]]>October 13, 2023 – On October 10, 2023, the Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 Board of Education appointed Jennifer Hasamear of Collinsville to fill a vacant position on the board.
Ms. Hasamear was chosen after the board of education conducted interviews with all applicants who wished to be considered to fill the vacancy that occurred when board member and vice president Tim Hasamear passed away in August 2023.
In conformity with Illinois School Code, 105 ILCS 5/10-10, the CUSD 10 Board of Education solicited letters of interest from individuals who wanted to be considered for appointment by the board to fill the vacancy. Applications were collected between August 24 and September 8, 2023. Interested persons filed a letter of interest, resume and explanation of how they would positively impact the Collinsville School District.
“The board was fortunate to have a good panel of applicants to choose from to fill the vacancy,” said Board of Education President Gary Peccola, “Jenn is well-qualified and will make a good addition to the board. We are looking forward to working with her.”
Hasamear will serve until the next regular school board election, at which time a candidate will be elected for the position.
Jennifer Hasamear is a 1995 graduate of Ursuline Academy in St. Louis, MO. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication from Webster University. Jenn became part of the Collinsville community in 1999 when she worked as a local reporter. After 10+ years as a community reporter, she transitioned to a career in marketing communications. Today she is communications manager for S. M. Wilson & Co.
She is married to Tim P. Hasamear, and was daughter-in-law of Tim R. Hasamear who served on the Collinsville CUSD 10 board of education prior to his death. She has two sons, and two granddaughters; her sons and one granddaughter currently attend Collinsville schools. Her stepdaughter and stepson (deceased) graduated from Collinsville High School.
Jenn is an active volunteer throughout the community. Her positions have included Kreitner PTA president for three years and Collinsville Teepee board member/marketing chairman for 10+ years. She has been involved with the CMT YMCA Riptide Swim Team Parent Advisory Committee, Gateway Rush Boys Fundraising Committee, Collinsville Baseball Softball League (CBSL), Collinsville Aquapark Gators, Learning Tree Preschool, KIXX United FC, Metro Alliance FC, Metro East Titans Swimming, Collinsville Area Soccer Association (CASA), Maryville Khoury League, and Italian Fest.
She says her goals on the board of education are to “continue providing the safest environments for our students, faculty and staff within our facilities; while also giving our students the best opportunities and technology to leave our district and go into the world with confidence and fearlessness to take the next step.”
Hasamear took the school board oath of office on October 10, 2023 during a special meeting. She will complete the necessary training to be an Illinois school board member.

]]>March 16, 2023 – For the first time in Kahok history, Collinsville High School students competed in the International Theatre Excellence Awards. Four CHS students competed, and seniors Maleah Gilliland and Thalia Mills received overall scores of superior. The two advance to Indiana University Bloomington on June 19, 2023 to compete at the International Thespian Festival.
Every year, thousands of students from Thespian troupes around the world participate in the Theatre Excellence Awards or the “Thespys.” They progress from their school auditoriums to chapter qualifying events to the international stage.
Thespians are scored by a panel of adjudicators and earn ratings of fair, good, excellent or superior for their presentations. Thespians who earn overall superior ratings at a qualifying event (chapter, regional or alternate qualifier) are invited to the final round of adjudication at the International Thespian Festival.
Next, Thespians who earn overall superior ratings during the ITF round of adjudication are celebrated for their superior achievement, and those Thespians who earn the top-most scores in each category are presented with a Thespy Award.
To qualify for advancement to the international level of competition:
Maleah Gilliland scored an overall superior with a solo acting performance. Solo acting performers must do two contrasting monologues and are judged on acting transitions, characterization, voice, movement and gestures, and execution.
Thalia Mills scored an overall superior with a set design presentation. Thalia presented her set design for the drama club’s fall play, Puffs. Set designers are judged on presentations, research, interpretation, design justification and execution.
Additional CHS 2022-23 competitors:
The two additional CHS students who competed this year in the Theatre Excellence Awards were Katelyn Berger and Nevaeh Papp. Both submitted in the Solo Song category and received excellent ratings.

