CHS seniors Natibida Rubalcava-Carreno, Alexia Clover, Christianne Corzine, Paulina Lopez-Barajas, Julissa Arroyo, Jaylene Ortiz and Haley Fowler on the first day of student teaching

September 13, 2023 – Collinsville High School seniors enrolled in the Collinsville Area Vocational Center education practicum class began their first week of student teaching on September 11 at Collinsville Community Unit School District #10’s John A. Renfro Elementary and Kreitner Elementary schools.

CHS Seniors Julissa Arroyo, Alexia Clover, Christianne Corzine, Haley Fowler, Paulina Lopez-Barajas, Jaylene Ortiz and Natibida Rubalcava-Carreno have the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom and observe firsthand what it’s like to be a professional educator.

“These seniors will be spending approximately six hours weekly with teachers gracious enough to open up their classrooms for the experience,” said Shawn Geppert, the CAVC/CHS teacher responsible for the education program, “They will stay in those elementary classrooms through the end of October when they will switch to the preschool level, including placements at Webster Elementary until December. Second semester will be split between Dorris Intermediate School & Collinsville Middle School to have a wide range of experiences to incorporate into making the decision of what level they’d like to pursue in college.”

Participants perform tasks like creating bulletin boards, grading papers, working one-on-one with students who may be struggling with particular concepts, making copies, creating projects, and teaching/facilitating small group activities. At the completion of the course, they will have collected a portfolio of artifacts including behavior management ideas, lesson plans, reference letters and concepts to build their teaching philosophies.

The education practicum course is the capstone of specialized CAVC courses that introduce future teachers to the profession through classwork and student teaching opportunities. Through Early Childhood, Teaching as a Profession and Teaching Practicum classes, high school students can earn dual credit through Southwestern Illinois College and gain experience in lesson planning, teaching strategies and classroom management.

Because of their successful completion of the first year course, either Early Childhood Education or Teaching as a Profession, the practicum students have base knowledge of the education field and truly participate in an entry level student teaching experience.

“What makes this such a great opportunity for these seniors is not only learning to see things from a teacher’s perspective, but also experiencing various grade levels to help guide their career focus. Time in classrooms with children Pre-K to 8th grade, along with observations done in their high school classrooms, helps narrow what certification they want to pursue when enrolling in post secondary coursework,” said Geppert.

The proposal to expand CAVC education curriculum beyond early childhood and the in-house preschool they have operated for many years was approved by the Collinsville CUSD 10 board of education in 2021, and implemented in 2022-23 as part of the district’s Kahoks Teaching Kahok initiative.

Kahoks Teaching Kahoks is designed to grow a future teacher workforce. The program encourages current high school students to become educators by exposing them to career pathways in education and providing scholarship opportunities for those interested in returning to the Collinsville school district to teach.

“Although we recently expanded this opportunity, we have been placing students in various elementary schools across the district for the last 25 years,” added Geppert, “Administration and teachers across the district have been supportive and excited to open their classrooms for this learning experience. Our course content alone couldn’t possibly cover the variety they are gaining from the teaching practicum. The support of the district staff is key in the success of bringing these students back to our community to teach future Kahoks!”

When weather conditions make travel hazardous, CUSD 10 will declare an E-Learning Day, meaning students will learn remotely from home based on expectations determined by their schools/teachers.

PLEASE NOTE: A complete school closure could still be issued if power outages or other circumstances make remote learning difficult or impossible.

E-Learning Days are important because students do not lose instruction due to inclement weather, so learning continues and there are no missed days to make-up at the end of the school year. If school is “Closed” – those emergency days are added to the school calendar. If no emergency days are used, the school year ends on the designated day.

The Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 Board of Education approved a plan to allow Snow/Emergency Weather Days to become E-Learning Days beginning in winter 2020-21. The change was approved on December 21, 2020. Since that time, CUSD 10 has had the option to designate an E-Learning Day when weather forecasts or events deem road conditions too dangerous for students to travel to and from school.

The 2023-24 E-Learning Plan was approved by the Board of Education on July 17, 2023

2023-24 E-Learning Plan

Click HERE to read the E-Learning plan in Spanish

What is an E-Learning Day?

E-Learning Days are designed to serve as official attendance days of school when the students and teachers stay at home due to emergency situations, yet learning continues as students remotely leverage digital tools and engage in teacher-prepared lessons. The Collinsville School District E-Learning Plan also includes teachers available remotely to assist students by email with their assignments during the hours of the E-Learning school day.

Issuing an E-Learning Day

In the event conditions are such that school must be canceled, administration will do its best to make that determination by 6:00am. Sometimes this is not possible, as conditions can change rather quickly in Southern Illinois, but the goal will be to make the determination by 6:00 am.

Once the decision is made, students, staff, and parents will be notified:

 • through our District call system
 • through our website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
 • through local tv and radio stations, as well as newspaper websites

If an E-Learning Day is implemented, everyone will be notified in the same manner as when school is canceled. Students will be expected to utilize the day to meet with their teachers virtually and work on their required assignments/activities as described below in the Student Assignments/Activities section.

