2024 Kahok Hall of Fame InducteesCollinsville, Illinois – December 27, 2023 The Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 Kahok Hall of Fame announced the 2024 class of inductees during a halftime ceremony at the Collinsville Prairie Farms Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament in Fletcher Gymnasium at Collinsville High School.

The Hall of Fame was established in May 2022 “to recognize athletic and personal accomplishments, exemplary citizenship, contributions to society and actions that brought distinction and honor to all associated with Collinsville Community Unit School District #10.”

The 2024 group is the second to be enshrined in the Kahok Hall of Fame. Twenty-one individuals and teams were honored as the inaugural class last year.

Beginning in May 2023, nominations for the 2024 class of inductees were solicited from the public.  In August, the eleven members of the Hall of Fame Selection Committee – four from the school district and seven representing the community at large – chose this year’s Kahok Hall of Fame inductees from a lengthy list of worthy individuals and teams.

To be eligible, a candidate must have graduated from Collinsville High School, worked for Collinsville CUSD #10 or be affiliated with the Collinsville CUSD #10 communities. Individuals inducted into the Hall of Fame must be at least 30 years of age prior to being inducted.

The Collinsville CUSD 10 Kahok Hall of Fame has two divisions:

  • Distinguished: Individuals are recognized for community service, academic achievement, professional accomplishment and/or school district employment.
  • Athletic: Individuals, teams and coaches are recognized for their success and accomplishments.

“Our district is really excited to recognize our alumni, residents and employees for their community service, academic achievement, professional accomplishments, service to the district, athletic success and accomplishments,” said Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich.

“It was a challenge and an honor for the committee to review and select the Collinsville Kahok Hall of Fame Class of 2024,” added Skertich, “We are extremely proud of this year’s inductees and look forward to our  community  celebrating their accomplishments in February.”

2024 Induction Dinner Tickets and Information:

The 2024 inductees will be celebrated February 15, 2024 at the Gateway Center in Collinsville, Illinois.  Doors open at 5:00 p.m.; followed by dinner at 6:00 p.m.  The inductee presentations begin at 6:45 p.m.  The cost is $40 per person.  Tables seating eight can be requested. Tickets for this event are limited and must be purchased in advance. Ticket sales end on February 1, 2024.

2024 Collinsville CUSD 10 Kahok Hall of Fame Inductees:

1965 Basketball Team (Athletic Achievement): The 1964-65 Kahok basketball season was supposed to be a “rebuilding year” after an upset loss in the super sectionals ended the 1963-64 season. However, everything came together that winter to bring home Collinsville High School’s second state basketball championship.  Under the leadership of legendary Collinsville basketball coach Vergil Fletcher and assistant coach Frank Pitol, with grit and perseverance, as well as a historic command of Fletcher’s 1-2-2 “ball press” defense, the ‘65 team accrued a 30-2 season, 12-0 conference record, and state championship.

1986 Soccer Team (Athletic Achievement): The 1986-87 Kahoks capped an 18-5-2 season with Collinsville High School’s second boys soccer state championship. Collinsville beat Libertyville in the state tournament final match 2-1 in a nail-biter that included four overtimes.

William (Bill) Baumgartner (Distinguished Achievement):  A 1976 graduate of Collinsville High School; as well as graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, University of New Orleans and Harvard Law School, retired U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Bill Baumgartner’s 33 year military career included serving as The Judge Advocate General/Chief Counsel (TJAG) and Seventh District Commander of the Coast Guard. He is the recipient of the Legion of Merit Award for his actions during the global war on terror.

Bob Bone (Athletic Achievement): Bob Bone was a three-year starter for Kahok Basketball leading up to his graduation from CHS in 1973. He played on two regional and sectional championship teams and two Elite Eight teams. Bone was named All-Conference, All-State and All-State Tournament as a senior.  At University of Missouri-St. Louis, Bone started every game for four years, and was a three-time NCAA Division II All-American. He was also an academic All-American and earned an NCAA postgraduate scholarship. His career as an athletic director and basketball coach includes twenty-years at Collinsville High School.

