Congratulations to the Collinsville High School staff nominated and chosen by their colleagues to be Faculty Member of the Month during the 2023-24 school year:

CHS Teacher Lynn VermeirenThe September Faculty Member of the Month was nominated by two of her colleagues.  They wrote, “She is one of the most patient people I have ever met.  Her kindness, compassion and sensitivity are on display every single day both inside and outside of her classroom.  She educates some of the most vulnerable students in this school and though it can be a challenge day to day, she does it with an open mind, open heart and with a smile on her face.  She advocates for her students and makes sure that inclusion is just not a fancy educational term to throw around…she makes it happen.”  Congratulations to Ms. Lynn Vermeiren – the September Faculty Member of the Month!

Dianna Altenberger

The October Faculty Member of the Month has called the library of CHS home for a few years now.  Her nominators wrote, “She is usually the first point of contact for anyone entering the library.  She is welcoming and offers help to anyone who walks in the door (staff or student).  She fields a variety of questions/requests each day with a positive attitude and she is willing to see these situations through or direct them to the correct person. She creates displays/bulletin boards that promote character education, display positive messages and create a welcoming environment both in the library and around the building.  She also designs and helps print posters for teachers around the building. She keeps things running smoothly by maintaining the copiers, printer, laminators and troubleshooting computer issues. She has a good balance of maintaining high standards and being an adult that students can feel comfortable confiding in.” For all of these reasons we proudly name Ms. Dianna Altenberger the October Faculty Member of the Month! Congratulations Dianna!

CAVC Director Joe McGinnisThe November Faculty Member of the Month has been very busy over the course of the last two years working on a truly grand project that will better not only CHS, but our community as a whole.  His dedicated and untiring work to bring together business leaders, politicians, community partners, staff and students to help literally build the future has been greatly appreciated and admired.  For his work on making the new AVC center a reality, we proudly present Mr. Joe McGinnis with the November Faculty Member of the Month!  Congratulations!

CHS Athletic Director Clay SmithThe CHS January Faculty Member of the Month has worn many hats while at CHS.  In his current role, he is an amazing manager, organizer, planner and true team player.  His nominators wrote, “Year after year, he puts on the greatest Basketball Tournament in the state, helps produce amazing athletes and scholars, works with countless community members and makes things run as smooth as they possibly can no matter if it is a sporting event, community event or co-curricular activity.  He is a dedicated Kahok that believes in this school, this community and our kids.”  For these reasons, we name Mr. Clay Smith the CHS January Faculty Member of the Month!  Congratulations Coach Smith!

Rachel HarlanThe March Faculty Member of the Month’s nominee wrote, “She has done a wonderful job building the Criminal Justice program in the CAVC and has dedicated so much time in the creation of activities and curriculum for that program.  She also has worked tirelessly putting together the Criminal Justice Jamboree that so many students and teachers enjoyed on Friday. And her stewardship of the Kahok Closet benefits countless Kahoks each and every day.”  For all of these reasons we name Mrs. Rachel Harlan the March Faculty Member of the Month!

The April Faculty Member of the Month’s nominee wrote, “I would like to nominate Brian Ryterski to be recognized as the faculty member of the month.  Brian consistently finds ways to be helpful, make things better, or build new things with his students.  I do not know a fraction of the ways he is helping students but I see how excited and proud students are of the projects they finish through his class.  Brian brings in wood that he has cut at his home to reduce the cost of projects to give his students additional opportunities.  He spends a lot of time planning and finding ways to help students build their individual projects, not just simply entire class projects.  Brian is also willing to help the school or teachers at the drop of a pin.  I know he has a group of kids working on the picnic benches outside the vocational offices in the quad.  In the spring, many teachers like to take advantage of beautiful days and take their kids outside to work so it will be very nice to have tables that you do not fear will break or give you splinters.
Our vocational classes are so vital and Brian does such a good job at building relationships with his students and helping them develop important skills that they will use in the future.”
We are proud to name Mr. Brian Ryterski the April Faculty Member of the Month!

April 16, 2024 – In continued partnership with our transportation provider, First Student, Collinsville CUSD 10 is launching FirstView:ParentView, a bus tracking and parent communications app for your smartphone or desktop.

