Relationships are paramount in every school. At the new JHS/FTC, teachers and counselors will work together to effectively implement a progressive approach to meet the academic, social/emotional, and post-secondary preparation needs of all the students.
Transitions Course - mentoring students for success
A new course called Transitions will be designed to address the needs of students and provide guidance for success each year during high school and beyond. Students will be assigned to a teacher/advisor for all four years. The students will meet with their teacher/advisor several times every week and positive and supportive relationships will be developed. The students will have a prescribed set of activities they will be responsible for in each class to help them prepare for each transition in high school – and after school. Activities such as resume writing, career interest inventories, college applications, job shadowing, goal setting, and applying for jobs are just a few of the activities that will be immersed into the curriculum.
Systems of support will also be an integral part of the Transitions course. Students will have opportunities to access additional assistance for current courses or work ahead on college entrance exam preparation, etc. Study skills will be an important portion of the course’s curriculum.
