Doug and Marilyn Huber at CAVC Feb 28 2022February 28, 2022 – Collinsville Area Vocational Center (CAVC) has received a generous donation from long-time Collinsville residents Doug and Marilyn Huber to endow vocational scholarships. The announcement was one piece of news highlighted during February 2022 Career and Technical Education Month.

CAVC Director Joe McGinnis said, “The Huber family was looking to be philanthropic and help improve the community where they raised their family. They designated their gift to be split equally between the Kahoks Teaching Kahoks future teachers program and post-secondary scholarships for vocational students.”

Marilyn Huber was a school psychologist in Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 for 17 years before retiring. Their children Aaron (CHS Class of 2005) and Patrick (CHS Class of 2006) attended Collinsville schools. Doug’s father was the Superintendent of Schools in Westville, Illinois, which added to their family’s desire to support education.  Their passion for the Collinsville community, and new scholarship initiatives launched by CUSD 10 and CAVC, provided the catalyst for their philanthropy.

“I grew up in Collinsville and it’s where we raised our family,” said Marilyn, “Collinsville has such dedicated teachers and staff.  We are impressed with the innovative approach the district has taken to grow future teachers through the Kahoks Teaching Kahoks program.  And, as a former school psychologist, I know students have different talents and many thrive in the “hands-on” environment offered by Career and Technical Education. Access to both of these opportunities is important.”

“Our contribution to these scholarship programs will help make it possible for high school graduates to continue their education and move toward careers.  A simple act by our family will make a difference to students who are trying to pay for college or technical training,” she said.

“Mr. and Mrs. Huber’s passion to make a difference, and their love for the district, are evident in their generous contribution that will benefit our high school students for years to come and expand our work force in both education and the trades,” said Collinsville CUSD 10 Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich. “They embody one of our communities’ strongest qualities: a constant dedication to our students.”

The Huber gift is among several scholarship funds supported through the newly organized Collinsville Area Community Foundation.  For more information on supporting scholarships for Collinsville CUSD 10 and CAVC students, visit the Collinsville Area Community Foundation website.  Donations through CACF are tax deductible.

CAVC Promotes Career & Technical Education During February 2022 CTE Month

Collinsville Area Vocational Center currently boasts its highest enrollment in a decade as more students and families see Career and Technical Education as a practical path to the workforce.

“We are preparing students for careers through a wide variety of programs.  From long-established classes for the trades like welding and automotive mechanics, to courses in fields like education and cybersecurity, CAVC has diverse offerings that appeal to a broad-range of students,” said CAVC Director Joe McGinnis.

In addition to Collinsville High School, CAVC currently serves students from Civic Memorial High School, Dupo High School, East Alton – Wood River High School, Edwardsville High School, Highland High School, Lebanon High School, Mascoutah High School and Triad High School.  McGinnis says other local schools are considering becoming part of CAVC.

“Taking a course at the CAVC is the safest, most affordable way to learn about a future career,” he says, “Students can see if a field appeals to them and use vocational classes – which offer things like dual credit and professional certifications – as a springboard to the workforce and/or post-high school education.”

McGinnis says course popularity varies from year-to-year.  Currently, auto mechanics, criminal justice and welding top students’ lists.  Today, many CAVC classes are at capacity and have a waitlist. Program admittance is very competitive. Students are ranked based on academic performance, attendance and discipline during their early high school years to be accepted into vocational courses which are offered to juniors and seniors.

Current CAVC programs are: Auto Body Repair, Automotive Mechanics, Building Trades, Clinical Health Occupations, Cosmetology, Criminal Justice, Cybersecurity, Early Childhood Education, Electronics, Engineering, Food Service, K-12 Teacher Prep, Precision Machining, and Welding.

“For the 2022-23 school year, we will launch the Kahoks Teaching Kahoks initiative to instruct and recruit future K-12 educators. This will be done through 2 new courses, Teaching as a Profession and a 2nd year education field experience course. We hope to add additional new course offerings over the next three years. A dental assistant and agriculture program are two under consideration,” said McGinnis.