Teacher Availability

All teachers are required to offer live video conferencing sessions on an e-learning day. Teachers are also expected to be available to students/parents during their work hours to answer questions. For many teachers, other systems may work better than email (Telephone, ClassDojo, Google Classroom, etc.) and staff are encouraged to utilize these other communication tools as the situation dictates. However, all teachers will check their email regularly and provide feedback and guidance to students/parents on an as needed basis.

The District understands that many teachers have their own responsibilities that may arise with these days (supervising their own children, shoveling snow, etc.). The District also understands that there will be time spent in follow up activities after the e-learning day (reviewing completed assignments, providing support for students without internet access, encouraging students to complete assignments, etc.). Staff will respond to all communication requests in a timely manner (within 24 hours) during scheduled hours. Teachers may communicate outside of office hours as needed.

Live Video Conferencing Sessions

Google Meet will be one of the primary video conferencing tools used to host live class sessions in communication with students during E-Learning Days for online learners. If your child is unable to attend a live session, the classroom teachers may provide either notes or a recorded version of the session. Elementary teachers with students in grade PreK-6 will include in their morning announcement the times students are to log in for live instruction. At grade levels 7-12, staff will use the abbreviated class times when scheduling synchronous (live) sessions.

CHS CMS

2nd hour 8:35-9:10 9:30-10:05

6th hour 11:35-12:10 12:30-1:05
7th hour 12:20-12:55 1:15-1:50

Student Assignments/Activities

It is important to remember that activities, especially at the primary grade levels where students are not issued a Chromebook to take home, should be about reinforcement and review of already learned material. In the event of a long-term closure, materials will build upon already learned material and introduce new concepts. Learning materials will be offered in a variety of ways either to be returned to the teacher or materials to be signed off by a parent, guardian or caregiver (digital assignments, projects, print material, sign-off Choice Boards of activities, etc.). It is also important to realize that many students may have other responsibilities (shoveling snow, watching siblings, etc.) or be in a different environment (at a grandparent’s house, in daycare, at work with a parent, etc.). For those students with multiple classes, remember that they will have work from each teacher.

 • PreK – K: Teachers will provide students with a “choice board” that will be sent home and/or electronically available to students/parents as soon as possible. It is important that the choice board not be solely dependent on the use of technology, as many grade school students may not have access to a device/internet during an E-Learning Day. Depending on student access to technology, it may be possible to add a “choice” to the choice board involving teacher communicated assignment. Teachers will provide students with an announcement on Google Classroom or other class communication programs announcing their assignment(s) by 8:00 am on the morning the E-Learning Day is initiated.
 • 1st – 12th Grade: Teachers will provide students with a Google Classroom announcement announcing their assignment(s) by the school start time on the morning the E-Learning Day is initiated. For students who may not have access to the internet, it is recommended that teachers have “alternative” assignments/activities that students may work on that are not dependent on technology. These alternative assignments/activities should be communicated to students/parents prior to the possibility of an E-Learning Day…for example, sending a packet home with the student(s) that is kept at home and ready to be completed if an E-Learning Day is initiated or providing an E-Learning assignment on Google Classroom. The district will make every attempt to provide technology to students/learning materials prior to an E-Learning Day.
 • Special Education and Related Services: Special education personnel will be available to students through electronic sources as applicable, based on student need and IEP goals. Modifications and adaptations will also be included in all assignments, based on the needs of the student and IEP goals. Individual goals and objectives will be addressed through assignments and activities provided by case managers.
 • Most teachers will be utilizing Class dojo and/or Google Classroom as their online Learning Management System.

Student Attendance

During E- Learning, attendance will be taken. The preferred method of collecting attendance is always a one-to-one daily connection between the teacher and the student. However, we recognize that this method is not available or practical for all student scenarios under an

E-Learning situation. We encourage and suggest several ideas for how classroom teachers can collect and count a student as present during an E-Learning Day.

 • Video conference “check-ins.”
 • Wellness checks coupled with a question on student engagement/participation in lessons.
 • Phone calls coupled with a question on student engagement/participation in lessons.
 • Text messages or email communications coupled with a question on student engagement/participation in lessons.
 • Packet collections by school personnel.

Grading

Students will be accountable for completing the assigned tasks either online or by printed materials in the same manner as any other school day. Incomplete work will be considered incomplete. Teachers are encouraged to hold students accountable for completing work as they would with any missing assignments. Completed work can either be turned in online or on an upcoming school day.

Technology

Between Thanksgiving and the end of February, the possibility of inclement weather will be monitored and allow teachers to send devices home with students. In the event, unexpected inclement weather arrives, an alternate option will be available for students and families to allow students an alternative to complete their work should a device not be in their possession. These alternative assignments will be in the form of choice boards, projects, reading and writing

assignments, etc. Teachers will also prepare E-Learning packets that can be sent home with students prior to the start of the bad weather.

Collinsville, Illinois – May 15, 2023 – Collinsville High School senior Paulina Gutierrez was awarded a $1,000 Scholar Athlete Award from GO! St. Louis.

Paulina participated in the Kahoks on the GO! club at CHS, running with teachers and students to train for the GO! St. Louis Half Marathon on April 2, 2023. She was chosen for the scholarship based on her GPA, attendance and 500-word essay about serving others. The award was presented by Stephanie True, Youth Programs Coordinator for GO! St. Louis.