  • Live Tracking
The ParentView map screen shows you the location and direction of your student’s bus, for both morning and  afternoon trips. Parentview also provides caregivers with confirmation when the trip is complete.
  • Customizable Bus Proximity Notifications
With ParentView, you set up a geofence around the assigned bus stop and are alerted when the bus enters the  geofence. The geofence size and alert times are customizable, so parents are in control of their notifications.  Students should still be at their assigned bus stop 10 minutes prior to the scheduled arrival time.
  • Custom Alerts and Messages
Set up push or email notifications alerting you when your student’s bus enters the geofence. Connect up to  three additional email accounts (including your own) to receive email alerts. This is a great feature for  grandparents or caregivers!
  • Multi-Stop View
Buses for all your students can be tracked with ParentView. Using individual colors for each student, the bus  assigned to each student’s route appears on the map in the same color as the student for easy viewing.
  • Secure and Easy Access
ParentView requires a password-protected account for app set-up. This way, only you can view your student’s  stop! These codes are provided by your district/school.

April 2, 2024 – Collinsville CUSD 10 is preparing for a real world learning opportunity on Monday, April 8, 2024:  a total solar eclipse that passes across Illinois.

The district has provided ISO protective viewing glasses for students and staff.  Schools are planning supervised activities with safety in mind.  Parents should prepare their children to carefully follow instructions and wear the glasses properly.

Safe Viewing According to NASA Science:

Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing. Safe solar viewing glasses, or “eclipse glasses”, are not  regular sunglasses.

Viewing any part of the bright Sun through a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will instantly cause severe eye injury.

For more information, visit: go.nasa.gov/EclipseSafety

Opt-Out Form for K-6 Grades

Any K-6 parent or guardian who DOES NOT wish for their child to participate in the April 8th eclipse event, please fill out the information in THIS FORM by Friday, April 5th, 2024.  Please complete a form for each child that WILL NOT participate.

If your child DOES have your permission to participate in the event, you do NOT have to fill out the form.

If You Have Questions

If you have questions about what your child’s class/school is planning for the eclipse, please contact the teacher or building principal.

Collinsville Middle School Art Teacher Kendra Cline receives Educator of the month award March 2024March 26, 2024 – Collinsville Middle School art teacher Kendra Cline was recognized today as March 2024 Kahok Educator of the Month. The award was presented by CMS Principal Brad Snow and local Benjamin F. Edwards financial advisor Jason Rehg.

In his nomination of Ms. Cline, Principal Snow wrote:

Ms. Cline has brought an excitement to the art class that has been missing for a number of years.  Not only do students who enjoy art love her class, but those who are not art lovers leave her class with a different appreciation of the arts.  She has students complete a variety of projects with many forms of media.  Students are proud to see their projects displayed in the Commons Area and outside of the main office.  Ms. Cline works with students who struggle and wants to see them succeed.  Her door is always open to other teachers who want to learn from her.  She takes part in after school activities and loves to see students excel outside of the classroom as well.  She is a great role model for students and teachers alike.
Benjamin F. Edwards Financial Advisor and Vice President/Investments Jason Rehg sponsors the award each month during the school year to recognize outstanding educators in Collinsville Community Unit School District #10.

Dakota Tostado and IEA Officers March 2024

March 15,  2024 – Collinsville High School second-year social studies teacher Dakota Tostado was named the Illinois Education Association 2024 Bob Haisman Teacher of the Year during the organization’s annual Representative Assembly in Rosemont, Illinois, on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

The Bob Haisman Teacher of the Year recognizes a “new teacher” IEA member who has shown outstanding accomplishments in their involvement in the local, state, and/or national association; in their profession; in promoting public education; and in enhancement of the image of early career educators  in the Association, the school or the community.

Tostado was nominated by Kathleen Cervera, IEA Early Career Chairperson, who wrote:

…Dakota is a second year social studies teacher at Collinsville High School in Collinsville, Illinois.  As a first year teacher, Dakota became engaged with Association work. He embraces the work that his local, region, and the IEA have been doing to support public education, educators, and students…

Dakota is enthusiastic about the work that is being done at the local, regional, and state levels
of the association. He is also passionate about recruiting other early career educators to attend local and state events. Dakota’s ambition, positivity, enthusiasm, and emerging leadership makes him a qualified candidate for this award. I am excited to see the many things that Dakota will accomplish as he continues to be an active and engaged IEA member.

