Math

Welcome to Common Core Math

Huntington Beach City School District adopted the Common Core math series this year from McGraw Hill called My Math! Students will be asked to "go deeper" in their understanding of math concepts. Common Core expects students to fully understand their thinking process and to be able to write about the steps they use to solve math problems.

In class we will be using math journals, white boards, videos, smart board lessons and their own text books (which they can write in) to help solve and explain their work.

Each student has a standards practice book which will be used daily and for homework.  See the link below to access the textbook online.  Remember that the username is lunch#@hbcsd.us and the password is 4newmath.

Third Grade Standards

All standards in third grade fall under these categories:

1.  Place Value and Rounding

2.  Addition and Subtraction Review

3.  Multiplication and Division (mastery level)

4.  Time and Money

5.  Fractions

6.  Geometry

7.  Measurement

8.  Data and Graphing

Multiplication and Division Quizzes

Each week, students will do ST Math Fluency, play multiplication and division games, find patterns in multiplication, and complete math fact homework pages.  It is required that all third graders have their multiplication facts memorized by the end of the year.

ST Math

Students are expected to complete 33% of ST Math each trimester.  There will be time allowed at school to achieve this if students use their time well.  If not, students will need to work on ST Math at home as well.

If students are on schedule for meeting the ST Math goal, I do allow them to also use the Prodigy program during class time as an additional math resource.

ALEKS and Freckle

Students will also self pace their way to math mastery using these programs.  Each require an inventory quiz that will need to be completed before using the programs.