She had more than 50 hours of community service while in high school, in addition to training and running the half marathon as part of the Students on the GO! program.

In her essay, Paulina wrote about running: “It may be used as a way to take out anger, sadness and fear. You may do it alone or with friends. It may be done anytime of the day, anywhere and everywhere. This inexpensive hobby has certainly made me a stronger person.”

“Paulina is a student athlete and leader who stands out among her peers for her personality, concentrated work ethic, desire to succeed, determination, extreme consciousness and being aware of others,” said Kahoks on the GO! sponsor Alicia Furlow.

Betsy Bovee 2023 IL PTA Vol of the YearApril 24, 2023 – Jefferson Elementary School PTA President Betsy Bovee was named the 2023 Outstanding Volunteer of the Year by Illinois PTA during their PTA Convention Award Celebration on April 22.

Each year Illinois PTA receives nominations from local PTA units recognizing outstanding contributions of their volunteers, teachers and administrators to the PTA mission. PTA’s mission is to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.

Betsy was nominated by Jefferson PTA Treasurer Laura Gottschalk.

Highlights from the nomination:

…Betsy has held the position of PTA president for the last several years, where she has worked to maintain a vibrant and active PTA. She has been a devoted volunteer, spending countless hours organizing events, planning fundraisers, and advocating for the families of Jefferson Elementary….

Betsy’s passion for PTA has truly been contagious. Our PTA recently earned recognition for our high membership numbers as a SILVER Star PTA, in large part due to Betsy’s hard work. She has led multiple membership drives and has worked hard to ensure that every Jefferson Elementary student is represented. She has altered the day, time, and location of our monthly meetings to try to accommodate as many families’ schedules as possible. She has spoken countless times about the benefits of becoming a PTA member. Betsy strives to get everyone participating in the PTA in some way, big or small….

Congratulations Ms. Bovee!

]]>
November 8, 2022 – When weather conditions make travel hazardous, CUSD 10 will declare an E-Learning Day, meaning students will learn remotely from home based on expectations determined by their schools/teachers.

The 2022-23 E-Learning Plan was updated on October 12, 2022.

In the event conditions are such that school must be canceled, administration will do its best to make that determination by 6:00 am.

Students will be expected to utilize the day to meet with their teachers virtually and work on their required assignments/activities.

Teacher Availability

All teachers are required to offer synchronous instruction on an e-learning day. Teachers may communicate outside of office hours as needed.

Live Video Conferencing Sessions

Google Meet will be one of the primary video conferencing tools used to host live class sessions in communication with students during e-learning days for online learners. If a student is unable to attend a live session, the classroom teachers may provide either notes or a recorded version of the session. Elementary teachers with students in grade PreK-6 will include in their morning announcement the times students are to log in for live instruction. At grade levels 7-12, staff will use the abbreviated class times when scheduling synchronous (live) sessions.

Student Attendance

During e- learning, attendance will be taken. The preferred method of collecting attendance is always a one-to-one daily connection between the teacher and the student. However, we recognize that this method is not available or practical for all student scenarios under an e-learning situation.

Updated August 30, 2022 – Kahok Athletics has released Kahok Stadium Student Spectator Guidelines for the 2022-23 school year.

These guidelines ensure games are enjoyable for students, players, coaches, parents and the community. Collinsville High School students (band, cheerleaders, dance squad and athletes) practice numerous hours so they are prepared for our extracurricular events.

In addition to CHS students, Collinsville High School is proud to welcome elementary, Dorris Intermediate and Collinsville Middle School students to the exciting athletic events that CHS offers.

In an effort to make Collinsville High School events safe and enjoyable for all spectators, the following guidelines for students in attendance are used at all home games:

Elementary, intermediate and middle school students must be accompanied to the game by a parent/guardian or responsible adult.

ALL Backpacks, bags, and purses are strictly prohibited. Any necessary bags are subject to search by school / security personnel. (updated 8/30/22 click HERE to read bag policy statement)

August 2022 – As part of August “Welcome Back” events for Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 staff, Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich announced the 2022 recipients of the Superintendent’s Quality & Excellence Award. The award is presented annually by the district superintendent in two categories: Certified Staff and Non-Certified Staff.

Individuals are nominated by district colleagues, and recipients are chosen by Dr. Skertich. Criteria for the Superintendent’s Quality & Excellence award include: rapport with students; relationship with peers; professionalism; classroom activities and use of content knowledge (certified staff); going above and beyond in their profession; and community involvement.

Mark Schusky/Collinsville High School Social Studies Teacher (Certified Staff)

Schusky was nominated by fellow CHS teacher Kyle Gordon, who wrote:

Teaching both ELL Government and Current Events is not an easy task. Every morning he arrives to create materials for his Current Events class at 6:30 a.m. based on the daily newspaper. He works tirelessly to develop lessons in his ELL Government Class that all learners can understand and relate to. He is dedicated to teaching all kids that walk through his door. Mark has a loving, fatherly rapport with students both in and out of his classroom. They are always in his classroom chatting about their day and lives. He is open, honest and supportive of every child he comes in contact with.