The Illinois Education Association, an affiliate of the National Education Association, is a union of more than 135,000 members composed of Illinois elementary and secondary teachers, higher education faculty and staff, educational support professionals, retired educators and college students preparing to become teachers.  Their mission is to effect excellence and equity in public education and to be THE advocacy organization for all public education employees.

February 1, 2024 – Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 is asking all parents to complete the annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials survey by March 29, 2024. The survey is an opportunity for you to share your thoughts on important elements of school effectiveness.  Please read the information below to learn more.

Kahok Families:

Now through March 29, 2023 parents, students and teachers across Illinois will have an opportunity to participate in the statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child’s school. As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school.

On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:

  • Collaborative Teachers
  • Involved Families
  • Supportive Environment
  • Ambitious Instruction

Prior research in more than 400 schools has shown that schools that were strong on at least three of these “5Essential” indicators were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains in math and reading than those that were weak on three or more Essentials.

All teachers and 4th through 12th grade students will also be responding to this survey. 5Essentials reports will be generated for schools if their teachers and/or students meet the response rate threshold of 50 percent. These reports will be sent to schools and districts in May 2024 and will also be included in the State School Report Card next fall.

Our district chose to provide the optional parent survey supplement. If at least 20 percent of parents complete this survey, a parent supplement report will also be generated. The parent data will NOT be reported on the State Report Card, but will be used as feedback for our schools and district.

Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.

The Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be conducted now through March 29, 2024.  To take the survey please use THIS LINK.

For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, visit:   https://www.5-essentials.org/illinoisIf you have any questions or concerns, please contact UChicago Impact Client Services at 1-866-440-1874 or impact-surveys@uchicago.edu.

Sincerely,

LaToya Berry-Coleman
Director of Curriculum and Assessment

About the 5Essentials Survey

What is the 5Essentials Survey?

What students, teachers and parents say about schools can serve as important indicators for school success.

The Illinois 5Essentials Survey provides a comprehensive picture of a school’s organizational culture in an individualized report measuring five “essentials” critical for school success:

  • Effective Leaders
  • Collaborative Teachers
  • Involved Families
  • Supportive Environment
  • Ambitious Instruction

The five factors of success are based on thirty years of research at the University of Chicago in more than 400 schools.  Their findings indicate that schools that were strong on at least three of the 5Essentials were 10 times more likely to make substantial gains in improving student reading and math than schools that were weak.

When is the 5Essentials Survey?

The survey window opens January 29 and continues through March 29, 2024.

Why is the 5Essentials Survey important?

All district schools are required to participate in an annual school learning conditions survey. The surveys serve as an opportunity for schools to reflect on progress since the previous year.

Latoya Berry-Coleman, CUSD 10 Director of Curriculum and Assessment, underscores the importance of participation, “We use the 5 Essentials Survey feedback to set school improvement goals in the areas of leadership,  instruction, and family engagement.”

How will the survey responses be used?

The results factor into each school’s Summative Designation and Equity Journey Continuum, both of which are displayed on the Illinois Report Card.

Principals and superintendents will receive their 5Essentials Reports in May. Survey results will also be reported publicly on the UChicago Impact Reporting Website in June.  School and district report cards are released on the State School Report Card website in the fall.

Kahok Families,

The tragedy that occurred in Perry, Iowa, is devastating and there are no words to accurately express our sympathy for the loss of life and those injured, as well as their families and the community. Violence of this nature is a harsh reminder that safety must remain our number one priority and our district must be vigilant.

The safety and welfare of our students and staff is a top priority in our school district. Each year our safety protocols are reviewed and adapted, and new measures added. Changes and adjustments are the result of open lines of communication between law enforcement, first responders and district officials. These channels of communication allow for proper training, incident readiness and procedure changes to occur. Efforts to provide a safe learning environment are constantly evolving.