Brenda Holdener (Distinguished Achievement):  Captain Brenda Holdener enlisted in the U.S. Navy following her 1978 graduation from Collinsville High School. She earned degrees from Oregon State University, the Naval War College and University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.  During her 31-year Navy career, she served as a combat helicopter pilot, navigator on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and USS Kitty Hawk, commanding officer of a helicopter squadron, and command center director for North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). She was the first female commander of the USS Wasp, a multipurpose amphibious assault ship.  In the early 1990s, Holdener was part of a panel that spoke before Congress regarding the combat exclusion law which prohibited women from serving in combat positions.

Francesca “Frannie” Kolesa (Athletic Achievement): CHS Class of 2010 graduate Frannie (Steiner) Kolesa’s calm and cool demeanor helped lead the Kahok Girls Bowling team to the state championship in 2010; to date the only IHSA state championship girls team in school history.  At the state tournament, Kolesa’s 2,756 (229 average) pins, including three consecutive strikes in her final frames, helped the Lady Kahoks clinch the team championship, and earned her the individual state title.  She was named 2009-10 SIHSBC Player of the Year and St. Louis Post-Dispatch Female Athlete of the Year.

Dominique Manley (Athletic Achievement): Kahok middle-distance runner Dominique Manley graduated from Collinsville High School in 2010 holding eight school records; seven still standing today. During his high school years, he was a two-time 800m, and one-time 4X800m relay Madison County champion; and 4x400m Southwestern Conference relay champion.  Manley made three appearances at IHSA State, including when he won the 800m state championship in 2010. He continued his track career at Kansas University where he competed individually and as part of Jayhawk relay teams.

Ken Oberkfell (Athletic Achievement): Ken Oberkfell, a 1974 graduate of Collinsville High School, learned baseball growing up in Maryville, Illinois, and as a Kahok at CHS.  He was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1975, which launched his long career as a professional baseball player and coach.  The highlight of his Major League career was being a member of the Cardinals’ 1982 World Championship team as part of “the best infield in baseball.”

Dennis Pace (Athletic Achievement): The 1965 Kahok state championship basketball team was led by center Dennis Pace. He averaged 25.6 ppg during their 30-2 season.  He was the state tournament’s leading scorer, and earned All-State and All-American honors.  After graduating in 1965, Pace took his skills on the court to the University of Illinois where he excelled in the classroom, too, earning both All-Big Ten and All-American academic honors.  After college, he returned to Collinsville High School as a physical education instructor and coach.

Tom Parker (Athletic Achievement): Basketball player Tom Parker graduated from Collinsville High School in 1968.  At 6 feet 6 inches tall, Parker was a three-year starting center for Kahok Basketball.  During his record-setting career at CHS, he scored 2,041 career points and set many school records. In high school, he earned All-State honors twice, and was named an All-American his senior year. At the University of Kentucky, his standout performance continued: All-SEC First Team, Academic All-SEC Team, and co-SEC Player of the Year. Parker was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1972 NBA draft.

John A. “Jack” Renfro (Distinguished Achievement): Jack Renfro dedicated his career to public education.  Renfro, a 1950 graduate of Collinsville Township High School, was a multisport Kahok; a four-year contributor in basketball, track and baseball, including captain of the 1950 basketball team that took 4th in state, and the record holder of both 100- and 220-yard dash. After graduating from SIU Carbondale and service in the U.S. Army in South Korea, he began his career as a teacher and coach in several Illinois communities. In 1970, he returned to his hometown, where he was an educator for several years before serving as superintendent for 22 years.  John A. Renfro Elementary is named in his honor.

John M. Renfro (Distinguished Achievement): John Renfro is a 1978 graduate of Collinsville High school where he was a member of National Honor Society and science club, officer of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and captain of the cross country and track teams.  Next, he followed the path of several relatives who earned degrees at SIU Carbondale. There he earned the business degree that would become the foundation of a career that has included senior executive roles at Zenith, Gateway, The Walt Disney Company, HP, AECOM and Capital Group. He is currently an executive advisory board and founding member of SemperVirens Venture Capital in California.

