I’m excited and honored to recognize Mrs. Rachel Whitener as Kreitner’s Kahok Educator of the Month award recipient for December. Rachel is an enthusiastic, dedicated educator who builds strong relationships with her students, sets high learning and behavioral expectations, and models a learning mindset in her classroom as well as throughout the school community.

Mrs. Whitener develops creative, engaging lessons that draw her students in and help them develop solid grade-level skills and grasp difficult concepts. I recently observed a lesson wherein her students took turns being the teacher for 3-digit division. Her consistency and effectiveness with her students shone through as these students guided their classmates through the steps AND even provided prompts and positive reinforcement to their classmates. Clearly, her students were demonstrating what Mrs. Whitener models for them each day. Her students mirror into the amazing work she does every day.

It is my pleasure to select Holly Blakeburn as Webster’s October Educator of the Month. Hiring Holly as an Educational Assistant three years ago is one of the best decisions I have made as an administrator.

From serving as Webster’s PTO President to performing any and all duties asked of her, she consistently goes above and beyond helping whenever and wherever. She often volunteers her time and abilities without even being asked. She arrives at school first thing in the morning to prepare for the day and is continuously seen after school helping both students and staff with whatever task is at hand. August 2023 – Julian Connor, educational assistant at Twin Echo Elementary, was honored with the Superintendent’s Quality & Excellence Award on August 15, 2023 during the Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 staff welcome back event at Collinsville High School.

The award is presented annually by the district superintendent in two categories: certified staff and non-certified staff.  Individuals are nominated by district colleagues and chosen by Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich based on their merits and accomplishments. Connor was honored in the non-certified staff category.

Criteria for the Superintendent’s Quality & Excellence award include: rapport with students; relationship with peers; professionalism; classroom activities and use of content knowledge (certified staff); going above and beyond in their profession; and community involvement.

Mr. Julian was nominated by Twin Echo Principal Dr. Julie Haake and teacher Michelle Theis.  His nomination included:

Mr. Julian brings the fun to our school. His day starts with music and dancing as students arrive at school. When students are having a tough day (for whatever reason), it is most often Mr. Julian that can help them turn things around. Whether it’s cracking a joke, sitting for a private heart-to-heart conversation, or just a pep talk, it’s typically Mr. Julian to the rescue. He is one of the most sought out staff members. When teachers have a student that is struggling, they always look to Mr. Julian. He has developed positive relationships with every student at Twin Echo and is always willing to assist teachers with difficult students.

On a non-work day for Mr. Julian, I contacted him about a student with severe anxiety about starting kindergarten. Knowing the student was a big fan of Spiderman and knowing Mr. Julian had a Spiderman costume, I texted him to see if he would wear it the first day of school. Within minutes, Mr. Julian – aka Spiderman – was there and the student was immediately drawn to him and touring his classroom with a smile on his face. This is just one example of Mr. Julian doing “whatever it takes” for students.

Mr. Julian is reliable and dependable. He is always prepared and ready for anything and everything! He offers to help others any time that he can. If a teacher forgot something in the office, Mr. Julian runs and gets it. If a teacher needs someone to supervise the class for a minute, he quickly takes over. If we are short staffed and need help – enter Mr. Julian. He is truly a jack of all trades and will do anything for anyone.

He respects the privacy of the students and families and when necessary, keeps information private and confidential. As the site supervisor of our before and after school program, he has parent contact with many of our families. At all times, he remains professional in these interactions and is well liked by all. The past two years he has been a member of the Polar Plunge team and has raised money for the Special Olympics. In addition, he publicizes the event, resulting in students and families coming to cheer him on!

2023 IL PTA Teacher of the Year Dana AndrewsApril 24, 2023 – Twin Echo Elementary teacher Dana Andrews was honored as the 2023 Illinois PTA Outstanding Teacher of the Year at the Illinois PTA Convention Award Celebration on April 22.

Dana Andrews demonstrates qualities that stood out to the selection committee:

  • Mrs. Andrews is a teacher at Twin Echo and is also a member of the PTA Executive Board. Her involvement with both has allowed her to be a liaison between the PTA and the school.
  • Mrs. Andrews is an outstanding teacher. She cares about her students as individuals, and she goes above and beyond to communicate with parents. Not only does she keep parents informed about the everyday activities in the school/classroom, she takes additional time to communicate with parents about their individual child.
  • Mrs. Andrews excels as an educator. Her knowledge of the curriculum and student learning has resulted in her student growth being one of the highest in the school district.
Watch Mrs. Andrews Learn She’s the 2023 Illinois PTA Outstanding Teacher of the Year

Mrs. Andrews was nominated by Twin Echo PTA President Sara Evers and Principal Dr. Julie Haake.

