Superintent’s Notice on Facilities at MIT Campus 12/2/2021
Greetings MIT Middle and High School Families

The safety, security, and health of our students,
staff and community are our top priorities.

December 2, 2021

Dear Parents/Guardians and Community,

I understand how difficult and frustrating it must have been to be told that your children could not attend school at the MIT campuses. As the Superintendent/Chief Executive Officer, our students, employees, and community members continue to be my highest priority. Our decisions are being made with everyone’s safety and health in mind.

We are continuing the negotiation process between Mare Island Technology Academy Schools and the Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) regarding a lease for the property located at 425 Corcoran Ave. We currently do not have the authority to access the site for the purpose of educating MIT students on that campus. The GTA Board of Directors was provided a further update this afternoon in the Closed Session meeting of the Board.

We are moving forward with mold remediation of the classrooms located in the “EV” wing of the school campuses at 1 Positive Place. The mold remediation includes the removal of any mold, decontamination of the rooms, and follow-up testing to indicate that mold has been cleared as a concern. We will be making the mold reports available on our website for public review.

We must then reconstruct the buildings to ensure they are safe and ready to have students and staff return following the mold remediation. Our goal is to have access to 425 Corcoran Avenue and eight cleared and repaired classrooms located at the “EV” area to bring our MIT Middle School students back to campus. Unfortunately, the timeline for this to occur has been extended to January 3, 2022.

Bringing back our MIT High School students to on-site instruction is proving a bit more challenging. We are investigating being able to remediate or potentially demolish classrooms on the northside of 2 Positive Place. The classrooms we can remediate will undergo mold remediation and be reconstructed to ensure their readiness for students and staff. Our next steps are to continue our work with our construction management company and bring the best possible solution to the GTA Board for review and approval.

Depending on the timelines for the work on the campus we are considering a plan to have students return to campus on a rotating basis, however, depending on the number of available classrooms this idea has yet to be fully built out.

In summary, given the significant issues that were found and identified in the current portables:

  • We currently anticipate our MIT Middle School students returning to on-site instruction on January 3, 2022.
  • We currently anticipate our MIT High School students returning to on-site instruction in February 2022.
  • As we progress to the return to on-site instruction, we will continue to be in distance learning.
  • We will be investigating an option to have students return to campus in a rotating process depending on the number of available classrooms we can confirm.

I understand that this may be very frustrating news, yet we believe that it is important for you to be aware of the realities we are facing. We hope to resolve the lease issue with VCUSD soon and will continue to work collaboratively on behalf of our students, families, and employees.

We will continue to provide additional information as it is available.

Sincerely,

Dr. Robert A. Martinez,
Superintendent/CEO, Griffin Technology Academies

Estimados padres / tutores y comunidad,

Atentamente,

Dr. Robert A. Martinez,
Superintendente / CEO, Griffin Technology Academies

Please read the following message from the Superintendent:

November 12, 2021

Greetings MIT Families,

I hope you had a wonderful Veterans Day.

Next week, November 15th-19th, all of our MIT students will engage in distance learning as a means to continue their education. AsI have previously stated, “The health and safety of students, staff and the community are our highest priority.” Earlier this week, the GTA Board of Directors and I made the decision to close the campus on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, based on the new findings during our campus remediation and repair activities.

Dr. Moss, Director of Learning, and Monica Guzman, MIT Academy Director, consulted and arrived at the following information to support distance learning for students this next week, Nov 15-19.

Your student’s teachers will provide the links to join classes directly to your students’ accounts. Students will work according to their regular daily schedules with the following adjustments:

Synchronous Instruction: The first 30 minutes of class.

Asynchronous Instruction: The following 60 minutes of class, in which students will dedicate time to work on provided assignments.

Please note, the times may be adjusted at the classroom teacher’s discretion. It is essential that each student arrives at their classes on time, participates in their classes, and stays caught up with their daily assignments.

Thank you for your commitment and flexibility as we more fully work to address the concerns that have become apparent at the MIT campus.

Please let Director Guzman know as soon as possible if you have specific questions or concerns about this week’s distance learning, or if your student is having any problems with accessing their classes or connecting with their teachers. She will be available to support and assist you.

Please remember, all students should use their Chromebooks when joining classes. The expectation is that students attend online classes, as attendance will be taken and reported in our Aeries system.

Thank you,

Dr. Robert A. Martinez, Superintendent, Griffin Technology Academies

Gracias,

Dr. Robert A. Martinez, Superintendente, Academias de Tecnología Griffin

The safety and security of our students, employees, and community is our highest priority. Thus, the decision to close campus on November 10, 2021, was made with this priority in mind.
As mentioned in communication to everyone on November 9, 2021, we had initiated significant and needed repairs to the MIT campus via Blackwell Construction. We also took steps to investigate reports of potential mold in several of our buildings. We pursued these concerns, and a mold remediation company, Indoor Restore, identified some organic matter (generally considered mold) that was recently determined to require remediation.

The GTA Board of Directors publicly reviewed the initial findings of air samplings and other assessments on October 28, then approved a further contract for mold remediation with Indoor Restore. The mold remediation company began their in-depth on-site analysis, which included a deep-level look beyond what is normally visible on Tuesday, November 9. This in-depth investigation brought additional concerns to the Charter Management Organization, which were subsequently shared with the GTA Board on Tuesday evening.   Out of an abundance of caution, this led to our decision to close the campus on November 10, 2021.

We thank you for your understanding and flexibility as we further assess the potential safety and health concerns for all involved. Again, our team is working to take action based on the best information we have available.

All students will be away from both the MIT Academy Middle and High Schools and Griffin Academy Middle and High Schools on Thursday and Friday of this week. Should students require any assistance with their current Chromebook to support their learning at home, our Technology Team will be available on Friday, November 12, from 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM. Please come to the Main Office (H ½) at MIT for any needed assistance.

We will provide detailed information this Friday afternoon via ParentSquare regarding the resumption of on-site education for our MIT students. However, please be prepared to have your child start remote learning Monday, November 15 through Friday, November 19. Currently enrolled MIT Independent Study students should continue per their current program.
Griffin Academy students are expected to return to campus on Monday, November 15, 2021, for on-site learning unless they are part of the Independent Study programs.
Sincerely,

Dr. Robert A. Martinez, Superintendent, Griffin Technology Academy

M. A 10:00 a.

Atentamente,

Dr. Robert A. Martinez, Superintendente, Griffin Technology Academies

The following information was announced after the Closed Session of the Griffin Technology Academy Board of Directors Meeting held on Tuesday, November 10, 2021:

“In a roll call vote, the board unanimously approved the closure of the MIT campus for tomorrow at a minimum, out of an abundance of caution due to new information received today regarding the safety of some of the facilities. The Board directed Dr. Martinez to notify our students, families and staff with more information tonight.”

This notice is being provided to inform all MIT families that the Board of Directors directed Dr. Martinez to close both Mare Island Technology Academy Middle and High Schools located at 2 Positive Place, Vallejo, on November 10, 2021.

We have initiated the repairs to the MIT campus, and have also begun to dive deeper into the identified black organic matter that was recently identified to be in need of remediation. Given the initial findings of this deeper analysis new information was shared with the Board of Directors at the meeting tonight, which has led to this decision. Students were already not expected to be on campus on Thursday and Friday of this week.

We will be providing additional information on Wednesday afternoon regarding next steps for students to receive instruction next week.
