Innovation grants are given to 14 teachers at seven schools across KSD

Kearney, Mo., April 15, 2025: The rocket of innovation in Kearney School District continues to be fueled by the KSD Education Foundation.

Foundation leaders recently awarded $11,252 in Teacher Innovation Grants (TIG) to 14 certified KSD staff members at seven schools. The grants were revealed during a tour of schools by KSDEF Chair Season Kerns, several foundation volunteers and Superintendent Emily Miller on Friday, April 11.

TIGs provide needed funding for new and innovative ideas for classroom teachers to be implemented in the following academic year. Winners are selected annually in the spring to implement programs in reading, technology, science, fine arts and more, Kerns explained.

2025 KSDEF TIG Recipients (School) – Amount & Project:

The Teacher Innovation Grants program brings these concepts to life in classrooms, benefiting students when alternative funding isn’t available.

“KSD’s teachers are constantly looking to create new and more engaging experiences for our children,” Kerns said. “We’re grateful to our community for supporting this work and excited to see what our TIG recipients achieve!”

This year’s cohort of grant recipients are revealed at ‘Rise & Shine for Kids’ breakfast fundraiser

Kearney, Mo., April 19, 2024: The Kearney School District Education Foundation (KSDEF) is super-charging 21st-century classrooms across our schools with another round of Teacher Innovation Grants (TIG).

KSDEF Chair Season Kerns revealed the 2024 TIG recipients during the organization’s annual “Rise & Shine for Kids” breakfast fundraiser this morning at the Annunciation Community Center in Kearney. The foundation granted $6,365 to nine Kearney School District teachers this year:

  • Sara Kimmel (Kearney Elementary) – iPads for KESTV Broadcasting Club
  • Nanette Stout (Kearney Elementary) – Books on Display and Kids on Point
  • Kassidy Robertson (Kearney High School) – Oven Updates
  • Bradley Miller (Kearney High School) – Equipment to Enhance Science Labs
  • Sydney Johnson (Kearney Elementary) – Authentic Literacy & Cozy Engagement
  • Rebecca Shaheen (Southview Elementary) – Turning Water Into Food
  • Amy Roberts (Dogwood Elementary) – Social Emotional Learning Subscription
  • Andie Moon (Dogwood Elementary) – Dogwood Lego Club
  • Meg Yarkosky (Kearney Middle School) – Making a Splash with Community-Based Instruction

These teachers applied for and were selected by a special committee to receive these grants, which are funded in large part by the money raised at the annual breakfast, according to Ms. Kerns. The awardees were notified at the beginning of April when the “TIG Prize Patrol” surprised them at their school with a big check and balloons.

TIGs provide needed funding for new and innovative ideas for classroom teachers to be implemented in the following academic year. Winners are selected annually in the spring to implement programs in reading, technology, science, fine arts and more, Kerns explained.

“The teachers in the Kearney School District have a lot of great ideas to make learning effective and fun,” she said. “They know what the students in their classroom need and sometimes their ideas simply cannot be implemented through the standard budget the district provides.”

The 2024 “Rise & Shine for Kids” breakfast was emceed by Kearney High School junior Britta Nielson, and senior Kate Martens sang the National Anthem. The event featured a demonstration by KHS science teacher Justin Leon’s robotics team, which has received two special allocation grants from the foundation. The KHS Frequency Choir, led by Dustin McKinney, entertained the attendees with two impressive performances.

Superintendent Emily Miller provided an overview of the district’s major accomplishments this school year, including making progress on the Proposition B zero-tax-rate-increase capital improvement bond projects, safety and security upgrades, and student achievements in the classroom and their extracurricular activities.

“As we look ahead to the future, I am confident that Kearney School District will continue to lead the way in education excellence,” Dr. Miller said. “Together, we will build on our successes, confront challenges with resilience, and remain steadfast in our commitment to serving every student, every day.”

Kearney Chamber of Commerce Executive Director was the event’s keynote speaker. She talked about her experience as a KSD student and why it’s critical for the school district and business community to have a strong relationship.

Team KSD celebrates Teacher and Support Staff of the Year Award winners and 2023 retirees

Kearney School District celebrated the 19 exemplary employees chosen to receive Teacher of the Year and Support Staff of the Year honors during the first-annual Team KSD Awards & Retiree Reception held on Monday, April 17 at Tobacco Barn Farm in Holt.

“The determination to be the best on behalf of our students and community imbues every level of our team: teachers, support staff and administrators,” Superintendent Emily Miller said. “Our culture of excellence serves a crucial educational purpose. Our students may not always be conscious that it exists, but they learn it nevertheless. Excellence becomes part of their DNA. That is why this work is so important and so essential. We are here to celebrate your work.”

