The First Week of School: As the first week of school comes to an end, I want to express my gratitude to each member of the Griffin Technology Academies (GTA) family. Through the collective efforts of our classified staff, certificated staff, administrators, support staff, parents, volunteers, students, and the entire school community, we have successfully facilitated the return of many of our Vallejo children to Mare Island Technology (MIT) Academy Middle and High School, and Griffin Academy (GA) Middle and High Schools.

Having visited our schools throughout the first week of school, I can truthfully say that my heart is full. There is no greater feeling than seeing our students back on school grounds, engaging with their peers, receiving the love and support of their teachers, and focusing on their futures. I saw many smiles in the eyes of our students who were proudly wearing their uniforms and protecting themselves with appropriate mask-wearing. Spirits are up and the students are thrilled to be back in a somewhat normal learning environment.

We additionally have had students joining us through our Independent Study Programs. We have both short and long-term programs that are designed to meet our students’ academic needs while their families mitigate impacts and concerns related to Covid-19. Our intent is to ensure that our students in these programs are receiving support and are connected to our school environments for as long as they require these programs. At the present time, we are aligning our programs to meet the California Department of Education parameters and rules for extended Independent Study programs through the 2021-2022 school year. We are hopeful that as the year progresses, and more people are vaccinated, more students will return to in-person instruction.

Griffin Academy School Opening: Some things go as planned, some things don’t, and sometimes you realize that a better plan was needed. We received the keys to the new Griffin Academy Middle and High School, located at 233 Hobbs Ave. just a few, short weeks ago. Hardly anyone had been to the old Griffin Academy location for quite some time due to distance learning, and upon touring the facility recently we recognized that the site had fallen into even more disarray.

Our team concluded that the best decision for in-person learning would be to move everything that was useful to the new location and start school there. While there were plans to ensure enough space for students and staff, and the facility presented as a much nicer environment than the previous location, we discovered that the process of setting up phone lines as well as activating internet service had not happened.  Hence, it has been a couple of rough days without these essentials. In addition, the portables we were expecting to have for the start of the school year were delayed in their arrival. The staff and students have been very understanding and accommodating over the first couple of days, and we have remedies on the way.

Today, August 18, we expect to have activated phone lines on campus, internet available for office staff and are awaiting the full activation of our services to occur throughout the campus within the next month. We have two portables coming from Calistoga that will be functional in a few weeks. We have plans to purchase additional portables from VCUSD and are awaiting their final approval to sell them to us. As soon as this is accomplished we will have them on-site, and ready for students.

Aeries Transition: The entire organization has moved from Powerschool to Aeries for our Student Information System. This type of transition often comes with some glitches and we have been working through this as well. Our school directors and their teams created master plans to ensure that our students and educators were focusing on social and emotional awareness and wellness in order to be able to get back to a full academic load, which is coming next week. The Directors and Assistant Directors have been working around the clock with specialists from Aeries to ensure that student data and schedules are in the system appropriately. We are hopeful that all students’ schedules will be available for them and their parents soon.

Covid-19, SafetyAs we continue to build on the momentum of returning to school, it is important to highlight the key information and resources guiding our progress to ensure our entire community is on the same page with how our schools are operating this year.

When there is a positive COVID-19 case in a classroom at a school site, will parents be notified? Yes. Parents of the students in the classroom will receive an exposure notification, and parents of students who are identified as close contact will be contacted directly. Please review the Griffin Technology Academies Covid-19 Safety Plan COVID SAFETY PLAN for more information on contact tracing.

Is there an official definition for “close contact?” Yes. Someone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period starting from 2 days before illness onset (or, for asymptomatic patients, 2 days prior to testing specimen collection) until the time the patient is isolated.

Should parents’ home screen students daily before sending their children to school? Yes. If your child has a fever or is showing COVID-19 like symptoms, students should not come to school, and parents are encouraged to contact their healthcare provider and contact your school.

Are MIT and GA offering COVID-19 testing? Yes. If a student or staff member is on campus, a nasal-based self-administered “BD Veritor Plus” test is available to students and staff as of August 16. All information regarding testing is available in the GTA Covid-19 Safety Plan.

Is GTA offering COVID-19 vaccines? GTA is working to partner with the Solano County Public Health Department to schedule FREE on-campus COVID-19 vaccine clinics. We hope to open these clinics to all GTA staff, families, students age 12+, and the Vallejo Community. We will share more information as it becomes available via Parent Square and our websites.

Will there be an update on health and safety recommendations for extended day activities? At this time, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has not released updated guidance. Therefore, GTA is currently using the health and safety guidance from Spring 2021 as we await updated guidance.

Are school buildings, classrooms, and offices cleaned and disinfected with COVID-19 protocols? Yes. Daily cleaning and disinfecting COVID-19 protocols are followed.

Do schools reference any type of decision tree to guide COVID-19 response on a school campus? Yes. All GTA schools reference the COVID-19 Positive Case in K-12 Setting Decision Tree designed by the Solano County Health Department. The decision tree is available for review on the county website.

Where can someone find more information about GTA COVID-19 protocols? All information regarding COVID-19 protocols and helpful resources is posted online on the GTA Covid-19 Resource page.

If my child tests positive for Covid-19 can they participate in Independent Study? The health and safety of your child is the primary concern. If they contract Covid-19, are symptomatic, and do not feel well, they should first receive treatment and care for their illness. If your child is asymptomatic, yet needs to stay at home, they may participate in the short-term Independent Study to sustain their classes. If they need, long-term Independent Study a formal registration into the Independent Study will need to occur. New registration for Independent Study programs is best handled by contacting your specific school office.

We hope you find this information helpful, and we ask each of you to please continue to take all appropriate safety precautions for the safety of yourselves, your loved ones, and the rest of our community. We will continue to provide updates and information as it pertains to our ability to keep in-person instruction going.

Sincerely,

Robert A. Martinez, Ed.D.

Griffin Technology Academies

Atentamente,

Robert A. Martinez, Ed.D.