In March, CAVC will launch an updated career exploration project to make young students and their families more aware of CTE programs and career paths. The plan includes digital curriculum and a mobile career exploration trailer that will be brought to schools serving students in K – 8 grades.

“One of the long-term goals of CUSD #10 and CAVC is to increase career awareness and opportunities for students at all grade levels within the district,” said McGinnis, “ We have re-imagined and are rolling out new ways to increase career exposure to students in the lower grade levels. This will include a digital career curriculum for elementary students and a mobile career exploration trailer that will have 3d printers and LEGO stem kits that classroom teachers can reserve. As we roll out this initiative we will also be looking to add additional equipment and tooling to further expand opportunities for district students.”

Parents wanting to know more about Career and Technical Education, should contact CAVC Director Joe McGinnis at jmcginni@cusd.kahoks.org or 618-343-6141.

HEALTH EXAMINATIONS AND IMMUNIZATIONS

A student’s parent/guardian must present proof that the student was examined by a licensed physician and received the immunizations and screenings for preventable communicable diseases as required by the Illinois Department of Public Health within one year prior to:

  • Entering Pre-K, Kindergarten or first grade (if the child did not attend Kindergarten);
  • Entering the sixth, ninth and twelfth grades; and
  • Enrolling in an Illinois school, regardless of the student’s grade, when transferring into Illinois from out-of-state or out-of-country.

NOTE:  DURING ANNUAL ONLINE REGISTRATION, PLEASE REMEMBER TO COMPLETE THE HEALTH PAGE.

Failure to comply with the above requirements by October 15 of the current school year will result in the student’s exclusion from school until the required health forms are presented to the District.   If a student is considered homeless, the district will make every effort to assist with obtaining these requirements.

IMMUNIZATIONS must be up to date according to the IDPH guidelines.

  • If a medical reason prevents a student from receiving a required immunization by October 15, the student must present, an immunization schedule and a Statement of Medical Exemption* with the reasons causing the delay. The schedule and statement of medical reasons must be signed by the physician, advanced practice nurse or physician assistant responsible for administering the immunizations.
  • If there is a religious objection, a Certificate of Religious Exemption* must be completed by the parent/guardian, signed by a physician, presented to the school nurse/principal and approved by the district superintendent or designee.
  • Transfer students who are first-time registrants shall have 30 days following registration to comply with the health examination and immunization regulations.

A completed PHYSICAL EXAM includes all required fields (immunizations, examination results, system review, diabetic screening, lead risk assessment, physical education examination)

  • MUST be on the Illinois Certificate of Child Health Examination* form signed by a Physician/PA/NP including the office stamp/contact information.
  • The health history located on the back of the physical form MUST be completed and signed by the parent/guardian.
  • MUST be completed by October 15 of the required grade or may be subject to EXCLUSION from school.

DENTAL EXAMINATION

All children in Kindergarten, 2nd, 6th and 9th grades must present proof of having been examined by a licensed dentist before May 15 of the current school year in accordance with rules adopted by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Dental examinations are to be completed on the IDPH Proof of School Dental Examination* form and MUST include the dentist’s signature and office/clinic information.  The dental exam must have been completed within 18 months of May 15 of the required grade level.

A Dental Exam Waiver* must be on file if the student’s parents/guardians show an undue burden or lack of access to a dentist.

EYE EXAMINATION

All children entering Kindergarten or transferring from a school outside of Illinois (for the first time) are required to have eye exam performed by an eye doctor.  The Illinois Eye Examination Report* form must include the doctor’s signature and be completed within one year upon entry to an Illinois school.

SPORTS PHYSICAL

If your child will be participating in grades 7-12 sports, a sports physical is required annually.  (9th Grade physical exam may be used during freshman year only.)  The completed IHSA/IESA Physical* form MUST be completed and submitted to the school Athletic Department prior to tryouts/practice/play.  Sports physicals are valid for 395 days.

VISION AND HEARING SCREENING

The Illinois Department of Public Health requires that certain grade levels are screened for hearing and vision by certified vision and hearing technicians.