As we begin 2024, I want to remind families this is a difficult time of year as we unwind from the holidays, endure cold temperatures and look forward to spring. If you have a concern, observe a disturbing social media post or worry about an individual’s mental health, do not hesitate to communicate with school principals, staff or law enforcement. The goal is to always be proactive in helping others, and address potential risks before they arise. Our ability to look out for each other and avert a potential event is only as good as the information we get from families, students and community members. Your active involvement is a vital part of the district’s efforts to not only provide a safe environment for our schools, but to come to the aid of others.

We encourage you to call 911 if there is an imminent danger; and share non-emergency information with our principals, counselors, or local police by contacting the dispatch numbers for each community. (See attachment.)

I have also included resources to help you and your family discuss and process what occurred this past week.

Our Kahok community has always come together to stand with each other and support the needs of our school district. At this time, we must again rely on that strength to do our best for our community and our students.

Sincerely,
Mark B. Skertich Ed.D.
Superintendent

Beginning in May 2023, nominations for the 2024 class of inductees were solicited from the public.  In August, the eleven members of the Hall of Fame Selection Committee – four from the school district and seven representing the community at large – chose this year’s Kahok Hall of Fame inductees from a lengthy list of worthy individuals and teams.

To be eligible, a candidate must have graduated from Collinsville High School, worked for Collinsville CUSD #10 or be affiliated with the Collinsville CUSD #10 communities. Individuals inducted into the Hall of Fame must be at least 30 years of age prior to being inducted.

The Collinsville CUSD 10 Kahok Hall of Fame has two divisions:

  • Distinguished: Individuals are recognized for community service, academic achievement, professional accomplishment and/or school district employment.
  • Athletic: Individuals, teams and coaches are recognized for their success and accomplishments.

“Our district is really excited to recognize our alumni, residents and employees for their community service, academic achievement, professional accomplishments, service to the district, athletic success and accomplishments,” said Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich.

“It was a challenge and an honor for the committee to review and select the Collinsville Kahok Hall of Fame Class of 2024,” added Skertich, “We are extremely proud of this year’s inductees and look forward to our  community  celebrating their accomplishments in February.”

2024 Collinsville CUSD 10 Kahok Hall of Fame Inductees:

1965 Basketball Team (Athletic Achievement): The 1964-65 Kahok basketball season was supposed to be a “rebuilding year” after an upset loss in the super sectionals ended the 1963-64 season. However, everything came together that winter to bring home Collinsville High School’s second state basketball championship.  Under the leadership of legendary Collinsville basketball coach Vergil Fletcher and assistant coach Frank Pitol, with grit and perseverance, as well as a historic command of Fletcher’s 1-2-2 “ball press” defense, the ‘65 team accrued a 30-2 season, 12-0 conference record, and state championship.

1986 Soccer Team (Athletic Achievement): The 1986-87 Kahoks capped an 18-5-2 season with Collinsville High School’s second boys soccer state championship. Collinsville beat Libertyville in the state tournament final match 2-1 in a nail-biter that included four overtimes.

William (Bill) Baumgartner (Distinguished Achievement):  A 1976 graduate of Collinsville High School; as well as graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, University of New Orleans and Harvard Law School, retired U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Bill Baumgartner’s 33 year military career included serving as The Judge Advocate General/Chief Counsel (TJAG) and Seventh District Commander of the Coast Guard. He is the recipient of the Legion of Merit Award for his actions during the global war on terror.

Bob Bone (Athletic Achievement): Bob Bone was a three-year starter for Kahok Basketball leading up to his graduation from CHS in 1973. He played on two regional and sectional championship teams and two Elite Eight teams. Bone was named All-Conference, All-State and All-State Tournament as a senior.  At University of Missouri-St. Louis, Bone started every game for four years, and was a three-time NCAA Division II All-American. He was also an academic All-American and earned an NCAA postgraduate scholarship. His career as an athletic director and basketball coach includes twenty-years at Collinsville High School.