]]>September 29, 2020 — Collinsville, Illinois — The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has named Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 (CUSD 10) elementary music teacher Jennifer Bhooshan the 2021 Illinois Teacher of the Year for the Southwest Region.
Mrs. Bhooshan teaches kindergarten through fourth grade music at Maryville Elementary and Webster Elementary schools in Collinsville CUSD 10. She was nominated by Maryville Elementary Principal Carmen Loemker.
“Jennifer Bhooshan is an outstanding music educator, advocate for children, role model for young teachers, and supporter of the arts. She develops meaningful relationships with students and demonstrates constant enthusiasm for her profession. Her lessons include culturally diverse music and she works with teachers to provide cross-curricular lessons that incorporate movement and dance. I am thrilled Mrs. Bhooshan is being recognized for her excellent teaching,” said Principal Loemker.
Each spring, outstanding Illinois teachers are nominated from school districts throughout the state. Nominations are disaggregated by region. The top scorers are selected as Illinois Teacher of the Year regional winners and represent their region as Teacher of the Year for the upcoming calendar year. Illinois’ official representative in the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) National Teacher of the Year program is chosen from the regional representatives.
In her nomination letter, Principal Loemker wrote: “Mrs. Bhooshan has gone above and beyond, using Donors Choose to secure instruments that students use across grade levels throughout their time at Maryville Elementary. In addition, she is highly respected by our PTA to the extent that their major fundraiser in 2018 was dedicated to purchasing musical instruments for her classroom. I see her incorporate these instruments daily, engaging children, building confidence, exploring newly discovered talents and interests, as well as forming relationships through music and its messages.”
In addition to her work in the classroom, Mrs. Bhooshan works after hours to prepare students for musical presentations for parents, facilitates student performances for peers during school, and helps organize and execute district-wide music events.
Collinsville CUSD 10 Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich said, “Jennifer’s energy and passion toward ensuring all students learn is incredible for our district and students, and a perfect example of why music education is so vital.”
Mrs. Julie Evans, a Maryville Elementary parent, said, “Mrs. Bhooshan is by far one of the most amazing teachers that my children have had the privilege of learning under. As parents we are so grateful to have her in their young lives. We know that she has left a lasting impact on them just by being herself and being so passionate about her craft. If Mrs. Bhooshan could be with them for the rest of their school careers, they would be the luckiest kids in the world. I can’t say enough about the love and enthusiasm she passes along to her students. My children are better people because of her!”
Mrs. Bhooshan was surprised and congratulated on her selection in a Zoom call with education leaders from throughout the state: ISBE Officer Dr. Ernesto Matias; ISBE Director of Internal Communications Megan Griffin; ISBE Illinois Teacher of the Year/Those Who Excel Coordinator Jeff Seiler; President of The Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of School Mark Klaisner; Director of Communications West 40 School District Angela Mooney; Principal of Collinsville Middle School (formerly Principal of Webster Elementary) Brad Snow; Maryville Elementary Principal Carmen Loemker; Collinsville CUSD 10 Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich; and Madison County ROE 41 Regional Superintendent Robert Werden.
Jennifer Bhooshan reacted to the announcement by saying, “This honor is such a privilege. Thank you! It is my joy to teach. I love the kids and I love teaching them. They are brilliant and wonderful. They inspire me every day.”
The Illinois Teacher of the Year serves as an Ambassador for Teaching and may conduct workshops and speak to education and civic organizations. Regional Teachers of the Year are asked to serve in the same capacity within their region. Illinois Teachers of the Year are honored at the annual Teacher of the Year/Those Who Excel banquet each October in Springfield, IL, however, this year due to COVID-19 restrictions, the event is canceled. Plans to recognize them will be announced by ISBE.
ISBE has eight designated regions. The Southwest Region includes Calhoun, Greene, Jersey, Macoupin, Christian, Montgomery, Effingham, Fayette, Bond, Madison, St. Clair, Monroe and Randolph counties.

