Kearney, Mo., May 13, 2024: The Kearney High School Bulldogs have clearly caught their wind as they prepare to head to the track and field Sectionals meet this weekend.

The KHS Boys and Girls Track & Field teams both earned championships at the Class 4-District 8 meet on Saturday, May 11 at Liberty High School. The boys earned 10 individual or relay gold medals; the girls garnered five golds on the way to their team trophy.

The Bulldog boys qualified for Sectionals in 17 events and earned 208 points, a performance that Head Coach Scott Crall characterized as “dominant.” He called out Ty Smith’s school record-breaking throw of 17.14 meters in the shot put.

“Our boys right now are strong, healthy, and mentally tough,” Coach Crall said. “We are looking forward to this next step and, whatever happens, I am confident that they will put in the work to give them their best chance to move forward.”

The girls also qualified for Sectionals in 17 events. They stayed focused against tough competition and earned the team title by a half-point. Girls Head Coach Geoff Hutton cited the 3200 meter and 4×400 meter runners for closing the gap.

“The ladies entered the district meet with a new focus and a little bit of an attitude,” Coach Hutton said. “We couldn’t be more proud of these ladies and the determination they put into this meet. All of the ladies were responsible for scoring points for the effort even if they didn’t qualify for next week.”

Bulldog boys earn third place at the state meet

Kearney, Mo., June 2, 2023: It’s time for the Bulldogs to raise another banner.

The Kearney High School Girls Track and Field team garnered gold with 52 points in the Class 4 state championships on May 26-27 in Jefferson City. This is the first time in school history that the girls’ team has won state in that sport.

“I thought this season could have the potential to be something very special for a tough group of girls,” Head Coach Geoff Hutton said. “They remained focused all spring, taking it week by week and meet by meet. This group of athletes had all of their dreams and hard work come to fruition.”

KHS scored individual championship points in the 4×800 Relay (Jadyn Barnes, Jordin Vaughn, Liela Murphy, Caitlyn Wood). Eva Lawless repeated as the champion in the Triple Jump, and Jadyn Barnes once again claimed the gold medal in the 800.

The KHS Boys Track and Field team took third place with 47 points, evidence of their ongoing dominance as a Track and Field powerhouse after last year’s state championship. They were paced by Zach Grace and Luke Noland with 12 points apiece.

“I cannot express how proud I am of these boys and this senior class,” Head Coach Scott Crall said. “I thank them for everything that they have given to this school, community, and program. Not only are they phenomenal talents in track and field, but they are amazing young men that will be positive men in our society. It’s hard to say goodbye to this group, but we have great kids ready to fill the roles for years to come, and I am very excited for the coming years!”

As they arrived back in their hometown, the Bulldogs were escorted by the Kearney Police Department and Kearney Fire and Rescue Protection District to KHS late on Saturday, May 27. Boosters lined the route cheering on the two teams as they drove by in their buses. All of this year’s KHS Track & Field state championship competitors and coaches will be honored during the KSD Board of Education meeting on June 21.

Bulldogs prep for District championships May 14 at home

Kearney, Mo., May 5, 2022: The Kearney High School Bulldogs have proven once again that they know how to outrun, out-jump and out-throw their conference competitors.

The KHS boys and girls both earned varsity track and field team golds at the Suburban Blue Conference Championship on Wednesday, May 4 at Staley High School.

Teamwork, preparation and execution were the keys to the success of the varsity girls, according to Head Coach Geoff Hutton. They had a complete team effort, scoring many points throughout the night to beat runner-up Platte County R-3 by 23 points.

“It was a wet and gloomy evening but that didn’t dampen the fire that had been building for a few weeks in anticipation,” Coach Hutton said. “The ladies went into the meet focused and goal-oriented and came away with the conference championship.”

Ava Lawless set two school records in the long jump and triple jump. Several team members set personal records.

This was the sixth-straight conference track and field championship for the KHS boys. They piled on the points with a string of top-five finishes that simply outpaced their opponents, according to Head Coach Scott Crall.

“The story of the night was our depth!  We had numerous conference champions in individual events, but the depth of our team really showed last night,” Coach Crall said. “The boys put on a dominant performance and defeated the competition by over 50 points. We are very proud of what our track program has accomplished!”

KHS will compete in the MSHSAA Class 4 District Championship Track and Field Meet on Saturday, May 14 at Bulldog Stadium.