Everett Singleton (Distinguished Achievement):  Everett Singleton was a pioneer in ending racial discrimination and segregation in the Collinsville public school system. Singleton was born in 1914 and raised in Collinsville during segregation. He attended Lincoln School for Blacks in the community, but graduated from high school elsewhere because Collinsville Township High School was not desegregated until 1940.  He earned a teaching degree from Illinois State Normal University and returned to Collinsville where he would serve as a teacher, and eventually, the final principal of Lincoln School for Blacks. Singleton’s leadership and character helped convince the Board of Education to close the school and integrate its students and staff into other schools. Singleton taught at Summit Elementary and Webster Elementary until his death in 1970.

Kevin Stallings (Athletic Achievement): While growing up in Collinsville, Kevin Stallings developed a passion for basketball.  Stallings played guard at Collinsville High School for four years under legendary coach Vergil Fletcher. When he graduated in 1978, the Kahoks had collected three conference championships and two appearances in the state tournament; and Stallings had set records in career assists, season assists and season steals. He went on to play basketball at Purdue University for American Hall of Fame basketball coach Gene Keady. After college, Stallings became an assistant coach at Purdue, then University of Kansas. Over the next 25-years, he served as head basketball coach at Illinois State University, Vanderbilt University and University of Pittsburgh.

Operation Food Search and Neighbors Credit Union will have representatives at Kahok Stadium Friday night, September 29, with an informational table where fans can learn more about food insecurity in the bi-state area, receive information about food assistance, and make a financial contribution to help families living with food insecurity. Please note:  No physical food donations will be accepted at the game.

Collinsville High School’s participation in Tackle Hunger will be featured on KSDK-St. Louis during their Friday night broadcasts.

How can the community get involved?

Throughout the week, community members can use the Tackle Hunger QR code to make a monetary donation to Operation Food Search on behalf of Collinsville High School.  Financial donations can also be made at the football game Friday night.

Ms. Pat Adams and Jordan GaryMay 23, 2023 – Twenty twenty-three Collinsville High School graduate Jordan Gary is the first recipient of the Pat Adams Lady Kahok Scholar Athlete scholarship.

Pat Adams, a 1956 graduate of Collinsville High School, announced her decision last fall to fund a scholarship through the Collinsville Area Community Foundation.  The Kahok superfan known to all as “Ms. Pat” was inspired by others she saw stepping up to support Collinsville Community Unit School District #10.

“I was planning to put something in my will to set-up a scholarship,” said the 84-year-old, “When I read about giving through the Collinsville Area Community Foundation, I decided now was the right time to do it. I can make a difference and meet people benefitting from my scholarship.”

Ms. Pat is a pioneer in women’s athletics who has seen firsthand the positive impact Title IX has had on opportunities for young women in sports.  Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 “prohibits sex discrimination in any educational program or activity receiving any type of federal financial aid.”

She frequently shares her stories with students and provides them with a copy of “Let Me Play: The Story of Title IX: The Law That Changed the Future of Girls in America” by Karen Blumenthal.  The scholarship is an additional way she recognizes the opportunities afforded today’s Lady Kahoks.

The Pat Adams Lady Kahok Scholar Athlete scholarship was established for a graduating CHS female student athlete who plans to attend college after graduation, selection criteria emphasize academics as well as athletics.  One $5,000 scholarship will be awarded each year.

Ms. Pat said Jordan Gary’s application was strong in both areas.  Gary will attend St. Louis University in the fall of 2023 to major in psychology and continue her soccer career on the SLU women’s soccer team.

Despite high school athletics being impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic her freshman year, Gary went on to participate in basketball, track and soccer for the remaining three years; and cross country for one year.  She lettered in all of her sports, and was named to all-conference and all-sectional teams. She was captain of the girls soccer team her junior and senior years.

Gary was on the CHS honor roll all four years of high school, and was academic all conference for cross country, basketball, soccer and track.  She was active in KAHOKstrong, National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society and a contributor to the Kahoki school newspaper.