Twin Echo Principal Dr. Haake wrote:

Mrs. Andrews greets all students (families and colleagues) with her contagious smile. Her love for her students is evident in her everyday interactions. She is always cheerful, positive and sharing hugs when walking down the hallway. Her kind nature and warm personality have students gravitating towards her when they see her. Mrs. Andrews understands the importance of relationship building and always takes the time to listen to individuals.

This year Mrs. Andrews has had a couple of students with morning anxiety. Mrs. Andrews has worked with each of the parents to develop a morning plan to support those students and their individual needs. She has met students at the front door with a smile and a hug. When necessary, she went out to a car in the parking lot and calmly and patiently spoke with her student until she was ready to enter the school building.

Mrs. Andrews opens her classroom up to those students prior to the start of the day in order to make them feel welcome and comfortable. If a student eats breakfast at school, Mrs. Andrews has invited them to bring their breakfast to the classroom prior to the start of the day. Her willingness to work with each family on the child’s individual needs has helped decrease the anxiety these students were experiencing in the morning.

In addition to supporting her student’s social emotional needs and development, Mrs. Andrews designs her instruction to meet the needs of individual students. She uses frequent assessments to design instruction that fosters individual growth for all students. Instruction in her classroom is individualized and engaging. Her test scores rank among the highest in our district.

Twin Echo PTA President Sara Evers wrote:

As the President of our PTA, I am fortunate enough to have one of my children in Mrs. Andrews class, and I can tell you about how great of a teacher she is firsthand.

Every week in each student’s folder, there is a communication log. This log goes back and forth each school day. The student, parent and teacher are all encouraged to write in it daily, whether that is for questions, comments, or praises for that day. There is a weekly schedule on the communication log with that current week’s list of events, plans and weekly reminders.

In addition to the log, Mrs. Andrews posts daily on our classroom app. These posts include pictures of the classroom activities, updates on your student, and what they are currently learning as a class. Each week she messages parents individually to update us on our student and what we can be ready to learn in the future. The classroom app is also utilized to plan and request for upcoming classroom events.

Mrs. Andrews is very organized, prepared and plans ahead. She informs parents of possible snow days and sends the students home with “e-learning/snow day” packets, before the snow is even here! She gives the students “challenge” homework, which is fun and enriching. Parents are encouraged to sign their homework and the student turns it in for a special treat. She has tailored each student’s homework to fit exactly where they are academically.

As a parent with a child that requires special needs medically, Mrs. Andrews has gone above and beyond to take care of my son while he is at school. She eases my anxiety while I am not with my son because I know my child is in great hands.

She makes him feel comfortable and he knows he is safe with her. She herself has a son with type 1 diabetes, so she knows exactly what signs to look for and is ready to help him, however that may be, whether it is with fast-acting sugar, extra patience while he is cooperating, a dark quiet place to rest or even little pep talks about blood sugar tests. She always lets me know as soon as there is a problem and even checks his glucose meter a few times a day. On days when he goes home or is absent, I will receive a message or call from her checking up on him that day even in the evening or weekend. We have many conversations over our kids’ medical concerns. Not only does she educate my son, but she also educates me!

Congratulations Mrs. Andrews!

Jason Rehg and Jennifer KingMarch 9, 2023 – Caseyville Elementary primary educational assistant Jennifer King was recognized today as February 2023 Kahok Educator of the Month. The award was presented by Caseyville Principal Chelsea Clark and Benjamin F. Edwards Representative Jason Rehg.

In her nomination of Jennifer King, Mrs. Clark wrote:

Mrs. King has been an instrumental addition to our kindergarten hallway and school family the past two years.  Her ability to take initiative, help wherever is needed and build relationships with students does not go unnoticed.  There are no words to express our daily appreciation for what she does at Caseyville Elementary.

The Caseyville kindergarten teachers shared “Things We Love About Mrs. King”:

Warm:  She is kind and patient when helping students.  Her soft voice and clam nature puts others at ease right away.

Generous:  She gives every minute to the students, sometimes even giving up her lunch to help students who are having a hard time.  She also jumps in at the last minute to substitute on days we run out of substitute teachers.

