Cancellations are always disruptive for students, families and employees. While we expect that the Chiefs will continue to dominate the NFL, future cancelations for this or similar events will be considered carefully before they are approved. It should not be assumed that these days will automatically be canceled.

This is a great day for Chiefs fans worldwide and our region in particular! Please stay safe as you, your family and your friends celebrate this great achievement. Go Chiefs!
