Bulldog Singers Succeed at District Auditions

Thirty-two Kearney High School students traveled to Missouri Western State University for the NWMCDA District Choir Auditions on Saturday, Sept. 14. To compete, students need to sing a solo, identify key signatures, and sight sing for an adjudicated score, according to KHS Choir Direct Dustin McKinney. Top scorers are selected for the All-District Choir, which will perform with all of the students from the Northwest region of Missouri on Oct. 26. Juniors and Seniors who make the ensemble also move on to the next round to audition for the All-State Choir. The entire KHS contingent performed well, and 28 Bulldogs received All-District honors!

Bulldogs to Perform with Premier Youth Symphony

Kearney, Mo., May 9, 2024: Kearney School District freshman Jacklyn Kirkland and sophomore Zoe Wells will be performing with the Youth Symphony of Kansas City (YSKC) Philharmonic Orchestra during its 65th anniversary season-finale concerts this Sunday, May 12 at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.

Miss Kirkland and Miss Wells were selected last fall from many applicants to be a part of this amazing program. This is truly a huge honor for them and for our music department. This weekend’s concerts are a culmination of their hard work.

YSKC is the premier youth orchestra program in the region that serves more than 400 musicians in grades 5–12, according to the symphony’s website. It comprises four full orchestras, a chamber music program, introductory and advanced chamber orchestras, elective classes, a summer micro-camp, multiple ancillary programs and a new Educational Residency program led by the Opus 76 Quartet. Every opportunity provides quality music education experiences to young musicians representing 111 schools and 57 communities across Kansas and Missouri.

Bulldogs Hit the High Notes at District Group Contest

Kearney, Mo., March 6, 2024: Kearney High School’s singers harmonized their way to some outstanding results at the recent regional competition.

The KHS Frequency, Chorale, Tenor/Bass, Chamber and Bel Canto ensembles all earned exemplary 1 ratings from every judge during the MSHSAA District 17 Large Group Choir Festival on Monday, March 4, at Liberty High School.

At this contest, ensembles perform two songs for a panel of three judges and then sight-read a piece of music for another judge, according to KHS Choir Director Dustin McKinney.