Very few have the professionalism that Mr. Schusky demonstrates. He is a role model for others to emulate. He is a constant professional in the classroom, in this building and in his role as a building rep when needed. Mark is a leader in this building. He may be a union official, but that is not what makes him a leader. He is a leader because of the time and effort he puts into each and every faculty member he comes in contact with. He is kind, patient, understanding, knowledgeable and supportive of everyone at CHS.

Each and every year Mark donates his time to read names at the annual Honors Convocation and Graduation. He spends hours practicing this craft to ensure every child’s name is read correctly. This is an unpaid labor of love.

Mark Schusky can be described as “Mr. Collinsville.” From his service on the Library Board, to service on the Gateway Center Board to community service throughout the area, Mark is a pillar of this community.

Claudia Gramaglia/District Translator (Non-Certified Staff)

Gramaglia was nominated by Special Education Director Alison Underwood & Public Relations Liaison Kimberly Collins

Claudia has been observed during DIAL Screenings to be very interactive and kind with the little ones. She is warm and makes the children feel at ease. She also works Summer School at our elementary schools and she does a great job working with the students in that setting.

Claudia is a team player. She gets along well with her peers. She is collaborative with staff to ensure that she is explaining everything correctly during IEP meetings. She covers others’ IEP meetings when the other translators are absent. She is always willing to help a teacher or other staff member make a phone call to parents when there needs to be a translator involved.

Claudia’s work translating communications for the district office is often a last minute assignment. She NEVER hesitates or complains. She steps up and ALWAYS finds a way to get it done on top of her already busy schedule. Knowing she can always be reached and is ready to help, are qualities that make her a valued and respected member of the team.

Claudia may be one of the most professional staff members in CUSD 10. She handles herself with grace at all times even in some very challenging situations. She is always polite and respectful to all parties involved and makes sure that parents feel heard and valued during IEP meetings.

In her role translating district communications to Spanish-speaking families, Claudia has access to proprietary information before it is public. She protects that information and does not engage in gossip or banter about content. She works tirelessly to make sure her translation communicates the English version of messages in the best way possible to ensure Spanish-speaking families receive accurate and comprehensible communication of complex issues.

Claudia always makes sure to meet deadlines with IEP translations and get general district information translated quickly for communication with families. She works well outside of her hours and beyond her responsibilities. This includes evenings, weekends, holidays and on her own vacation time.

There are numerous examples of Claudia going above and beyond to support the district’s communication efforts. When an urgent need arose in the summer of 2020, she was out of town without reliable internet access. She found a restaurant where she could sit and translate a letter families needed to receive that afternoon. When she has a day off and gets a text message about an urgent document that needs to be translated, she communicates her availability and gets to it as soon as possible. Recently, following the Uvalde, TX school shooting, Claudia anticipated a message might be going out from Dr. Skertich, so she contacted the district office to offer her services on stand-by – undeterred by the fact that school was already out for summer break and she was not working that day.

She takes very seriously the need for all CUSD 10 families to have timely communication. When the Illinois Department of Public Health released a complex COVID-19 flowchart that was not available in Spanish, Claudia painstakingly recreated it so our families could have access to that important information.

Claudia is involved with the Diversity & Equity committee. Her input and contributions are a valued part of the group’s efforts.

She is a dedicated partner in making sure the Spanish-speaking members of our Kahok community are valued and respected. She works hard to lead and support efforts to translate materials – such as subtitles for Dr. Skertich’s video messages, the district’s lengthy Return to Learn Plans, as well as letters and announcements – so all people in our community have access to information.

May 4, 2022 – Collinsville High School senior Angel Fabian was awarded a $1,000 Scholar Athlete Award today from GO! St. Louis and the Missouri Lottery. He participated in the Kahoks on the GO! club at CHS, running with teachers and students training for the GO! St. Louis Half Marathon.

“He was awarded this for having a wonderful GPA, great attendance, completing an essay of 500 words, completing at least 50 hours of community service while in high school and running the St. Louis on the GO! 1/2 marathon,” said Kahoks on the GO! sponsor Mrs. Furlow.

In his essay, Angel wrote, “I started to jog during the springtime (two years ago) and haven’t stopped since. It helped me gain my focus in school, my mental health and helped me set goals to improve on.”

Angel credited running with helping him with managing his time and grades. He stated, “Overall, jogging has impacted me more than I ever thought it would. I’m still wondering what more it’ll do for me later in life. I know I won’t be stopping anytime soon.”

March 21, 2022 – Two Collinsville High School students were recognized by the Collinsville CUSD 10 Board of Education during the regular meeting on Monday, March 22, 2022. Both were recognized for outstanding performance during the 2021-22 wrestling season.

They were introduced by CHS Athletic Director Clay Smith and congratulated by Wrestling Head Coach Alex Taylor.

Senior Austin Stewart
“Austin Stewart’s work ethic, dedication, coachability and leadership have led him down the path of success in our sport. He has demonstrated through his hard work, countless hours of training, and discipline, that he ranks among some the best Kahok wrestlers our program has ever had. We are extremely proud of him and while he will be missed, we are excited to see what the future holds for him. Austin finished his career at CHS as a 3x all-conference team member and a 2x state qualifier.”

