Kearney, Mo., November 5, 2024: Kearney School District is inviting its Bulldog runners to come home for Thanksgiving this year.

The Kearney High School Cross Country program is marking its 50th season this year. Former team members and coaches are being asked to join an anniversary celebration during the 2024 Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 28.

Turkey Trot is run by the Kearney School District Education Foundation and the KHS Cross Country program, with support from a wide range of businesses and organizations. All registration fees help fund teacher innovation grants, special classroom projects and scholarships, and support the Kearney High School Cross Country team.

The KHS Cross Country program started in 1975 with teams for boys and girls. They were coached by Kent Kavanaugh and Bill Tuck. Larry Fields coached the teams from 1978 to 1981. Current Head Coach Jeff Roberts took over the program in 1982. Coach Roberts’ assistants this year are Rachel Heili, Alan King and Justin Leon.

Over the last five decades, the Girls team has won 17 conference championships, 19 district titles and three state titles. The Boys team has won 7 conference championships, 9 district crowns and one state title in 2000.

Cross Country combines four Boys districts and four Girls districts to compete at a super district. The top four teams advance to the state meet. The top 30 in each race earn All-District honors.

The Bulldogs’ Girls and Boys teams both qualified for invitations to the state meet. Cross Country is marking its 50th anniversary this season at KHS. This is the school’s 29th Girls team to run at state and 20th Boys team.

The girls were going for their third straight District title. The girls put six runners in front of Platte County’s third finisher. They won the meet by 14 points, with 39 points for their first five runners. 

All seven Bulldog girls earned All-District honors:

• Heidi Adams 6th in 20:20
• Alex Kinstler 8th in 21:23
• Daisy Burnam 9th in 21:27
• Jordin Vaughn 10th in 21:35
• Liela Murphy 11th in 21:40
• Olivia Brock 12th in 21:46
• Delaney Thurston 22nd in 22:34

The KHS boys also had an outstanding day at the District meet, very nearly qualifying as a team for state. The following Bulldogs earned berths at the State meet:

• Isaac Smith was 13th in 17:16
• ‘Rylee Johnson was 23rd in 17:53
• Bradly Barton was 29th in 18:04
• Carter Smith was 30th in 18:05
• Max Morehouse was 31st in 18:10
• Seth Thomas was 40th in 19:10
• Cameron Daniel was 43rd in 19:36

“It was a great day for Kearney Cross Country,” Head Coach Jeff Roberts said. “I’m so impressed by their growth both individually and a team this season, and I’m excited to see what they accomplish at the state level.”

The Bulldogs will compete at the State Championship on Saturday, Nov. 4 in Columbia.

Kearney, Mo., October 16, 2023: The Kearney High School Bulldogs have once again run their competitors off their feet.

The KHS Girls Cross Country team earned gold and a third straight Conference title on Saturday, Oct. 14 at Jesse James Park in Kearney. Five girls made First-Team All-Conference with their outstanding results:

• Heidi Adams – 2nd
• Daisy Burman – 4th
• Olivia Brock – 5th
• Liela Murphy – 6th
• Alex Kinstler – 7th.

Delaney Thurston was 9th and Jordin Vaughn was 11th. Both runners earned Second-Team All-Conference honors.

The KHS Boys Cross Country team finished second and had seven Second-Team All-Conference runners:

• Rylee Johnson – 8th
• Isaac Smith – 9th
• Bradly Barton – 10th
• Max Morehouse – 11th
• Carter Smith – 12th
• Seth Thomas – 13th
• Alex Gustafson – 14th.

All 14 of the KHS athletes running Varsity made their All-Conference teams.

The Bulldogs earned third place in the 2021 State Championship. They are the only Kansas City area Missouri Class 4 girls team to earn a trophy in both years. They have also claimed conference and district championships for two years in a row.

The KHS Cross Country team is led by Head Coach Jeff Roberts and Assistant Coach Justin Leon.

• Liela Murphy was 26th with a time of 20:01, just missing All-State by one place
• Alex Kinstler was 29th in 20:13.
• Abby Elam was 31st in 20:21

• Olivia Brock in 49th place in 21:00
• Heidi Adams was 58th in 21:11
• Gracie Bomar 87th in 21:46

The KHS Boys Cross Country team finished 16th at the state meet.

• Bradly Barton was 122th in a personal best of 18:35
• Rylee Johnson 140th in 19:10
• Max Morehouse 147th in 19:25
• Cameron Daniel 150th in 19:40
• Jackson Elsea 153rd in 19:51