Brenda Holdener (Distinguished Achievement):  Captain Brenda Holdener enlisted in the U.S. Navy following her 1978 graduation from Collinsville High School. She earned degrees from Oregon State University, the Naval War College and University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.  During her 31-year Navy career, she served as a combat helicopter pilot, navigator on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and USS Kitty Hawk, commanding officer of a helicopter squadron, and command center director for North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). She was the first female commander of the USS Wasp, a multipurpose amphibious assault ship.  In the early 1990s, Holdener was part of a panel that spoke before Congress regarding the combat exclusion law which prohibited women from serving in combat positions.

Francesca “Frannie” Kolesa (Athletic Achievement): CHS Class of 2010 graduate Frannie (Steiner) Kolesa’s calm and cool demeanor helped lead the Kahok Girls Bowling team to the state championship in 2010; to date the only IHSA state championship girls team in school history.  At the state tournament, Kolesa’s 2,756 (229 average) pins, including three consecutive strikes in her final frames, helped the Lady Kahoks clinch the team championship, and earned her the individual state title.  She was named 2009-10 SIHSBC Player of the Year and St. Louis Post-Dispatch Female Athlete of the Year.

Dominique Manley (Athletic Achievement): Kahok middle-distance runner Dominique Manley graduated from Collinsville High School in 2010 holding eight school records; seven still standing today. During his high school years, he was a two-time 800m, and one-time 4X800m relay Madison County champion; and 4x400m Southwestern Conference relay champion.  Manley made three appearances at IHSA State, including when he won the 800m state championship in 2010. He continued his track career at Kansas University where he competed individually and as part of Jayhawk relay teams.

Ken Oberkfell (Athletic Achievement): Ken Oberkfell, a 1974 graduate of Collinsville High School, learned baseball growing up in Maryville, Illinois, and as a Kahok at CHS.  He was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1975, which launched his long career as a professional baseball player and coach.  The highlight of his Major League career was being a member of the Cardinals’ 1982 World Championship team as part of “the best infield in baseball.”

Dennis Pace (Athletic Achievement): The 1965 Kahok state championship basketball team was led by center Dennis Pace. He averaged 25.6 ppg during their 30-2 season.  He was the state tournament’s leading scorer, and earned All-State and All-American honors.  After graduating in 1965, Pace took his skills on the court to the University of Illinois where he excelled in the classroom, too, earning both All-Big Ten and All-American academic honors.  After college, he returned to Collinsville High School as a physical education instructor and coach.

Tom Parker (Athletic Achievement): Basketball player Tom Parker graduated from Collinsville High School in 1968.  At 6 feet 6 inches tall, Parker was a three-year starting center for Kahok Basketball.  During his record-setting career at CHS, he scored 2,041 career points and set many school records. In high school, he earned All-State honors twice, and was named an All-American his senior year. At the University of Kentucky, his standout performance continued: All-SEC First Team, Academic All-SEC Team, and co-SEC Player of the Year. Parker was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1972 NBA draft.

John A. “Jack” Renfro (Distinguished Achievement): Jack Renfro dedicated his career to public education.  Renfro, a 1950 graduate of Collinsville Township High School, was a multisport Kahok; a four-year contributor in basketball, track and baseball, including captain of the 1950 basketball team that took 4th in state, and the record holder of both 100- and 220-yard dash. After graduating from SIU Carbondale and service in the U.S. Army in South Korea, he began his career as a teacher and coach in several Illinois communities. In 1970, he returned to his hometown, where he was an educator for several years before serving as superintendent for 22 years.  John A. Renfro Elementary is named in his honor.

John M. Renfro (Distinguished Achievement): John Renfro is a 1978 graduate of Collinsville High school where he was a member of National Honor Society and science club, officer of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and captain of the cross country and track teams.  Next, he followed the path of several relatives who earned degrees at SIU Carbondale. There he earned the business degree that would become the foundation of a career that has included senior executive roles at Zenith, Gateway, The Walt Disney Company, HP, AECOM and Capital Group. He is currently an executive advisory board and founding member of SemperVirens Venture Capital in California.

Everett Singleton (Distinguished Achievement):  Everett Singleton was a pioneer in ending racial discrimination and segregation in the Collinsville public school system. Singleton was born in 1914 and raised in Collinsville during segregation. He attended Lincoln School for Blacks in the community, but graduated from high school elsewhere because Collinsville Township High School was not desegregated until 1940.  He earned a teaching degree from Illinois State Normal University and returned to Collinsville where he would serve as a teacher, and eventually, the final principal of Lincoln School for Blacks. Singleton’s leadership and character helped convince the Board of Education to close the school and integrate its students and staff into other schools. Singleton taught at Summit Elementary and Webster Elementary until his death in 1970.