Supportive:  She is always helpful with both the students and staff.  She is a great listener and is great team member to be on your side in a crisis, or when we are celebrating.

Talent:  She can sing, play instruments and entertain children of all ages.

Grace:  She has empathy for struggling children and always approaches problems with no judgement, only help.

Sense of Humor: She gets joy out of those little silly things and she is fun to laugh with.

Wisdom:  As an experienced teacher, as well as a mother,  she has great advice and is helpful to problem solve with.

February 10, 2023 – Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 is proud to announce three members of the Kahok Family are being recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education 2023 Those Who Excel program.

Collinsville High School assistant principal Charlotte Fisher, Collinsville Middle School library/media specialist Michael Hayman and Maryville Elementary special education teacher Jessica May are among 490 educators from across the state ISBE has chosen to honor for “…significant contributions to our state’s public and nonpublic elementary and secondary schools.”

The annual ISBE Those Who Excel & Teacher of the Year Awards celebrate “incredible classroom teachers, administrators, teams, volunteers and school support personnel who have made lasting impacts on the students, families and fellow educators in their school communities.”

“Illinois educators get up every day and perform one of the most difficult jobs in our state—and these excellent teachers, volunteers and administrators honored by ISBE went above and beyond that already exceptional call to serve,” said Governor JB Pritzker, “I’m thrilled to recognize teachers alongside librarians, custodians, volunteers and other support personnel who all contribute to our students’ wellbeing. Just like Illinois as a whole, it takes many skills and roles to keep a school running and to build the next generation of outstanding Illinoisans. Congratulations to the honorees and on behalf of the State of Illinois, thank you for your service.”

Collinsville CUSD 10 Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich said:  “On behalf of our entire district we would like to congratulate Charlotte, Jessica and Michael on their recognition and thank them for their dedication to our students, district and communities.  We are fortunate to have a great staff throughout our district and these three are shining examples.”

Charlotte Fisher, Assistant Principal, Collinsville High School
Meritorious Service, Administrator

CHS Asst Principal Charlotte Fischer 2023Charlotte Fisher joined the Kahok Family in 2008. CHS Principal Daniel Toberman appreciates the many contributions she makes as an assistant principal by supporting both students and staff: “Charlotte is a mentor for all staff including first-year teachers and young administrators. She works closely with special education students to ensure equity, has led an anti-bullying initiative and leads school restorative practice efforts.”

“My life’s passion is teaching and learning; especially for students with disadvantages,” Fisher says, “I began my career as a special education teacher. As a special education teacher, each day presented a new challenge. Yet, I enjoyed learning, listening, and growing.”

Ms. Fisher values her transition from teacher to administrator.  “Although I was not sold on leaving the classroom, I was prepared to lead. My leadership position allows me to support colleagues, teachers, students and families from a different platform. I am not one for the spotlight. My focus will always be on the work needed in our communities and schools for students,” she says.

She adds: “I am a leader who strives to provide structure, empathy, and support for all students. There is no substitute for good educational leaders. The most rewarding experience any educator can receive is witnessing the moment when a student truly gets it and begins to love learning or have hope for their future. Students respect educators who are consistent in their approach. My approach is to consistently put students in the best position to succeed.

“No matter the position, we are in the educational community together and each of us has the ability to make a difference. I am thankful for the recognition, but making a difference is my reward.”

Michael Hayman, Library/Media Specialist, Collinsville Middle School
Excellence, Student Support Personnel

CMS library Media Specialist Michael Hayman 2023Michael Hayman was a classroom teacher before joining Collinsville CUSD 10 in 2005 as a library/media specialist at Collinsville Middle School. He has made the Collinsville Middle School library/media center the hub of the school, a think-tank for creative students and a refuge for students looking for a place to fit-in.

Mr. Hayman’s library is not the quiet place people expect.  He finds quirky ways to connect with middle schoolers; making TikTok videos for and with them; having musical instruments accessible in the library to encourage song writing and playing; and collaborating with a parent to host a foosball tournament. He looks for ways to buy used books and fun things to do in the library. He showcases photos and mementos from his own youth to show kids he was once like them.

“The vision and mission of my middle school library/media center is not a warehouse of artifacts, but a cognitive playground for the community we empower.  It is an environment of opportunity for students, teachers, staff and parents to explore, discover, connect, experiment, research and create content.  I have a front row seat to collaborate, observe and have fun making memories,” Hayman says.

