Parents/guardians can manage digital activities and access expert advice

Kearney, Mo., November 16, 2023: Kearney School District is introducing two valuable tools designed to enhance online safety for students and provide parents/guardians with helpful insights into their children’s digital activities: the Qustodio Parents App and the KSD Online Safety Hub.

Fostering a secure online environment for our students is a collaborative effort between Kearney School District and parents/guardians. The new app and hub will enhance and strengthen that partnership on behalf of the community’s children.

Ryan Blankenship

KSD IT Director Ryan Blankenship led the effort to make these new digital tools available for the district’s parents/guardians. This launch is progress towards achieving an important step included in Pillar 1: Climate & Culture of KSD’s 2023-2027 Strategic Plan, which calls for the creation of a safe learning environment of respect and belonging fostering a path to success.

“We’re excited to make the Qustodio Parents App and KSD Online Safety Hub available for all of our families,” Mr. Blankenship said. “We want to equip parents and guardians with practical, effective knowledge and tools so that they can keep their children safe and teach them how to be good digital citizens.”

Qustodio, powered by KSD’s content filter partner Linewize, is a powerful app designed to help parents/guardians monitor and manage their children’s digital activities on school devices. With Qustodio, users gain visibility and insights into how their children’s school devices are being used through real-time data on their internet usage. Additionally, Qustodio allows parents/guardians to pause the internet on school devices outside of school hours, ensuring a healthy balance between screen time and other activities.

The KSD Online Safety Hub, also powered by Linewize, is a comprehensive resource that contains expert advice authored by leading safety professionals. This hub covers crucial online safety topics such as online bullying, screen time management, and gaming. It serves as a valuable guide for parents/guardians navigating the challenges of the digital world, offering insights and strategies to promote a safe and positive online environment for students.

We encourage all KSD parents/guardians to explore these tools to better understand how their children are using their digital devices and to equip themselves with the knowledge to support their online safety. Both the Qustodio Parents App and the KSD Online Safety Hub align with KSD’s commitment to providing exemplary educational experiences in a safe and supportive learning environment.

KSD parents/guardians can visit www.ksdr1.net/qustodio for easy instructions to get started with the Qustodio Parents App and to find a link to the KSD Online Safety Hub.

Team to gather items for the KMO Canteen in exchange for lessons

Kearney, Mo., September 16, 2022: The Kearney High School Girls Tennis squad is serving up lessons as part of their community service.

The KHS team is hosting a youth tennis clinic for students in grades 4-8 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22 at the Kearney Tennis Courts. There is no charge for these lessons. Instead, participants are asked to bring a snack or other item of food to be donated to the KMO Canteen, Kearney School District’s food pantry for students in need that is located at the high school.

The clinic will be led by the squad’s student-athletes. This will be an opportunity for interested youth to learn the fundamentals of tennis, basic swings, and new drills to take home for further practice and improvement.

“Our girls are excited to do this and have really stepped up to make this event happen,” Head Coach Kaitlyn LaFrenz said. “They wanted to share their skills with younger kids and do something positive for the community. Come out and enjoy the fall weather, play on our beautiful tennis courts and learn from our KHS athletes!”

Tennis balls will be provided at the camp, but participants are asked to bring their own water bottles, rackets (if available) and tennis shoes. Extra tennis rackets will be available if needed.

Those interested in participating in this tennis clinic are asked to complete a Google Form prior to the event. An event flyer with a list of food items suitable for donation to the pantry is available on the KSD website.

KHS football skipper named Coach of the Week

Kearney, MO, September 7, 2022: The Kansas City Chiefs have named Kearney High School Football Head Coach Logan Minnick as their Coach of the Week.

Chiefs Director of Special Events Gary Spani visited the Bulldogs’ practice field for a short ceremony with the team and Coach Minnick on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 7. Spani – a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and Chiefs Hall of Fame – presented Minnick with a special plaque and football signed by Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid.

“I’m here to recognize the outstanding work that Coach Minnick has already accomplished since taking over the Kearney High School football program,” Spani said. “Like all great coaches, he’s teaching these student-athletes how to be outstanding in every area of their lives.”

The Bulldogs have earned two impressive, on-the-road victories to start their season. They beat Platte County 21-14 on Aug. 26, followed by a 39-17 win over Fort Osage a week later.

Coach Minnick came to Kearney after five years as head coach of the Raytown High School football team. At RHS, he took over a program that hadn’t seen a winning season in 28 years. Since then, Minnick has accumulated a record of 36-18, four consecutive winning seasons, two conference championships, three district championship appearances, and advanced the Bluejays to the state quarterfinals.

Coach Minnick will be back in familiar territory when he joins the KHS team. He was a member of then-Head Coach Greg Jones’ staff when the Bulldogs earned the state football championship in 2015 and then returned as a state finalist a year later. Prior to that, Coach Minnick had stops as an assistant coach at North Kansas City High School and Staley High School, and one year in his hometown at Richmond High School.

In addition to his head coaching responsibilities for football, Minnick also serves as a PE/weights teacher, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach, Head Summer Strength & Conditioning Coach, and Spring Activities Supervisor at KHS.

Kearney, Mo., August 17, 2022: Missouri’s Sports Hall of Fame will honor Kearney High School graduate Brock Christopher as a member of the “Elite 11” during the 2022 Football Luncheon on Oct. 19 in Springfield.

The Elite 11 Awards honor former high school, college and professional standouts who made positive impacts on the game, according to the Sports Hall of Fame. The luncheon is also an annual opportunity to induct new members into the Sports Hall of Fame and give out the annual President’s Award.

“Everybody in Missouri is excited about the football season, and we’re honored to be recognizing very deserving folks who have made it special in the state,” Missouri Sports Hall of Fame CEO & Executive Director Byron Shive said. “The Elite 11 Awards feature some pretty neat storylines.”

Mr. Christopher was an accomplished three-sport star at Kearney High School, where he graduated in 2005 before attending the University of Missouri. He was a standout linebacker and tailback. He rated as the No. 31 inside linebacker prospect in the nation according to Rivals.com, and the same group ranked him as the No. 7 overall prospect in the state of Missouri. SuperPrep had him as the No. 55 prospect at any position in the Midlands region.

Christopher led Kearney in tackles all four years, as he registered career totals of 467 tackles, 51 tackles for loss and three interceptions. Along the way, Kearney won back-to-back Class 4 state football titles (2002 and 2003). He was a three-time First Team All-State selection at linebacker (2002-2004). As a junior, he ran three times for 50 yards in the 2003 title game, and added a game-high 10 tackles (including one for loss), as Kearney completed a 13-0 season. He had 84 tackles as a senior, including 11 tackles for loss and three interceptions.

At Mizzou, Christopher played in 52 games over four seasons, and was a three-year starter who had 307 tackles, including 20 tackles for loss. He is now national sales manager for MAG Trucks in Columbia.

Christopher was among the first group of honorees to be inducted into the Kearney Athletics Hall of Fame during its debut banquet in 2017.