Kevin Stallings (Athletic Achievement): While growing up in Collinsville, Kevin Stallings developed a passion for basketball.  Stallings played guard at Collinsville High School for four years under legendary coach Vergil Fletcher. When he graduated in 1978, the Kahoks had collected three conference championships and two appearances in the state tournament; and Stallings had set records in career assists, season assists and season steals. He went on to play basketball at Purdue University for American Hall of Fame basketball coach Gene Keady. After college, Stallings became an assistant coach at Purdue, then University of Kansas. Over the next 25-years, he served as head basketball coach at Illinois State University, Vanderbilt University and University of Pittsburgh.

Kahok Families,

As 2023 comes to a close, I want to thank our staff, administrators, families and communities for their constant dedication to our students.  Our students continue to see success in the classroom and while participating in co-curricular activities.  This wouldn’t be possible without the support given to them outside of school.  We are fortunate to call Unit 10 home and look forward to more success in 2024!

Winter Break begins Friday, December 22, and extends to Tuesday, January 2, with students and staff returning on Wednesday, January 3.  It’s safe to say everyone is looking forward to a little downtime.  In between the holidays, don’t miss the opportunity to attend the Prairie Farms Holiday Classic at Fletcher Gymnasium Wednesday, December 27 – Friday, December 29.  Don’t forget:  The Kahok Hall of Fame Class of 2024 will be announced at halftime of the Collinsville vs. Decatur Eisenhower game scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.  Don’t forget to wear your purple, come watch some basketball and be ready to cheer for the Kahoks!

Our district has partnered with the Southern Illinois Health Foundation to provide school physicals, immunizations and treatment for common ailments (cold, cough, sore throat, earache, etc.)  Their offices are open for in-person visits at CMS on Mondays and Tuesdays, and via tele-health on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Please call (618) 578-5701 to schedule an appointment.  Life rarely slows down and SIHF is here in a convenient setting to assist our families throughout the year.

Attached you will find information about CHS Band’s annual stuffed shells fundraiser.  Here’s the link to place an order. Take advantage of this once-a-year opportunity to support our high school band program and enjoy a delicious Kahok tradition.

I want to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday season with family and friends.  Please be safe!

Happy Holidays and Go Kahoks!

December 20, 2023 – A simplified and redesigned version of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be available by December 31, 2023.  FAFSA is required to apply for financial aid for college from the federal government, state governments, and most colleges and universities.

All undergraduate students should file the FAFSA, even if they think they won’t qualify for financial aid. The FAFSA determines a student’s eligibility for need-based aid, including work-study options and the Federal Pell Grant, but it also gives access to federal parent and student loans.

The FAFSA usually goes live in October, however, a new streamlined version is being introduced for the 2024-25 school year.  The release of the new form was pushed to December.

Preparing for the FAFSA

Flier for CHS FAFSA Help Night January 2024When the 2024-25 FAFSA opens, the application will be posted to:  https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa.

If you are uncertain as to how to fill it out or want additional assistance, Collinsville High School will host a FAFSA Completion Night on January 10th from 6pm to 8pm in the CHS Library.  The CHS Counselors and Financial Aid experts from local universities will be on hand to assist you in filling out the application and answering any questions.

Here are three things you can do now to prepare for the FAFSA opening:
  • First, both the student AND their parent need to create your FSA ID and log in information.  You can do that by using THIS LINKWhen you create your username and password please write it down or keep it somewhere so you can access it to sign in to the FAFSA when it opens.
  • Second, gather all required documents.  (2022 Federal Income Tax Returns, 2022 records of untaxed income, 2022 records of your assets, etc.)
  • Third, have a list of the schools your student has applied to or will be applying to because you will be sending the FAFSA information to them directly in the FAFSA portal.

THIS LINK will take you to a playlist of brief videos to understand what information and documents you’ll need to fill out the FAFSA form.