“‘The less I talk, the more they learn’ is the phrase that describes me most as a teacher,” Hayman adds, “Students must put forth the majority of thought and effort, learn to learn for themselves, be self-sufficient, a self-starter and a problem solver.  Everyone learns through creating, self reflection, and troubleshooting identifiable areas for improvement.”

“Mr. Hayman goes above and beyond to share his knowledge and creativity with the students, staff and our district public relations efforts,” CUSD 10 Superintendent Dr. Skertich said, “He created a website for our libraries that is used district-wide by students and their families. He supports his colleagues by researching and sharing online resources, digital books and databases. He takes the initiative to recognize areas of need and find new ways to encourage learning.”

Hayman noticed reading in the district had declined since the pandemic began in 2020.  He worked with teachers, administrators and CMS’ speech language pathologist to develop the prototype for a reading incentive program that is currently being piloted at the middle school.

This year, he also partnered with the Collinsville Daily News to develop a published outlet for student writing, video and audio projects. The section titled “Perspectives” amplifies student voices and offers recognition for a multitude of student creative endeavors.

“No matter the background, no matter the ability, everyone is capable of creativity and effort, but opportunity and empowerment must be given for multiple pathways to success, social connections, exploration, emotional support and correction,” says Mr. Hayman.

Collinsville CUSD 10 Public Relations Liaison Kimberly Collins works with Hayman on videos and creative projects for the district.  She said, “Mr. Hayman is a force in our district who puts students first, and focuses on both learning and social/emotional development. The key to his success is that the kids have so much fun, they don’t realize how they benefit in other important ways.”

Jessica May, Special Education Teacher, Maryville Elementary
Special Recognition, Teacher

Maryville Elementary Teacher Jessica May 2023Jessica May has been a special education teacher at Maryville Elementary School since 2005. During her tenure, she has worked successfully as both a resource teacher and co-teacher.

Maryville Principal Carmen Loemker said, “Through the years, Mrs. May has managed countless challenging students and parents.  She has been able to assure parents that their child’s IEP is implemented with integrity and fidelity. Recently, one parent of a student that moved in from a private school stated that she has never had her child cared for the way Mrs. May cares for and manages her child.

“Mrs. May manages to provide a calm and peaceful learning environment even with challenging student behavior. She uses individual incentives, has students involved in tracking their own academic success, work completion, and positive choices.  Students remain engaged and complete work for her that were unable to do so in other classes. The students and staff of Maryville Elementary are truly fortunate to work with Mrs. May.”

ISBE received a record number of nominations and applications for the 2023 Those Who Excel & Teacher of the Year Awards. A committee of administrators, teachers, educational service personnel, student support personnel and past Illinois Teachers of the Year selected this year’s awardees. ISBE will celebrate the awardees at a banquet on April 29.

Group photo from Caseyville groundbreaking Jan 5 2023January 5, 2023 – Collinsville Community Unit School District #10, Caseyville Public Library District, FGM Architects and Holland Construction representatives gathered for a ceremonial groundbreaking to mark the beginning of construction for a new Caseyville Elementary School.

“We are excited to see the construction of a new Caseyville Elementary begin and look forward to the positive impact the facility will have on our students, staff and community for years to come. This endeavor has taken a team effort to get where we are today and we are grateful for the work put forth by our board of education, district staff, and our partners at FGM and Holland,” said CUSD 10 Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich.

The new Caseyville Elementary will be built directly behind the current building and face Second Street. When the new school is complete, the existing school building will be razed to become parking and green space.

The new school’s design provides an ADA compliant state-of-the-art learning environment with larger classrooms, adequate space for support services, a modern gym/cafeteria, dedicated conference room, improved restrooms and better air quality.  In addition, organized pick-up and drop-off areas for cars and buses will improve traffic flow around the school during peak times.

The lobby will feature a large mural utilizing images of Caseyville students and positive messages shared in both English and Spanish. The goal is to reflect the spirit of the community and school district.

The plans also include an all new Caseyville Public Library building to be constructed alongside the elementary school. The side-by-side structures represent a partnership between the school district and the Caseyville Public Library District to better serve the Caseyville community.

The existing Caseyville Elementary, located at 433 S. Second Street in Caseyville, was built in 1935, with additions added in 1948 and 1951-61. The property covers four acres and has 20 classrooms. Recent demographic trends and essential infrastructure updates needed to make the school compliant with modern day learning led Collinsville CUSD 10 leadership to explore options to finance and construct a new school building.

