EAGLE NATION ATHLETICS
Covid 19 Update
July 24, 2020
Dear Galway CSD Parents and Guardians,
There have recently been many updates from the Governor, New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA), The Department of Health (DOH), and New York State Education Department (NYSED) in guidelines, mandates, and best practices for youth sports, club sports, and interscholastic athletics. I wanted to give you an update on available information as of today, for Interscholastic Athletics. Please be aware that this information and guidance is subject to change rapidly and repeatedly. For the most up to date information, please review the Eagle Nation Athletics Website or the Galway Athletics Twitter page.
Galway Central School District has put together a COVID 19 Guiding Committee with an Athletics - Return to Play subcommittee, consisting of 4 coaches, 5 parents, 3 athletes, and myself. The committee has met virtually several times already and will continue to meet throughout the coming months to provide an exchange of new information, regulations, and feedback from the respective stakeholders.
Currently, according to the NYSED reopening guidelines, “Per the NYDOH guidance, interscholastic sports are not permitted at the time of publication of this guidance, and additional information on athletic activities is forthcoming.” NYSPHSAA guidance has reported that with permission to compete, the Fall sports start date has been moved to September 21, 2020. Other options have been presented by NYSPHSAA and Section 2 Athletics in an effort to create more and safer athletic opportunities. More specific information can be found Here or on the NYSPHSAA COVID - 19 Page. The athletics community is hoping for more concrete information to be released during early to mid August.
The pre-participation physical examination required annually for all student-athletes has been waived for the fall season, provided that the student-athletes have received a physical examination in the 2018-2019 or 2019-2020 school year. Athletes that still need to schedule a physical and cannot get into their primary care physician can schedule an examination at the Galway Jr/Sr High School on August 20, by contacting our school nurse Sue Horne at [email protected].
Student-athletes interested in registering for fall sports must register on FamilyID through the Eagle Nation Athletics website by September 6, 2020. If you experience any issues while registering, please contact the FamilyID helpdesk at 1-781-205-2800 EXT 1. If you have questions or concerns about athletics at Galway Central School District, please contact Athletic Director, Elise Britt at [email protected].
Thank you,
Elise Britt