A large group of KSD staff visited with the honorees during the after-school event. It culminated with the announcement that Kearney High School social studies teacher Jennifer West was selected to receive the district’s overall 2023 Kearney School District Teacher of the Year Award and Network Administrator Chris Shirk was selected to receive the overall 2023 Kearney School District Support Staff of the Year Award.

Mrs. West is described by school administrators, fellow faculty members and parents/guardians as a dynamic social studies teacher. This year, she implemented a Human Geography that is helping the Kearney Fire and Rescue Protection District (KFRPD) in a Real World Learning project to identify potential sites for a second firehouse. That meant that she had to teach herself how to use specialized mapping software in order to guide her students through the project.

“Her classes are always very engaging and students are actively involved,” Assistant Superintendent for Academic Services Jennifer Kopp said. “She goes over the essential content but always has side stories to make the content relevant and interesting to her students.”

Director of Special Education Heather Guilkey praised Mr. Shirk for his attention to detail and aptitude for seeing all sides of an issue. His customer service skills were particularly vital during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Chris was at the receiving end of many phone calls from parents, guardians, and grandparents trying to get their students online to access instruction,” Dr. Guilkey said. “Chris frequently begins working long before any teaching or office staff arrive, ensuring a consistent user experience by checking to see that all systems are working properly. If they are not, his early arrival usually gives him plenty of time to fix the issue before many have even noticed.”

Each KSD school selected one certified teacher and one support staff member to receive their building’s 2023 awards. The district award recipients were selected from that pool of school-level honorees.

Along with their recognition plaques, West received a $250 cash award and a $750 classroom grant and Shirk received a $250 cash award and a $250 classroom grant from the Kearney School District Education Foundation. They can choose to spend their grants on education-related projects or items of their choice.

The event included recognition for the 14 KSD staff who will be retiring at the end of the current academic year. They each received a special embossed crystal apple. They also were each asked to select a book that the district purchased as a signed gift for their school libraries.

“The people whose names I am about to call represent countless years of dedication and experience,” Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Zach McMains said. “You have each earned this opportunity, and we are all so grateful for your selfless service on behalf of our students, schools and community. We recognize that it is our job to carry on the legacy of excellence that you built in KSD.”

KSD also honored the KFRPD as our 2023 Business of the Year because of its valuable partnership in education on behalf of our students, families and the community as a whole. Kelly Gentry received our 2023 Volunteer of the Year for his selfless service.

All of this year’s honorees will also be recognized at the Northland Regional Chamber of Commerce’s 2023 Excellence in Education Awards Banquet on April 25. West has already been nominated by KSD for the Missouri Regional Teacher of the Year recognition, which will be announced this summer.\

Local business leaders utilize corporate program to boost education

Kearney, Mo., April 21, 2022: Two local insurance agents are stepping up to help ensure a great future for Kearney School District students.

Stella Spiking and Tracy Tucker combined forces to leverage a State Farm Insurance corporate matching grant program that generated a total of $7,000 in donations to benefit Kearney schools. They recently visited the KSD central office to present these donations to KSD Education Foundation Board Chair Julia Kuhn.

“We are so grateful for this generous gift from Stella, Tracy and State Farm,” Ms. Kuhn said. “They took the initiative to find and use this corporate matching grant program. This is a great example of the support we get from our local business community. They are true partners in education!”

Ms. Spiking and Ms. Tucker each have their own insurance agencies in Kearney that represent State Farm. They each made separate individual donations of $250 and $1,500 using a community grant program administered by the insurance provider’s charitable foundation. Their contributions were matched by the foundation, which boosted the donations to $1,000 for the KSDEF and $6,000 for KSD.

State Farm agents Tracy Tucker and Stella Spiking pose at the Kearney School District central office.

“The State Farm Companies Foundation encourages our associates to be good neighbors by giving back to the communities where we live and work as well as supporting the education and training of future generations,” Spiking said. “Tracy and I are both local small business owners who believe in the importance and impact of investing in our community.

The foundation’s mission is to bring together area business and community leaders who value education to guide and direct resources outside the district budget, thereby providing opportunities to enrich the educational experience for KSD students and staff. KSDEF funds are used to foster cutting-edge classroom tools and techniques with Teacher Innovation Grants, provide college scholarships, and fulfill special requests. Cami Aebersold and Doug Sublett selected for district-level honors

Kearney, Mo., April 1, 2022: It’s time for the Bulldog Family to recognize the best of the best.

Dogwood Elementary School Counselor Cami Aebersold has been selected to receive the 2022 Kearney School District Teacher of the Year Award. District Facilities Manager Doug Sublett has been selected to receive the 2022 KSD Support Staff of the Year Award.

Ms. Aebersold and Mr. Sublett were both chosen by a selection committee for this year’s district-level recognitions from a strong field of teachers and support staff who had already been honored at the school and building level. Those school-level award recipients were nominated by co-workers, parents/guardians, students and community members.