The current library, built in 1998, sits just outside the existing Caseyville Elementary grounds on Second Street. There has been an ongoing natural partnership between the two entities for years, but once CUSD 10 started looking at ways to utilize the land under and around the school to create a new campus, the location of the library became a key factor.

The school district acquired the library property through an intergovernmental agreement. Following the official deed transfer in January 2022, part of the IGA between the district and library is a long term lease arrangement for the use of the current building and the new facility.

The new Caseyville Elementary School campus will be built using local and grant funding. The projected cost is $20 million. Work on the construction site commenced in late December 2022 and is expected to take 18 months to complete. FGM Architects designed the campus. Holland Construction serves as the construction manager.

The undertaking to build a new Caseyville school from the ground up is the first project of its kind in Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 since Collinsville Middle School was constructed in 2003.

“This opportunity for the students, staff and Caseyville community is not only a privilege, but an unwavering demonstration of support from our district administration and board of education,” said Caseyville Principal Chelsea Clark, “Their dedication to make this a reality and bring our dreams and needs to fruition is greatly appreciated by all. I am excited to see the transformation of Caseyville Elementary School today, and the future possibilities that it will provide our students and staff for years to come.”

December 14,  2022 – Collinsville Charities for Children provided more than 400 new pairs of shoes and socks to Collinsville CUSD 10 elementary and intermediate school students today during their annual shoe distribution event.

Elementary school students were taken by bus to Collinsville High School where they were given the opportunity to pick out shoes and socks, and have a quick visit with Santa Claus.  One-hundred-thirty Dorris Intermediate School students went to their school’s gym to chose their new shoes and socks. This was the first year the program expanded to include DIS.

Shoe Carnival in Edwardsville works with Collinsville Charities for Children to offer a wide selection of shoes in various sizes.   This year, socks were donated to collection points throughout the community, as well as purchased by the Charities for Children organization.

Volunteers from the charity, students from the Collinsville High School Leadership 101 class and several administrators from CUSD 10 helped fit the children with shoes.

Funding for the shoe distribution program is raised through donations and the Collinsville Charities for Children’s Annual Golf Event held on the first Friday in June at Belk Park.  In addition, Collinsville Charities for Children was a beneficiary of the 2022 Collinsville Festival of Trees.

This Christmas season, Collinsville Charities for Children also provided gifts for eight local children in need.

Collinsville Charities for Children exists for the purpose of assisting children in CUSD 10.  For information about their work and how to support their efforts, contact them via email: collinsvillecharitiesforchildren@yahoo.com

November 17, 2022 – Employees from Stifel St. Louis, in partnership with Operation Warm, delivered new coats to the student bodies of Kreitner and Caseyville Elementary Schools on November 15 and 17, 2022.

Stifel has partnered with Operation Warm since 2018 to provide brand new coats to children in need. Operation Warm, a national nonprofit that manufactures their own coats, is funded by corporate, community and government partnerships; in addition to donations from grants, foundations, groups and individuals.

Kevin Ortmeyer, Stifel’s Managing Director, said, “Stifel associates giving warm new coats to the children of the Collinsville School District sends a message to these deserving children that we care about them and want to make sure they have a proper winter coat for school and play. The Operation Warm Coat Drive is one of the most fun things we get to do all year.”

More than 650 coats were distributed to the Kreitner and Caseyville students. Teachers and principals collected sizes in advance. During their visit to the schools, Stifel employees met and fit the students with coats. Kreitner and Caseyville, both Title I schools, were chosen for the program based on their percentage of low income students.

Kreitner Elementary School and Caseyville Elementary School include students from Pre-Kindergarten through fourth grade.

Photos from Oct 20 2022 Mobile Dairy Classroom to KreitnerOctober 20, 2022 – Kreitner Elementary secured a spot on a mobile tour designed to show milk’s journey from cow to carton. Thanks to St. Louis District Dairy Council and Southwest/Southland Dairy Farmers, Kreitner students met Grace, a two-year-old Jersey cow, and experienced a Mobile Dairy Classroom right in the parking lot of their school.

Kreitner was chosen for the Mobile Dairy Classroom experience thanks to teacher Steffiny Sweet who entered a contest to win the visit. Over 300 schools entered and only 10 schools were chosen for a spot on the local tour.  Sweet’s school was eligible due to her class’ participation in the St. Louis District Dairy Council’s Adopt a Calf program.