Freshman Taylor Dawson
“Taylor Dawson made history this season by being the first girl wrestler in Collinsville Kahok wrestling history to not only qualify for the first ever IHSA Girls Wrestling State Tournament, but place as well. Taylor Dawson pinned her way through the state tournament and finished in second place. Her success is a reflection of her dedication to our sport and her drive to compete at the highest levels. We are extremely proud of her and her success on and off the mat. She comes to every practice, makes good grades and is always looking to improve. She is a great example of the kind of athlete we to strive to create here in Collinsville District 10. I have not doubt of her continued success and we forward to next season.”

The students each received a certificate of achievement signed by Board of Education President Gary Peccola and Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich.

February 14, 2022 – At tonight’s special Board of Education meeting, the board voted unanimously to amend the district’s Return to Learn plan with changes effective Tuesday, February 15, 2022. The changes are outlined in a communication sent to parents by Superintendent Dr. Skertich.

Español

Kahok Families,

Positive COVID-19 cases have declined among our students and staff to numbers we have not seen since early October. Madison County youth cases have steadily declined and the district continues to partner with health departments to host vaccine clinics for ages five and up. The current health of our students and staff is the best we have seen since early fall. Throughout the pandemic, we have closely monitored the health of our students and staff, the district will continue to make decisions using this data moving forward.

Recently, the Governor announced the statewide indoor mask mandate will be lifted for indoor venues on February 28th. The district pushed for local control in the summer of 2021 and in order to take another step towards normalcy, the Board of Education approved an updated Return to Learn Plan tonight adopting the Center for Disease Control (CDC) guideline that the wearing of masks be strongly recommended, effective tomorrow Tuesday, February 15, 2022.

While the district is strongly recommending masks, special considerations will be given to staff and students who have underlying health conditions. District personnel will be in contact with impacted families to discuss varied mitigation strategies that may be used in these situations.

It is important to note, masks are still required on school buses as public transportation guidelines are governed by Federal Regulations, therefore we ask students to carry a mask with them daily.

While we all want to put the pandemic in our rearview mirror, we have learned the past few years that a COVID surge may occur and there may be a time when the district, building, or specific classes may require masks for a short period of time.

While the district‘s mask policy is transitioning to strongly recommended, our other mitigation strategies will remain consistent and in place:

 • Cleaning protocols
 • Social distancing to the greatest extent possible
 • Frequent hand washing and proper hygiene
 • Students or staff with symptoms or not feeling well should remain home until a minimum of five days has passed since symptoms first appeared; asymptomatic; at least 24 hours with no fever without fever-reducing medication; diarrhea/vomiting have ceased for 24 hours and symptoms have improved; OR a documented alternative diagnosis.
 • Positive COVID-19 students and staff will be excluded for a minimum of five (5) days and up to ten (10) days and may return once their symptoms have subsided.
 • School health care professionals will continue to collaborate with area health department officials to confidentially provide information about people diagnosed with or suspected to have or exposed to COVID-19, including making notifications to staff and parents as soon as possible

The school district’s focus throughout the school year has been to provide a safe environment for students and staff, and maintain a consistent schedule allowing our students to interact with their peers and teachers academically and socially. We recognize there will be different views regarding whether or not to wear masks at school, however, bullying or inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated. Regardless of an individual’s choice whether or not to wear a mask, they should be treated with respect.

Last, I want to remind our communities and families that our district employees pride themselves in working with families and our communities to see students grow, mature and develop into young adults throughout their time attending Collinsville CUSD 10. As we move forward in these challenging times, I ask everyone to remember, the strength of our school district is the pride and support our communities, families and staff show our students by working together. This quality is one of our district’s greatest assets and should be everyone’s focus in the days, weeks and months ahead! #thekahokway

Sincerely,

Mark B. Skertich, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Kahok Families,

Winter weather has arrived! Only in the Midwest can we hit fifty-degree temperatures one day and see ice and snow accumulation less than twenty-four hours later. Please be safe in the days ahead as we endure February weather.

The health of our staff and students has improved drastically following three weeks of ½ hour early dismissal to accommodate the post-holiday COVID-19 surge. As a result, the district plans to return to our normal school day schedule on Monday, February 7th. Recent weeks have not been easy for our families, students and staff. We are grateful for the flexibility shown by everyone to adapt.

Beginning Monday, February 7th, following current public health guidelines, the district will resume optional Test to Stay for students who are close contacts to a positive case at school. Updated guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) regarding Test to Stay protocols says:

ISBE and IDPH now allow a strategy for close contacts to remain in school following exposure to COVID-19 through a Test to Stay protocol. Following an exposure occurring in the school setting that occurs during the school day (excludes extracurricular activities), close contacts are permitted to remain in the classroom as long as close contacts are tested twice during the period between close contact notification and day 7 after exposure. The last test occurring 5-7 days after last close contact from the date of exposure and all results are negative.

Families whose children are determined to be close contacts will be notified by their child’s school and may choose to participate in the Test to Stay program by scheduling an appointment using THIS LINK. (Please note: the calendar uses Google. If you do not have or want to create a Google account, please call 618-343-2740 x3006 to make an appointment).

February is Black History Month. The CHS Black Student Union created this slide presentation to be shared across the district for all of our schools to use. The interactive presentation includes the “why” behind Black History Month. This year the students focused the month-long celebration around prominent figures in history, including royalty, inventors, pioneers, cowboys, the Tuskegee Airmen, the Negro Leagues, Hollywood celebrities and the Civil Rights Movement. The BSU’s leadership of our Black History Month celebration is an example of the outstanding work our student body produces throughout the school year.