Hearing screenings are conducted for early childhood, pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, grades 1-3, special education, and new students to the districts.  Vision screening are conducted for early childhood, pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, second grade, eighth grade, special education, and new students to the district.

Vision screening is NOT a substitute for a complete eye exam by an eye doctor.  However, if a student has completed an eye exam within the previous 12 months, and that evaluation is on file at the school, the child will not need a screening.  An Eye exam by an eye doctor is still required for kindergarten and students who are attending an Illinois school for the first time.

Teachers and Parents may request an additional screening by contacting the SCHOOL NURSE.  If a student fails either the hearing or vision screenings, the parent/guardian will be notified and a referral for further examination may be needed.

Contact your SCHOOL NURSE if you are in need of assistance finding resources, etc. We are more than willing to assist you in any way we can to prevent your child’s exclusion from school.

CAVC Student Registration

CAVC Course Offering Guide

The Collinsville Area Vocational Center is a two-year, public vocational training center for high school juniors and seniors. Housed on the campus of Collinsville High School, CAVC is a cooperative program which also includes students from Civic Memorial High School, Dupo High School, East Alton-Wood River High School, Edwardsville High School, Highland High School, Lebanon High School, Mascoutah High School and Triad High School.

Students receive hands-on technical skills training in:

  • Auto Body Repair
  • Automotive Repair
  • Building Trades
  • Clinical Health Occupations
  • Cosmetology
  • Criminal Justice
  • Cyber Security
  • Dental Assisting
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Electronics
  • Food Service
  • Precision Machining
  • Welding

Skills can be used to:

  • Enter the work force directly after high school
  • Continue on to a junior college or trade school
  • Prepare students for the military or trade unions
  • Provide a foundation for continuation at a four-year college

How does it work?
CAVC offer 2 1/2 hour-long classes primarily for juniors and seniors in high school.  It is very important that students are aware of graduation requirements and complete as many of those as possible in their freshman and sophomore years, so they have time in their schedules to take vocational classes as a junior or senior.  Most vocational classes do not have any prerequisites, but a few require student to take the Accuplacer test through Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) in order to qualify.  This test is administered at Collinsville High School prior to enrollment.

Enrollment
Enrollment procedures take place during the students registration period at their home school. Enrollment is open to juniors and seniors. Programs may be taken one or two years.

Attendance
Students taking a course at CAVC divide their day between their home school and the Vocational Center.

Transportation
Each participating high school will determine transportation arrangements for their students.

Tuition
Tuition will be paid by the home school district for each student unless specified differently by the home district. Students may have some additional costs for personal tools, equipment, and materials.

What are the benefits?
Most classes at CAVC include free college credit through Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC).  Some, such as the engineering class, offer the option for possible credit at other universities.

Student in CAVC classes learn occupational-related theory and workplace skills, in addition to hands-on skill development in their specified career area.

Guest speakers from the various professional fields are brought in to help students fully understand their career options.  In addition, many trade schools, colleges and businesses, who provide training and certifications, come in to help students evaluate educational options beyond high school.

Finally, employers frequently contact CAVC looking for employees in specific fields.  This allows our teachers to make recommendations to assist students in obtaining additional training and/or employment.

The academic focus and competition among the 1,060 competitors was intense according to Sheryl Modeer, BSN, BSEd, RN. Modeer, the CHS HOSA sponsor and Clinical Health Occupations Instructor, noted “During the awards ceremony, 14 times a CHS student was recognized on the main stage.”

The following students were awarded Top 10 in their event:

Justin Peterson–Veterinary Science

The rapidly changing health care system needs dedicated workers who, in addition to their technical skills, are people-oriented and capable of playing a leadership or followership role as a member of a health care team.

HOSA is for students interested in pursuing a career in health and biomedical professions. It’s purpose is to develop leadership and technical competencies through a program of motivation, awareness and recognition — an integral part of the instructional program. This student-led organization provides opportunities for students to practice and refine their academic, technical, leadership, and teamwork skills to achieve seamless transition from education to careers.