We absolutely love learning about dairy cows and how they help produce things we use everyday!” says Sweet.

The Mobile Dairy Classroom, essentially a milking parlor on wheels, is designed to show milk’s journey from cow to carton.  The educational exhibit includes a presentation on dairy farms, cows and how farmers care for the environment. It also features the opportunity for students to learn about the modern milking process with the help of a special guest star – a real dairy cow. The 45-minute presentation, also covers how dairy foods fit into a healthy diet.

Kreitner students in second, third and fourth grades took part in the interactive program presented by real-life dairy farmer Richard Keel, associate general manager of the Southwest Dairy Museum and Education Center responsible for the Mobile Dairy Classroom program.  Mr. Keel was accompanied by Jim Hill, CEO and General Manager of Southwest Dairy Farmers.  As part of lesson, students learned about milking and got to see Grace milked by a machine.  Grace was a relaxed and happy participant who seemed to enjoy demonstrating for the students. She even mooed a few times and posed for photos!

October is National Farm to School Month.  The St. Louis District Dairy Council invited the 45-foot trailer housing the Mobile Dairy Classroom to appear at ten area schools to show agriculture in action.  According to SLDDC, just 2% of Americans are directly connected to the agriculture industry, and many students think milk comes from a grocery store. The Mobile Dairy Classroom aims to change that by opening their eyes to the real world of dairy and dairy farming.

“Field trips are an ideal way to show what happens on a dairy farm. But travel, budget and space restrictions can limit the adventure to only a handful of classrooms,” notes SLDDC registered dietitian Maggie Cimarolli, “By bringing the dairy farm directly to the students, the school has no transportation costs and can allow more students to participate.”

“Virtual farm tours became popular when schools turned to on-line learning,” says Cimarolli, “They remain an efficient way to show what life on a dairy farm is like. But there is no substitute for seeing a live cow being milked right in front of you!”

The Missouri schools on the SLDDC tour include: Gateway Elementary (St. Louis) St. Ambrose School (St. Louis), Fairview Elementary, (Columbia) and Russell Boulevard Elementary (Columbia). Illinois schools on the tour include: CA Henning Elementary (Troy), Lebanon Elementary (Lebanon), Ridgely Elementary (Springfield), Vachel Lindsay Elementary (Springfield), Kreitner Elementary (Collinsville), and Alhambra Elementary (Alhambra).

The most important takeaways from the day:  Milk provides 13 nutrients necessary for good health.  Have at least three servings of dairy every day!

September 26, 2022 – Webster Elementary teacher Ina Bowling was recognized today as September 2022 Kahok Educator of the Month. The award was presented by Edward Jones Financial Advisor Jason Rehg.

In her nomination of Ina Bowling, Webster Principal Mrs. Schumacher wrote:

It is my pleasure to select Ina Bowling as Kahok September Educator of the Month.  Although I have only worked with Mrs. Bowling for three years, It is evident that her love for children is and always will be of the utmost importance.

Ina Bowling radiates passion and a zest for learning that is reflective in her integration of the curriculum and her interpretation of what’s best for students.  Ina is always willing to do whatever it takes for students to succeed with both SEL and academic goals in mind.  She has taken the initiative to work alongside the district’s Diversity and Equity committee to provide curriculum that will intrigue and inspire her students.  She acknowledges their individuality and purposefully addresses their needs. Additionally, the norms and routines that she has established are evident whether she is present or not.

Ina is an active participant and team player. She is one of the first to volunteer to assist where needed.  She arrives at school first thing in the morning to prepare for the day and is continuously seen after school helping both students and staff with whatever task is at hand. She is the school PBIS coordinator and models what she preaches. Ina embraces challenges with optimism and dedication as she does not hesitate to adapt and innovate.

Mrs. Bowling is held in high regard by the education community.  Her strong work ethic, her ability to inspire others, and her commitment to the values of education make her more than deserving of this award.  Additionally, her positivity and sense of humor make her a colleague that everyone wants to be around.  I am truly fortunate to have Ina as a staff member at Webster Elementary.

September 15, 2022 – Over 400 third graders participated in the fun and learning at Collinsville CUSD 10 Third Grade STEM Day at Collinsville High School. The annual event is coordinated by the district’s Science Vertical Team and hosted by the CHS STEM Club.

Participants rotated through stations that offered hands-on experiences demonstrating Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) concepts.  The Science Vertical Team is composed of teachers representing all grade levels in the district from elementary through high school. Careful consideration is given to creating experiments and learning opportunities that are engaging and enlightening for the third graders.