“It was tough to make these selections for the district Teacher of the Year and Support Staff of the Year because we had such an outstanding field of nominees across the board,” Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Student Services Jeff Morrison said. “Cami and Doug both stood out this year for their own reasons, and we are very grateful for their service to our students, families, staff and community!”

As district-level honorees, Aebersold and Sublett will receive individual awards and have their names added to the permanent plaque at the KSD central office. The KSD Education Foundation will award each of them $250, plus a $750 grant that Aebersold can use to benefit Dogwood Elementary and a $250 grant that Sublett will apply to the district fund of his choice. They will also each be given $250 from the Kearney Chamber of Commerce in the form of Chamber Bucks.

Aebersold has served as a counselor at Dogwood Elementary for 11 years. Her many responsibilities include visiting classrooms every week to help students develop social-emotional skills, coordinating small groups as part of a mental health grant, assisting parents with a wide variety of issues, and ensuring that each student has their individual social, emotional and academic needs met.

“I was surprised and very honored to learn I was being named the Teacher of the Year for Kearney School District, especially knowing all the quality teachers in the district,” Aebersold said. “And to hear that parents had input, that made it feel even better.”

The best part about being an elementary school counselor is making sure that the students and fellow staff members are supported in a way that boosts teaching and learning, according to Aebersold.

“I just love seeing a kid smile and wanting to be here. As a counselor, that’s the real payoff,” she said. “A big part of my job is being a good listener for my colleagues here at Dogwood and helping to support my staff and work through things so that they can do what they’re supposed to do. I consider it an honor that they trust me enough to have me sit and listen and help them work through whatever they are struggling with.”

Dogwood Elementary Principal Laura Gonzalez praised Aebersold for her commitment to the entire school community.

“Ms. Aebersold is an integral part of our Dogwood Family,” Ms. Gonzalez said. “She is relentless in serving not only families but staff members and the greater community. Ms. Aebersold serves from her heart in which she wraps her arms around all who need her support.”

That was an assessment echoed by Assistant Superintendent for Academic Services Jennifer Kopp.

“Cami just has a heart for our kids and for our staff,” Mrs. Kopp said. “It’s been a tough couple of years for everyone, and she has been a tireless source of support.”

Mr. Sublett has been part of KSD’s facilities and grounds team for 23 years. That was after serving around the world for 17 years with the U.S. Navy, where he specialized in damage control. That job included mastery of fire suppression, welding, plumbing and pipefitting, skills that made him the right choice when the opportunity arose to join KSD.

“Doug Sublett is a perfect example of the selfless professionals who work hard every day and often in tough conditions to ensure that everything runs smoothly in our school system. Snow, ice, rain or shine, we know we can count on him getting the job done and done well,” Interim Superintendent Todd White said. “He is an integral member of my leadership team and we quite simply would not be where we are as a district without his contributions. Doug has our gratitude, respect and admiration.”

Sublett and his 11 highly skilled team members are responsible for ensuring that every KSD building and every inch of the district’s grounds are in top condition so that teaching and learning continue uninterrupted. This requires a dizzying array of tasks, including – but not limited to – HVAC, plumbing, lighting, floor tiles, asbestos abatement, roof and door repairs, installing therapy swings in classrooms, fixing basketball hoops and bleachers, fire suppression systems, fire extinguishers, kitchen hoods and alarm systems.

“There is a wide spectrum of jobs that my guys take on the challenge of doing,” Sublett said. “Anything that gets broken, we fix it.”

The biggest and most rewarding challenge in Sublett’s nearly two decades with KSD has been creating sustainable processes and procedures to anticipate and address needs before they become a major problem. He’s retiring at the end of the 2021-2022 academic year and is confident that the district will be able to continue the work he started. More than anything, Sublett is going to miss the teamwork.

“There is a great family environment in KSD,” he said. “Everybody works well together as a team, and that’s why we’re able to accomplish as much as we do. It’s a privilege to be part of this school system.”

Ms. Aebersold, Mr. Sublett and all of KSD’s school-level Teacher of the Year and Support Staff of the Year award recipients will be honored during the 2022 Northland Regional Chamber of Commerce Banquet on April 26 at the KCI Expo Center.

Kearney, Mo., November 15, 2021: Ply Gem Siding Group recently donated $3,000 to help launch the Kearney School District Education Foundation’s (KSDEF) annual fund drive.

The foundation’s mission is to bring together area business and community leaders who value education to guide and direct resources outside the district budget, thereby providing opportunities to enrich the educational experience for Kearney School District students and staff. KSDEF funds are used to foster cutting-edge classroom tools and techniques with Teacher Innovation Grants, provide college scholarships, and fulfill special requests.
