The College Board – www.collegeboard.org  PSAT, SAT, SAT Subject Tests, and AP exams

PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test- We offer sophomores and juniors the opportunity to take the PSAT in October. The PSAT is divided into two main sections: evidence-based reading and writing, and mathematics. Scores from the PSAT are never sent to colleges, but the results are used as the qualifying measure for National Merit Scholarships.

SAT- The SAT test includes two required sections: Evidence-based reading and writing, and math.  There is an optional essay section.  Registration for the SAT is online at the website listed above.

AP- Advanced Placement exams are subject-specific tests given each May at the end of college-level courses taught in high school. A student who does well on the tests may receive college credit or advanced placement in college. For more information about the AP Exams or programs talk to your AP teacher or visit the College Board website.

    ACT – www.act.org

ACT- The ACT has four parts: English, Reading, Math, and Science, as well as an optional writing section. Like the SAT, the essay is a requirement for some colleges. Some students may choose to take the ACT in lieu of or in addition to the SAT.  Registration for the ACT is online at the website listed above.

    Fee Waivers
Students with economic hardship, most often demonstrated by participating in the free/reduced school lunch program, may be eligible for a fee waiver for the different standardized college entrance exams.  Students who believe they are eligible for a fee waiver should see their counselor.

    Testing Accommodations
Students with a documented disability (IEP or 504 accommodation plan) may be eligible for testing accommodations. There is a separate application process for testing accommodations for college entrance exams.  There is a separate process to apply for accommodations through ACT or through the College Board (SAT/PSAT/AP exams).  Testing accommodations are not guaranteed but are reviewed individually by these organizations.  Homer High School submits these applications on a student's behalf, and the requests usually take about 6-8 weeks to process.
