2014 St Jude Math-a-Thon

St. Jude Math-A-Thon
Mrs. Spinks, a 6th grade teacher at Fairfield Middle, held an assembly at the beginning of April to introduce to our 5th and 6th grade students the St. Jude Math - A - Thon.  Mrs. Spinks' assembly explained to students the need for raising money to help the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital;  the only National Cancer Institute designated hospital devoted solely to children.  She incorporated math into her presentation to show the students how much money is needed for the hospital to operate and to continue with their research on a daily basis with no cost to the families of patients who are admitted to the hospital.  By the end of the assembly, the students were very enthusiastic and ready to get started raising money for such a worthy cause.

In just two weeks, the students surpassed Mrs. Spinks $4,000 challenge by raising over $6,600.   Sixth grade student, McKenna Kulkusky, raised the most amount for the cause with $1,200.  Sixth grader, Kyrsten Kidd and 5th grader, FaithLynn Moore, each raised $700.  As an incentive to meet the challenge, the top three students who raised the most money would have a chance to throw a pie in the face of Mrs. Spinks.

On Thursday afternoon, in front of their 6th grade classmates, teachers, and the middle school principal;  McKenna, Kyrsten and FaithLynn enjoyed their moment of throwing a whipped cream pie in the face of their teacher.  Mrs. Spinks enjoyed it as much as her students and she is hoping that the St. Jude Math-A-Thon will become an annual fund raiser at the middle school.

Mrs. Spinks would like to thank all of the 5th and 6th grade students who participated in the Math-a-Thon and to thank the parents and teachers who helped support a student with their donation.