Gary says her life experiences during the pandemic, including the sudden loss of her father from a heart attack, have motivated her to persevere and succeed: “I now have a different mindset every time I step on the field, court or track.  I am playing to make my dad proud as he watches me from above.  Because of the lessons and qualities I have gained from this loss, I have been able to maintain good grades in school and continue to be successful in my athletic endeavors.”

“It is an honor to receive this scholarship,” said Jordan Gary, “I think Ms. Pat has a big impact and has provided some big shoes to fill.”

Support Local Scholarships

The Pat Adams Lady Kahok Scholar Athlete scholarship is supported through the Collinsville Area Community Foundation. CACF is a public charitable organization as defined by Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. All contributions and gifts are tax deductible.  Donations and bequests are accepted from and disbursed to individuals, groups or businesses. The Hall of Fame was established in May 2022 “to recognize athletic and personal accomplishments, exemplary citizenship, contributions to society and actions that brought distinction and honor to all associated with Collinsville Community Unit School District #10.”

Beginning in June 2022, nominations for the 2023 class of inductees were solicited from the public.  In September, the eleven members of the Hall of Fame Selection Committee – four from the school district and seven representing the community at large – began the formidable task of selecting the inaugural class of Hall of Fame inductees from a lengthy list of worthy individuals and teams.

To be eligible, a candidate must have graduated from Collinsville High School, worked for Collinsville CUSD #10 or be affiliated with the Collinsville CUSD #10 communities. Individuals inducted into the Hall of Fame must be at least (thirty) 30 years of age prior to being inducted.

“Our district has a long and storied list of alumni, residents, students and employees who are worthy of recognition for their community service, academic achievement, professional accomplishments and service to the district; and a long history of student athletes, alumni and coaches that have experienced a great deal of athletic success and accomplishments,” said Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich.

“It was a challenge and an honor for the committee to review and discuss so many deserving Kahoks to create the first class of Hall of Fame inductees,” added Skertich, “We look forward to the community reminiscing and celebrating these individuals and teams with us.”

22-23 Football Team and Student Keshawn Thomas Honored Dec 2022December 20, 2022 – At their regular monthly meeting on December 19, 2022, the Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 Board of Education honored students and staff who made history this school year: the 2022-23 Kahok Football Team and student Keshawn Thomas.

Kahok Football

Coaches and players from the 2022-23 Kahok Football Team were recognized for their history-making season:  most football wins in a season (nine); first football team to win nine consecutive games; first football team to make the playoffs in back to back seasons; first football team to win an IHSA playoff game in school history.

Certificates signed by Board of Education President Gary Peccola and Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich were presented by CHS Principal Daniel Toberman.

Keshawn Thomas

Keshawn Thomas is the first Kahok to complete the US Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship program through CUSD 10’s partnership with the City of Collinsville.

Collinsville’s initiative, which launched a year ago, was the first registered apprenticeship program in the area for high school students with disabilities.  Collinsville High School students, who are 16+ and developmentally ready to begin the transition from school to work, have training opportunities through Gateway Center in housekeeping and events support, and the Parks & Recreation Department in landscaping.

Keshawn successfully completed the landscaping apprenticeship program and has been hired as an  employee of the Collinsville Parks & Recreation Department.

The CUSD 10 registered apprenticeship program is coordinated through Madison County Employment & Training and St. Clair County Intergovernmental Grants Department – Workforce Development Group.  Keshawn will officially receive his apprenticeship certificate of program completion at the Collinsville City Council meeting on January 24, 2023.

Special Education Supervisor Tara Glynn and CHS Secondary Transitional Experience Program (STEP) coordinator Catherine Kulupka congratulated Keshawn and presented his certificate of recognition from Board President Mr. Peccola and Superintendent Dr. Skertich.

October 18, 2022 – Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 Kahok Special Olympics Athletes participated in their first “unified” competition when Illinois Special Olympics Region J hosted its first Unified Bowling event at St. Clair Bowl on Sunday, October 16, 2022.