Thirty-five CHS students from the STEM Club and Leadership Class volunteered for the event.  STEM Club members ran each station and Leadership students served as escorts for the classes as they traveled throughout the CHS auditorium, atrium and auxiliary gym. Elementary schools were split into two groups to attend either a morning or afternoon session.

Community partners representing Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC); SIUE Center for STEM Research, Education and Outreach; McKendree University; Army Corps of Engineers; Collinsville Area Vocational Center; Willoughby Heritage Farm; and Collinsville Memorial Public Library also provided staff and materials for special activities.

Each third grade teacher left the event with a “ready to go design and engineering project” to compete back in their classroom.  This year’s project, Marshmallow Blaster, involves construction of a simple machine that uses marshmallows to demonstrate the concept of forces.

Author Kerry Nenn Visits Twin Echo May 2022May 13, 2022 – Former Twin Echo Elementary student Kerry (Jones) Nenn (Collinsville High School Class of 1996) returned to the school today as a published author sharing her children’s book – “T-Rex in My Closet” – with current students.

Nenn was accompanied by Twin Echo Principal Dr. Julie Haake on visits to classrooms as part of the school’s “V.I.P.” day.  The theme-for-the-day was part of the school’s alphabetical countdown to the end of the school year….May 13 representing the letter “V”.  Dr. Haake shared yearbook photos of  young Kerry Nenn to show the students how the children’s book author was once just like them.

“T-Rex in My Closet” is Nenn’s first children’s book in her career as a full-time freelance writer and author.  She says the inspiration for the book was her two nephews’ love of dinosaurs.  Nenn collaborated with an illustrator to bring the book to life.  Learn more about her on her website: https://nennpen.com/.

In addition to reading her book to students, she talked about being a writer and encouraged them to create stories of their own. The students asked many questions and were very interested in talking about what they would do if they suspected a dinosaur was hiding in their rooms.

May 5, 2022 – During their May 4 meeting, the Village of Maryville Mayor and Board of Trustees recognized two CUSD 10 students as the 2022 Young Citizens of the Year:  Collinsville High School junior Adelyn Johnson and Maryville Elementary first grader Ally Grace Richter.

Maryville Community Improvement Board established the Young Citizens of the Year program is 2016 “…to recognize outstanding citizenship from the youth in our community, and to encourage students to take an active role in their communities, schools, and churches.”

The recipients were welcomed and congratulated by Maryville Mayor Craig Short.

Adelyn Johnson was nominated by Collinsville High School Counseling Department Chair Karen Olsen. Addy is the daughter of Andy and Adrienne Johnson. She is ranked at the top of her class, a varsity member of the CHS girls’ volleyball, soccer and track teams, president of the Class of 2023, member of National Honor Society and was chosen to represent CHS at the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy last year.

Counselor Karen Olsen wrote:

“Adelyn Johnson is an extraordinary young woman.  As her counselor, I have had the privilege and honor to know her for three years.  Her ever-ready smile, the thoughtfulness and care she gives to her decisions, her compassionate attitude towards others, and her humble “I Can Do” attitude are things I look forward to every time I see her.  I have been impressed by her intelligence, willingness to serve, character and inclination to go above and beyond, no matter the academic subject, sport or extracurricular activity.

Adelyn repeatedly strives to be the best in all areas of her life, not just academics.  She is a role model for all students.  Adelyn isn’t simply a member of clubs and organizations; she is a leader and organizer.  One thing that stands out to me in her involvement is that she saw a need in the school and didn’t just talk about it.  Instead she sought out resources and advocated for a new school club on mental health.  While it is still in the planning stages, she is the reason our school is now in the process of starting this organization, whose main purpose to increase awareness and decrease the stigma of mental health problems at CHS.”

Ally Richter was nominated by Maryville Elementary School teacher Brittany Evans  and Principal Carmen Loemker. She is the daughter of Paul and Lindsey Richter.

Teacher Brittany Evans wrote:

“Ally Richter is such a sweet and thoughtful girl. She is very kind to her peers and is always helping in any way that she can.  She helps keep other students on task when they are working in a group.  She offers to help the teacher with passing out and collecting papers, and doing other important jobs.  She often gives up her recess to clean up trash off of the playground without being asked.  Even more amazingly, she encourages others to help keep the playground clean.  In the classroom she helps clean and organize often.  I think it is really remarkable that she takes the initiative to make her classroom and school playground a better place.  She is a shining example of a good citizen at Maryville Elementary!”