In another example of Kahoks working together to benefit our schools, the CHS Band’s “Stuffed Shells” fundraiser is underway. You can place an order through any CHS band member or by using the email address and payment option listed on the flyer included with this letter. Orders are being taken through Monday, February 7. Don’t miss a great opportunity to purchase stuffed shells, red and/or white sauce – all made with the Vivano family recipes that are famous in our community. The food is amazing and will benefit our tremendous band program district wide.

Don’t let the often gloomy February weather get you down. Activities are plentiful throughout the district right now. Basketball, cheer, dance, bowling, wrestling and pep band are in full swing each week. A great way to break up the winter months is to come out and watch our students compete and perform. Don’t forget to wear your purple and show your Kahok Pride!

Sincerely,

Mark B. Skertich Ed.D.

Kahok Families,

The effort put forth this week navigating the latest COVID-19 surge has been tremendous. The actions by our teachers, support staff, administrators, families, and partners First Student and Sodexo, were tremendous to meet our students’ academic, social and nutritional needs. It was no easy task changing course in the middle of the school year, and I am grateful for the collective response to make this work.

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) have reduced quarantines and exclusions for students and staff members who test positive for COVID-19, or are considered a close contact to a positive case, to five days. This guidance aligns with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

The district is adopting the new guidance immediately. As a result, all students and staff who were positive on or before Wednesday, January 12th may return on Tuesday, January 18th if they are fever free for 24 hours, have improved symptoms, and remain masked at schoolClose contacts on or before Wednesday, January 12th may return on Tuesday, January 18th if they remain asymptomatic. The shortened quarantine and exclusion will assist in making sure we have the staff to manage classrooms and decrease the length of student absences that are COVID-related. The district’s Return to Learn Plan will be updated and released to families early next week.

After careful consideration, we have decided to continue in-person instruction on Tuesday, January 18th by incorporating a shortened school day. Schools will dismiss ½ hour early every day. The shortened day will give our certified and non-certified staff additional time to balance combined in-person and live instruction for COVID-19 related absences; and allow our district to meet our students’ academic, social and nutritional needs. The district will maintain this schedule from January 18th through February 4th. At this time, it is anticipated the district will return to our normal schedule on Monday, February 7th.

This bus and school schedule is currently used on Wednesdays throughout the school year and is familiar to our staff, students and families. A change of this nature is not welcome at any point in the school year, but it is necessary at this time. Please review the student dismissal times below and adjust your daily routine for the next three weeks. We understand this may cause an additional burden on families and we apologize in advance. This change is designed to be temporary.

½ Hour Early Dismissal Schedule

Elementary Schools (Except Webster) 8:00 am – 2:15 pm
Elementary School (Webster) 8:00 am – 2:00 pm
Dorris Intermediate School 8:50 am – 3:05 pm
Collinsville Middle School 8:35 am – 3:00 pm
Collinsville High School 7:55 am – 2:25 pm

Cleaning protocols outlined in the district’s Return to Learn Plan and social distancing to the greatest extent possible will remain in place to provide a safe environment for our students and staff.

Due to the volume of rapid antigen tests our health staff is administering to symptomatic students, the district is going to suspend the “test-to-stay” option for students who are a close contact to a positive case at school. Once the surge subsides, we will revisit offering the test-to-stay option to all students exposed to a positive case. Thank you to our health staff for their amazing efforts every day.

What happens outside of school in the community and your home has an impact on our ability to keep kids in school. During this surge in COVID-19 cases, we need your help. Please review the information and protocols below to help us provide a safe environment for our students and staff:

 • Complete the daily COVID-19 checklist: Parents are reminded to review the COVID-19 symptom checklist each day before children leave for school. The checklist is posted on the district website (use this link) and the CUSD Connect district app. The app is free and is available on your phone’s app store.
 • Symptomatic People Stay Home: Anyone feeling sick or experiencing symptoms outlined in the COVID-19 checklist, should STAY HOME. If a child begins to feel sick at school, they should report their symptoms to the teacher or school nurse immediately.
 • Proper Masking: Students and staff are required to properly wear a face covering (mask) over their nose and mouth while indoors and on bus transportation. The full Face Coverings and PPE policy is on pages 6-7 of the district’s Return to Learn Plan
 • Family Responsibility: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is imperative for families to practice disease prevention outside of school, too. This includes simple actions like proper hand hygiene, physical distancing, face coverings and avoiding attending/hosting crowded gatherings. Use these links to see CDC recommendations to protect yourself and others from COVID-19: English or Spanish
 • Alternative Diagnosis: Depending on symptoms, even with a negative COVID test, documentation of an alternative medical diagnosis may be required for a child to return to school. This request is consistent with our district’s Exclusion for Communicable Disease policy. (Review the policy in English or Spanish.)
 • Proof of Vaccination: Children 5-years and older are eligible for COVID-19 vaccination. If your child’s vaccination status has changed – by becoming vaccinated or boosted – please make sure their school has the most up-to-date information by providing a copy of their vaccination card.
 • Vaccine Clinic Information: Our district has partnered with the Madison County Health Department and IDPH to host vaccination clinics after hours at several of our schools for the convenience of families and community members who want to get vaccinated. The next clinic is Monday, January 31 at Webster Elementary from 3-8 p.m. Appointments are strongly encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. To schedule an appointment, click HERE. Additional vaccination opportunities in our community are found HERE

As we experienced last year, the situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic is constantly changing. Updates will be provided to families with as much advance notice as possible. Thank you for your continued patience and your constant dedication to our students. Don’t forget to wear your purple and show your Kahok Pride!