According to the Special Olympics website:

“Special Olympics is dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences. Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding

In Unified Sports, teams are made up of people of similar age and ability. That makes practices more fun and games more challenging and exciting for all. Having sport in common is just one more way that preconceptions and false ideas are swept away.”

Members of Collinsville High School’s Kahok Krazies spirit group volunteered to be unified partners with the Kahok Special Olympics Bowlers for the competition.

Special Olympics had 20 Unified Doubles in 6 divisions. Groups/Schools participating included: Collinsville, East St. Louis, PTOEC, Clinton County, and Supporting Community Independence. There were also two entries in the Unified Team event, both from East St. Louis.

Collinsville had 5 unified groups and 2 single bowlers participate. The Kahok unified partner pairs were:

Athlete: Mckenna Bair  Unified Partner: Adelyn Johnson
Athlete: Olivia Gill  Unified Partner: Lainey Bolandis
Athlete: Kaitlyn Tipton Unified Partner: Megan Janson
Athlete: Brandon McCullar Unified Partner: Gracie Smith
Athlete: Shawn Poindexter  Unified Partner: Lucas Geisen

Single Bowler Athlete: Bethany McCullar took silver
Single Bowler Athlete: Brian McCullar took 4th place

“The unified event was the best experience I’ve had in my 7 years of coaching Special Olympics,” said Coach Lynn Vermeiren, “It was great to see students with intellectual disabilities working alongside students without intellectual disabilities on the same team. These types of events lead to understanding and friendship. Parents of both sets of students commented on what a meaningful experience this was for their child. I’m very proud of these Kahoks!”

Vermerien see the Kahoks competing in more Unified Sports, “Unified events lead to more inclusion of students with disabilities. It improves social skills and acceptance for all that are involved. It promotes teamwork, communication, friendship, and hopefully, lasting memories for those involved.”

The October 6 Region J event was the biggest Unified Bowling event in the State of Illinois.

September 28, 2022 – Collinsville High School 1956 graduate Pat Adams announced her intention to provide a scholarship designated for a Lady Kahok scholar athlete.

The Pat Adams Lady Kahok Scholar Athlete Scholarship was established for a graduating CHS female student athlete who plans to attend college after graduation.  There will be one $5,000 scholarship awarded a year.

Adams attended Illinois State Normal University (today Illinois State University) and became a physical education teacher. She earned a master’s degree from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She taught elementary and junior high PE for 34 years – 31 in East Alton School District #13.  She officiated softball, field hockey, basketball and volleyball throughout the area for many years.

Pat has been interested in sports her entire life.  When she was a student at Collinsville High School in the mid-1950s, female athletes were limited to intramural volleyball, basketball and softball, where they did not compete against other schools; and were members of the gender-specific Girls’ Athletic Association (GAA).  She is pleased with the opportunities afforded today’s Lady Kahoks and wanted a way to reward those who successfully balance the demands of athletics with academics.

“I want this scholarship to reward someone who has worked hard to be a good student,” said Adams.

Her desire to pay it forward comes from an anonymous cash donation given to her when she was a young student teacher. “I received assistance and I want to pass it along,” she said, “Young people need to be encouraged. If we have the capacity to help someone, we should go ahead and do it.”

Adams moved back to her Collinsville hometown and reconnected with the Kahoks when she retired in 1994.  She admittedly “bleeds purple” and is a superfan cheering at countless Kahok men’s and women’s athletic competitions.  “Ms. Pat” gets to know students, coaches and families. She often shares stories and the history of Title IX with today’s athletes to build a bridge between her generation and theirs.

CHS Athletic Director Clayton Smith said, “Pat Adams is a Kahok!  Her support for our Kahok Student Athletes and coaches is greatly appreciated.  Pat is a pioneer for female athletics, and her generosity in providing scholarships for our student athletes to attend college is a fantastic opportunity.”

“I was planning to put something in my will to set-up a scholarship,” said the 84-year-old Adams, “When I read about giving through the Collinsville Area Community Foundation, I decided now was the right time to do it. I can make a difference and meet people benefitting from my scholarship.”