Principal Carmen Loemker wrote:

“Ally has a wonderful attitude about school.  She never complains about hard work and sets a great example of positivity for other students.  She has attention to detail and willingly fixes and learns from mistakes to further her learning.  Her attitude is contagious and sets her apart from her peers.  We are every fortunate to have such a wonderful first grader!”

April 22, 2022 – In honor of Earth Day 2022, Ameren Illinois representatives came to Renfro Elementary to plant a tree with first graders as part of Save the Earth – Plant a Tree.

The children learned about digging safely to avoid accidentally hitting a utility line by calling 811 or contacting JULIE online before planting.  An Ameren representative told them about the benefits of trees for our earth’s environment and creatures.  The event was capped when students, wearing their hardhats, had the opportunity to put a handful of dirt at the base of “their tree” and help pat it down.

After the tree was planted, each student received a pair of garden gloves and a bracelet with native wildflower seeds to be planted.

Collinsville CUSD 10 Unveils Plans for New Caseyville Elementary School

Campus Features New Caseyville Public Library Onsite

Collinsville, IL – April 11, 2022 – Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 unveiled plans for a new Caseyville Elementary School to be completed in the 2023-24 school year.

The plans include an all new Caseyville Public Library building to be constructed alongside the elementary school.

Recent demographic trends and essential infrastructure updates needed to make the school compliant with modern day learning led Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 (CUSD 10) leadership to explore options to finance and construct a new school building.

New School Campus Result of Creative Intergovernmental Agreement

“We approached the library district about acquiring their land and proposed a partnership that would provide new, improved facilities for both entities.  Absent of the district and library working together to serve our communities, this would not have been possible,” said Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich.

The new Caseyville Elementary School campus will be built using local and grant funding. The projected cost is $19.2 million.

The school district acquired the library property through an intergovernmental agreement (IGA). Following the official deed transfer in January 2022, part of the IGA between the district and library is a long term lease arrangement for the use of the current building and the new facility scheduled to be completed in December of 2023.

“Our library has a wonderful working relationship with Collinsville CUSD 10. We’ve partnered on supply drives and distribution events, having Co-Op students work at the library, local libraries involved with school registration events and many other programs and services,” said Caseyville Public Library District Director Ashley Stewart, “Cooperation in this situation wasn’t a hurdle, but it could have been. Members of both boards understand the importance of lifelong learning and the continuity of service for students, staff, and families.”

The joint agreement allows the Caseyville Public Library District to focus their funds on expanding staff and programs, instead of building maintenance and upkeep. The library will gain 1,500 square feet, making it 50% larger than today’s location. The new facility will include a study room, meeting room to accommodate 25-30 people, a special children’s zone and interactive area, bilingual materials and signage, as well as dedicated outdoor space for the Caseyville Community Garden.

The new library building will be steps away from the school building.  Caseyville students will have exclusive access daily from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. before the library opens to the public. Being next door provides countless opportunities to utilize the library’s resources.

Elementary School is First Major Building Project in District Since 2003

The new Caseyville Elementary School and public library will be built directly behind the current buildings and face Second Street. The existing buildings will be razed and become parking lots and green space.  Construction is scheduled to begin in August 2022. FGM Architects designed the campus. Holland Construction Services is the general contractor.  Bids will be solicited beginning in early May 2022.

The school’s design provides an ADA compliant state-of-the-art learning environment with larger classrooms, adequate space for support services, a modern gym/cafeteria, dedicated conference room, improved restrooms and better air quality. In addition, organized pick-up and drop-off areas for cars and buses will improve traffic flow around the school during peak times.

The lobby will feature a large mural utilizing images of Caseyville students and positive messages shared in both English and Spanish. The goal is to reflect the spirit of the community and school district.

This undertaking to build a new school from the ground up is the first in Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 since Collinsville Middle School was constructed in 2003.

“The district is really excited about our partnership with the library.  The benefits to our students and community is something both the Board of Education and Library District Board are committed to for years to come,” said Dr. Skertich.

Caseyville Public Library District serves the Village of Caseyville, Illinois and surrounding communities. The mission of the Caseyville Public Library is to provide all members of the community with access to materials that will aid them in their educational and recreational endeavors.

Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 comprises 13 schools, serving 6,100+ students PreK-12 in Madison & St. Clair Counties in southwestern Illinois.