Sincerely,

Mark B. Skertich, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Kahok Families,

We understand the stress an adaptive pause to in-person learning puts on everyone. Our district appreciates the flexibility of community partners and families as we move to remote learning for the next three days.

Attached is a summary of policies, expectations and resources applicable during the adaptive pause occurring this week on Tuesday (January 11), Wednesday (January 12) and Thursday (January 13). Remember, Friday (January 14) is a Teacher Institute and Monday, (January 17) is the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, so there are no classes on those days.

This information is also posted on www.kahoks.org. You should hear from your child(ren)’s teacher(s) and/or school with class- and building-specific instructions. Please reach out to them if you have any questions.

The new year may have started with uphill challenges, however, I am confident if we keep our focus on our students, we will get through the current trials thanks to the support of our families and the dedication of our staff. Stay healthy.

Sincerely,

Mark B. Skertich, Ed.D.
Superintendent

November 1, 2021 – When weather conditions make travel hazardous, CUSD 10 will declare an E-Learning Day meaning students will learn remotely from home based on expectations determined by their schools/teachers.

In the event conditions are such that school must be cancelled, administration will do its best to make that determination by 6:00am.

If an E-Learning Day is implemented, everyone will be notified in the same manner as when school is cancelled. Students will be expected to utilize the day to meet with their teachers virtually and work on their required assignments/activities.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE

During E- Learning, attendance will be taken. The preferred method of collecting attendance is always a one-to-one daily connection between the teacher and the student. However, we recognize that this method is not available or practical for all student scenarios under an E-Learning situation.

Students will only receive a “present” for attendance once work is completed. Incomplete work will be considered incomplete.

Teachers are encouraged to hold students accountable for completing work as they would with any missing assignments. Completed work can either be turned in online or on an upcoming school day.

TEACHER AVAILABILITY

Teachers will periodically monitor their email and respond to questions during their school hours. If you need an appointment please reach out to your teacher.

LIVE VIDEO INSTRUCTION

Google Meet will be one of the primary video conferencing tools used to host live class sessions in communication with students during E-Learning Days for online learners. If your child is unable to attend a live session, the classroom teachers may provide either notes or a recorded version of the session.

Elementary teachers with students in grade PreK-6 will include in their morning announcement the times students are to log in for live instruction.

For grade levels 7-12, staff will use the following abbreviated class times when scheduling synchronous (live) sessions:

CHS CMS
advisory 8:35-8:58
1st hour 8:00-8:35 9:01-9:44
2nd hour 8:45-9:20 9:47-10:30
3rd hour 9:30-10:05 10:33-11:16
4th hour 10:15-10:50 11:19-12:02
5th hour 11:00-11:35 12:05-12:48
6th hour 11:45-12:20 12:51-1:35
7th hour 12:30-1:05

STUDENT/PARENT TECHNICAL SUPPORT:

In the event of an issue with a student’s District assigned device, please call or email the technology support person at your child’s school. Click HERE for a list of tech support staff.

November 23, 2021 – Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich shared the following update with families and the community today:

Español

November 24, 2021

Kahok Family,

The 2021-22 school year has brought highs and lows throughout the first four months. There is one constant: We have been fortunate to have students at school, growing academically and socially as they interact with their peers and teachers.

Now that students are back in school full-time, however, we have encountered academic and social gaps; the direct result of “normal” being halted for such an extended time. While we are facing new challenges, we are fortunate to have dedicated staff, families, and community members willing to help meet our students’ needs. As we approach Thanksgiving, I would be remiss, if I did not express how thankful I am for the support that is provided to our students and school district on a regular basis.

Please click on THIS LINK to access the latest version of the district’s Return to Learn Plan. The most recent update includes guidelines for school-sponsored, off-site, overnight events, competitions and trips. Outside of academic and athletic competition, student travel has been limited throughout the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years. However, as we begin to look at the upcoming second semester, our hope is to allow school groups to resume field trips that enhance the educational experience.

After communication with legal counsel and the health department, new guidelines have been created that incorporate masks, permission slips, symptom checks, consent forms, and safety plans. Additionally, for overnight events, proof of full COVID-19 vaccination, or a negative PCR or Antigen Test within 72 hours of the event, will be required. The district continues to monitor the health of our students and staff with regards to COVID-19, and all field trips will be considered on a case by case basis.

The holiday season kicks off this week and from now through January 1st, there is a full agenda for schools and families. Please make note of these important dates and school events:

 • November 24th – November 28th Thanksgiving Break
 • December 9th CHS Winter Band Concert – 7:00 PM
 • December 10th CMS Winter Band Concert – 7:00 PM
 • December 23rd to January 2nd Winter Break

THANK YOU for your constant dedication to our students and don’t forget to wear your purple and show your Kahok Pride. On behalf of our entire school district, Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Mark B. Skertich Ed.D.
Superintendent

District facilities are available for use by employees for district-sponsored activities. In addition, outside organizations may request the use of district facilities.

