Celebrating Books with a Play on Words
Posted on 02/04/2014

The Bayview Avenue School Family Book Club program brought together students and their families for a night that celebrated the wonders of literature and emphasized the importance of reading. The program began with staff members starring in a light-hearted rendition of Jackie Mims Hopkins' book "Goldie Socks and the Three Libearians." Teachers Yvette Ramos-Goldstein and Geraldine LaPenne narrated the play in both English and Spanish. Students enjoyed seeing their favorite teachers dressed as storybook characters as they delivered a message that encouraged reading.

The large turnout was due in part to the efforts of third-grade student Tristan Meli, the designated morning and afternoon announcer, who reminded the entire school to attend the evening program for a few weeks prior to the event.

After the show, students were given literacy-themed bookmarks and activity sheets to take home. Everyone was welcome to browse the vast selection of grade-appropriate books at the school's book fair in the gym.