She wants her generosity to be an inspiration to others:  “People need to see this happening.  It doesn’t have to be a huge amount. Anyone can make a difference.”

“Pat exemplifies the love and support our students receive from our community regarding academic and extracurricular success,” said Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich, “Her generosity will positively impact our future graduates for generations to come.”

The Pat Adams Lady Kahok Scholar Athlete Scholarship application must be submitted by April 3, 2023 for consideration.  Information will be posted soon on the CHS Counseling Department’s scholarship webpage.

Update to Collinsville High School Kahok Athletics Spectator Guidelines

August 31, 2022 – Effective immediately, fans and visitors are prohibited from bringing all backpacks, bags and purses to Collinsville High School stadium and gymnasium athletic events.

Any necessary bags – medically essential bags and diaper bags when accompanying an infant/toddler – are subject to search by school/security personnel. Clear bags are not allowed.

“This change is being made preemptively, and out of an abundance of caution, to provide the safest possible environment for our students, families and fans,” said Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich, “These changes implement policies similar to what other high schools, colleges and large venues require of their guests.”

Kahok Athletics asks for patience from Kahok fans and visitors entering school games. All guidelines and protocols are in place to provide a safe, secure and positive experience for student athletes and spectators attending events at Kahok Stadium and Vergil Fletcher Gymnasium.

May 31, 2022 – Today, Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 announced the creation of a Hall of Fame to celebrate accomplishments of the many Kahoks who have brought positive recognition to our community over the years.

Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich shared the Hall of Fame news in the following letter:

Kahok Nation,

On behalf of the district and Board of Education, I am excited to announce the creation of the Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 Hall of Fame.  The Hall of Fame has been established to recognize students, alumni, community members and employees for individual and team successes, and other notable accomplishments.

I have been fortunate to interact with many different people from our communities the past three years.  Our talks often turn to the amazing things our students, staff, alumni and community members have accomplished.  Kahok Nation is a special place and we have a rich history to celebrate.  The timing is right for the establishment of the Collinsville CUSD #10 Hall of Fame.

In recent weeks, I have met with district and community leaders to envision how to best capture Kahok Pride and honor the accomplishments of individuals and teams who have brought recognition and distinction to our community. We plan to gather nominations this summer and induct the Collinsville CUSD #10 Hall of Fame Class of 2023 during a special event in February.  Next week we will announce more details about this exciting endeavor.

Our district has numerous individuals and teams that are deserving of this kind of recognition.  We hope to memorialize their accomplishments for the Collinsville School District and our respective communities to share and embrace for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Mark B. Skertich Ed.D.
Superintendent

March 21, 2022 – Two Collinsville High School students were recognized by the Collinsville CUSD 10 Board of Education during the regular meeting on Monday, March 22, 2022.  Both were recognized for outstanding performance during the 2021-22 wrestling season.

They were introduced by CHS Athletic Director Clay Smith and congratulated by Wrestling Head Coach Alex Taylor.

Senior Austin Stewart
“Austin Stewart’s work ethic, dedication, coachability and leadership have led him down the path of success in our sport.  He has demonstrated through his hard work, countless hours of training, and discipline, that he ranks among some the best Kahok wrestlers our program has ever had.  We are extremely proud of him and while he will be missed, we are excited to see what the future holds for him.  Austin finished his career at CHS as a 3x all-conference team member and a 2x state qualifier.”

Freshman Taylor Dawson
“Taylor Dawson made history this season by being the first girl wrestler in Collinsville Kahok wrestling history to not only qualify for the first ever IHSA Girls Wrestling State Tournament, but place as well. Taylor Dawson pinned her way through the state tournament and finished in second place.  Her success is a reflection of her dedication to our sport and her drive to compete at the highest levels.  We are extremely proud of her and her success on and off the mat.  She comes to every practice, makes good grades and is always looking to improve.  She is a great example of the kind of athlete we to strive to create here in Collinsville District 10.  I have not doubt of her continued success and we forward to next season.”

The students each received a certificate of achievement signed by Board of Education President Gary Peccola and Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich.