COLLABORATIVE PERFORMANCE AT COLLINSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL
9 January, 2020
Since 2009, the Arts and Education Council has managed the Maritz Arts and Education Fund for Teachers, which has awarded 102 grants totaling $255,000 since its inception. These funds are given directly to teachers for art education projects in their classrooms. This past fall, 14 area schools were awarded grants to support projects during the 2019-2020 academic year. In the past 10 years, more than 15,000 K-12 students have benefited from this grant program.
In December, a Maritz Arts and Education Fund for Teachers grant made it possible for Life Skills students at Collinsville High School to perform in the school’s annual Madrigal Concert for the first time. These students’ physical and educational needs require specialized learning that often makes participating in activities with fellow students difficult. The grant was used for costumes and bells for Life Skills students that made it possible for the students to perform.
The Life Skills students began preparing for the concert at the beginning of the school year. They learned to play the colored bells with coordinating color cards their teacher displayed. For the event, the students also created medieval decorations. The bells will continue to be a part of the curriculum for the Life Skills students. Music is an excellent tool to enhance the students’ learning especially as many of them learn best through repetition.
Their performance was a crowd favorite during the concert. After their first song, the audience stood up with enthusiastic cheers and applause. A trumpeter eventually played another fanfare to finally get the audience quieted down so they could perform their next song. The arts provided a bridge for the Life Skills students to participate in a meaningful activity with their classmates that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.
Your gift to the Arts and Education Council furthers our ability to invest in arts education projects that make the St. Louis region a more vibrant arts community for all.

]]>The Collinsville High School Band had a once-in-a-lifetime experience traveling to play in Carnegie Hall in New York City. Band Director Robert Wright shared the following with CHS staff:
“The trip started with student leaders helping and supporting younger students to gather and check all of their instruments, luggage and uniforms. We then began our journey, which was quickly met with some serious snow.
We were forced to stop in Pennsylvania where we had to separate the group into two different hotels which were 30 minutes apart. Obviously this was extremely frightening for myself and [Assistant Band Director] Ryan Stack, but when we left, the hotel clerks said that they had received multiple compliments from other guests that the students were absolutely wonderful, and they asked that we visit them again soon.
The following day we arrived in New York City and took in as much as we could. Students were able to go through the 9/11 museum and memorial, which was very awe inspiring. We also took a dinner cruise around the city and statue of Liberty before heading back to the hotel.
Friday was our big day. The group started off with a clinic from Nicholas Armstrong who is the Artistic Director for the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra. He was highly impressed by our students’ playing abilities, as well as their rehearsal etiquette. He left the clinic by saying, “New Yorkers can be very snotty when it comes to music, but I think you guys will blow them away.”
After the rehearsal, we headed into the city for lunch and sound check at Carnegie. Upon entering the auditorium the students were awe-struck. It was absolutely beautiful, and their playing reflected their emotions of pride for our school.
After dinner was our performance, and it was spectacular. We played for a very large audience, which received us very well. After the performance the audience gave us a standing ovation with no shortage of cheers.
For our final day of the trip, the group went up in the new One World Observatory (the new World Trade Center) for some fantastic views.
They also were able to take part in a lunch with Broadway stars to ask what it takes to make it in the Big Apple. Students were then able to spend some free time with chaperones in the city for shopping and sight-seeing.
We wrapped up the evening with the new Broadway hit musical SpongeBob SquarePants. As you can imagine the students loved it, and the cast was phenomenal. After the performance we departed for home. We arrived at 6:00 p.m.on Sunday evening.
I wanted to share all of this with you because we could not have done this without your support. Please know that it certainly does not go unnoticed by the staff/personnel. Throughout this trip we were complimented on student behavior, the students performance (many couldn’t believe the caliber of our playing), and our overall composure.
Thank you for all you do for our students! I am certainly proud to be a Kahok!”

ZacharyBodnar, a Collinsville High School senior, represented CHS in the Bass I Section of the Illinois Music Educators Association (ILMEA) All-State Chorus at the Illinois Music Education Conference, January 23-29, 2018 in Peoria, IL.
According to Lisa Cleveland, CHS Vocal Music teacher, 25,000 music students from across the state auditioned for an opportunity to perform in state band and choir ensembles. Fifteen-hundred students were chosen. Five CHS junior and senior vocal music students advanced to district, but only Zach prevailed all the way to the All-State Chorus performance.
“That is quite an honor!” said Mrs. Cleveland.
Zach said the experience was a little intimidating upon arrival at the conference because he did not know anyone in his ensemble. However, his nerves were quickly calmed because, “I enjoy getting to share the gift of music with others. Through music, you gain so much and get to meet people.”
Zach is considering offers from several colleges for the fall. He plans to major in music education and Spanish.
ILMEA “exists to advocate for universal access to comprehensive music education; deliver exemplary professional development for educators; and provide outstanding musical experiences for all Illinois learners facilitated by licensed music educators.”
While the students spent two days rehearsing for their Saturday performance, their accompanying music educators attended a professional conference. Over 10,000 people participate in the annual IMEC conference.