 3. If the requested time for use of the facility is outside the normal work hours of the school’s staff, the building administrator will contact the Director of Buildings and Grounds to request any necessary custodial coverage.
 4. The building administrator (or designee) will submit the event (if applicable) to the online district calendar.

Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 Chief School Business Officer Uta Robison retired in July 2021 after 21 years of service in our business department. Her dedication to our students and staff leaves an admirable legacy in CUSD #10.

Dr. Robison grew up in West Germany and moved to the United States in 1979. She joined the district in May 2000 as an accounting supervisor. She had an undergraduate degree in mathematics with a minor in economics, as well as a Masters in Accounting. She remembers interviewing with then Chief School Business Officer Jeff Endres and Superintendent Dr. Dennis Craft. Having several education courses on her transcript made her a valuable addition to CUSD 10’s business office.

“My dad had a saying: ‘Plan your work and work your plan,'” says Robison. Shortly after she was hired by CUSD 10, she set a goal to attain certification to become a Chief School Business Officer (CSBO). When her predecessor retired in 2007, Robison became the district’s first female CSBO.

“It was my pleasure recommending Uta to the Board of Education 14 years ago for the Director of Business position,” said retired CUSD 10 Superintendent and current Treasurer of the Board of Education Dr. Dennis Craft, “Uta has an excellent work ethic. There were many nights and weekends she stayed and worked in her office to make sure the job was done correctly and on time. Her knowledge of school finance is outstanding and on many occasions was able to propose viable options to solve problems. Collinsville Unit 10 School District was fortunate to have such an individual as Uta Robison as the Director of Business.”

A self-proclaimed “life-long learner,” Robison recently completed requirements for a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from SIUE.

She had responsibility for managing the district’s $70 million budget. In addition, her duties included oversight of payroll and accounts payable; preparing and presenting financial reports to the Board of Education; coordinating bond issues; creating and keeping track of the district’s annual budgets; monitoring compliance with laws and regulations; responsibility for insurance matters; overseeing the school lunch program and district wellness policy.

Board of Education President Gary Peccola said, “The board is definitely going to miss Uta and her dedication to the district. She consistently made sure the board had all of the information we needed when it came to budgets, negotiations, bond issues and anything else to do with the district’s finances. If we asked for it, she got it for us. Uta was very helpful to me when I was a new board member. She always took the time to answer my questions and help me learn more about the district’s finances. I will always be grateful for her assistance then and through the many years that followed.”

Dr. Robison said her long work hours meant the district office became an extension of her home. She looks forward to spending more time with her husband, Rob, a retired Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps and Administrative Law Judge, as they pursue their many hobbies.

“As many of us know, Uta has a wide range of skills, talents and interests outside of finance that will undoubtedly make retired life interesting for her and Rob,” added Peccola, “The board would like to congratulate Uta and wish her all the best in her future adventures.”

Her interests and passions are well-known to CUSD 10 staff, especially her colleagues in the Administration Building. Dr. Robison is a self-proclaimed artist who creates projects from upcycled materials. She has a passion for creating something useful from discarded objects and many of her works were displayed in her office. She also collected student art from CUSD 10 schools and showcased it in the business office.

Dr. Robison is a licensed private pilot and escaped to the sky on many occasions to alleviate stress from her demanding job. She also enjoys welding/blacksmithing, horses, farming, windsurfing, kiteboarding and other water sports. Already fluent in German and English, she is learning Spanish in her spare time. She and Rob have plans to build a home on property that will include their own private airstrip.

“I’m grateful for every day. I am going to enjoy life, stay healthy and busy,” said Robison. “I look forward to new adventures and learning new things.”

“I was here to help educate kids and support teachers. I enjoyed working with people to get our mission done; being part of a community focused on kids.”

Collinsville CUSD 10 Superintendent Dr. Brad Skertich said, “I want to wish Uta nothing but the best in retirement and hope she enjoys her time in the air or on the farm. The Collinsville School District was fortunate to have access to her wealth of knowledge related to school finance, Excel and her ability to analyze financial matters. Thank you Uta!”

April 26, 2021 – Kreitner Elementary bilingual third-grade teacher Maria Hernandez was surprised today with the news that she had been named December 2020 Kahok Educator of the Month. The award was presented by Edward Jones Representative Jason Rehg and Kreitner Principal Dr. Kari Daugherty. The original presentation was delayed due to COVID-19 remote schooling in December.

Principal Dr. Daugherty said:

“Maria teaches bilingual third grade. If you ask her co-workers, they’ll tell you she collaborates with her colleagues, makes herself available to students outside of regular school hours, and finds ways to help families receive their packets. Because resources in Spanish are limited, she has created many student resources herself. She consistently goes the extra mile for her students and still stays on top of everything else that is demanded of a teacher. She really goes above and beyond while always maintaining a calm, loving spirit.”

Local Edward Jones Representative Jason Rehg sponsors the award each month during the school year to recognize outstanding educators in Collinsville CUSD 10.
