]]>April 2, 2024 – Collinsville CUSD 10 is preparing for a real world learning opportunity on Monday, April 8, 2024: a total solar eclipse that passes across Illinois.
The district has provided ISO protective viewing glasses for students and staff. Schools are planning supervised activities with safety in mind. Parents should prepare their children to carefully follow instructions and wear the glasses properly.
Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing. Safe solar viewing glasses, or “eclipse glasses”, are not regular sunglasses.
Viewing any part of the bright Sun through a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will instantly cause severe eye injury.
For more information, visit: go.nasa.gov/EclipseSafety
Any K-6 parent or guardian who DOES NOT wish for their child to participate in the April 8th eclipse event, please fill out the information in THIS FORM by Friday, April 5th, 2024. Please complete a form for each child that WILL NOT participate.
If your child DOES have your permission to participate in the event, you do NOT have to fill out the form.
If you have questions about what your child’s class/school is planning for the eclipse, please contact the teacher or building principal.
For complete information and resources about the eclipse, visit the NASA Science website.

Ms. Cline has brought an excitement to the art class that has been missing for a number of years. Not only do students who enjoy art love her class, but those who are not art lovers leave her class with a different appreciation of the arts. She has students complete a variety of projects with many forms of media. Students are proud to see their projects displayed in the Commons Area and outside of the main office. Ms. Cline works with students who struggle and wants to see them succeed. Her door is always open to other teachers who want to learn from her. ]]>February 1, 2024 – Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 is asking all parents to complete the annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials survey by March 29, 2024. The survey is an opportunity for you to share your thoughts on important elements of school effectiveness. Please read the information below to learn more.
Kahok Families:
Now through March 29, 2023 parents, students and teachers across Illinois will have an opportunity to participate in the statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child’s school. As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school.
On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:
Prior research in more than 400 schools has shown that schools that were strong on at least three of these “5Essential” indicators were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains in math and reading than those that were weak on three or more Essentials.
All teachers and 4th through 12th grade students will also be responding to this survey. 5Essentials reports will be generated for schools if their teachers and/or students meet the response rate threshold of 50 percent. These reports will be sent to schools and districts in May 2024 and will also be included in the State School Report Card next fall.
Our district chose to provide the optional parent survey supplement. If at least 20 percent of parents complete this survey, a parent supplement report will also be generated. The parent data will NOT be reported on the State Report Card, but will be used as feedback for our schools and district.
Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be conducted now through March 29, 2024. To take the survey please use THIS LINK.
For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, visit: https://www.5-essentials.org/illinois. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact UChicago Impact Client Services at 1-866-440-1874 or impact-surveys@uchicago.edu.
Sincerely,
LaToya Berry-Coleman
Director of Curriculum and Assessment
What students, teachers and parents say about schools can serve as important indicators for school success.
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey provides a comprehensive picture of a school’s organizational culture in an individualized report measuring five “essentials” critical for school success:
The five factors of success are based on thirty years of research at the University of Chicago in more than 400 schools. Their findings indicate that schools that were strong on at least three of the 5Essentials were 10 times more likely to make substantial gains in improving student reading and math than schools that were weak.
The survey window opens January 29 and continues through March 29, 2024.
All district schools are required to participate in an annual school learning conditions survey. The surveys serve as an opportunity for schools to reflect on progress since the previous year.
Latoya Berry-Coleman, CUSD 10 Director of Curriculum and Assessment, underscores the importance of participation, “We use the 5 Essentials Survey feedback to set school improvement goals in the areas of leadership, instruction, and family engagement.”
The results factor into each school’s Summative Designation and Equity Journey Continuum, both of which are displayed on the Illinois Report Card.
Principals and superintendents will receive their 5Essentials Reports in May. Survey results will also be reported publicly on the UChicago Impact Reporting Website in June. School and district report cards are released on the State School Report Card website in the fall.

We would like to nominate Sarah Stone, special education teacher. She constantly goes above and beyond to make sure all kids are successful. Sarah will often rearrange her own schedule to meet the needs of students. She works alongside many general education teachers who value her opinion and depend on her. ]]>The post Proposal for CUSD 10 Schools is on March 19 Ballot appeared first on Collinsville Kahoks.
]]>The proposal will fund approximately $2.3 million annually in facility improvements and will not change the tax rate.
“Over the past year, we’ve conducted extensive evaluation of our district facilities with staff, architects and engineers to identify our most critical needs throughout our schools,” said CUSD 10 Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich. “We also sought feedback from our community members through the Kahoks Connect engagement program. Together, with the information from all groups, a plan to improve our schools without changing the tax rate was developed, and is now on the March ballot.”
The plan calls for the district to replace exterior and interior doors to improve safety; upgrade heating and cooling systems to improve efficiency; renovate facilities to allow students, staff and community members with disabilities to have independent access throughout our district; and update dated and worn school interiors to improve the learning environment. If approved, the work will be completed at each school over a seven-year time frame.
The funding path, chosen by the Board of Education, will not change the tax rate. The school board has proposed a financial strategy known as a tax transfer, which involves reallocating existing funds without raising overall taxes.
Under the proposed funding plan, CUSD will retire debt from the early 2000s to provide funding for an increase in the district’s Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Fund rate from 50 cents to 72 cents. The money previously used to pay off facility improvement debt would be redirected to the O&M Fund.
Skertich explains by implementing this funding plan, the district can leverage existing resources efficiently to address CUSD needed improvements. “This allows the district to invest more resources in critical facility needs without incurring new debt or paying additional interest, as the total tax rate remains unchanged. Money generated by this proposal will go directly to facility improvements. In total, nearly $35 million in improvements over the next seven years will be made to district facilities with zero change to the tax rate.”

]]>Click to read letter and resources in Spanish
Kahok Families,
The tragedy that occurred in Perry, Iowa, is devastating and there are no words to accurately express our sympathy for the loss of life and those injured, as well as their families and the community. Violence of this nature is a harsh reminder that safety must remain our number one priority and our district must be vigilant.
The safety and welfare of our students and staff is a top priority in our school district. Each year our safety protocols are reviewed and adapted, and new measures added. Changes and adjustments are the result of open lines of communication between law enforcement, first responders and district officials. These channels of communication allow for proper training, incident readiness and procedure changes to occur. Efforts to provide a safe learning environment are constantly evolving.
As we begin 2024, I want to remind families this is a difficult time of year as we unwind from the holidays, endure cold temperatures and look forward to spring. If you have a concern, observe a disturbing social media post or worry about an individual’s mental health, do not hesitate to communicate with school principals, staff or law enforcement. The goal is to always be proactive in helping others, and address potential risks before they arise. Our ability to look out for each other and avert a potential event is only as good as the information we get from families, students and community members. Your active involvement is a vital part of the district’s efforts to not only provide a safe environment for our schools, but to come to the aid of others.
We encourage you to call 911 if there is an imminent danger; and share non-emergency information with our principals, counselors, or local police by contacting the dispatch numbers for each community. (See attachment.)
I have also included resources to help you and your family discuss and process what occurred this past week.
Our Kahok community has always come together to stand with each other and support the needs of our school district. At this time, we must again rely on that strength to do our best for our community and our students.
Sincerely,
Mark B. Skertich Ed.D.

]]>The Hall of Fame was established in May 2022 “to recognize athletic and personal accomplishments, exemplary citizenship, contributions to society and actions that brought distinction and honor to all associated with Collinsville Community Unit School District #10.”
The 2024 group is the second to be enshrined in the Kahok Hall of Fame. Twenty-one individuals and teams were honored as the inaugural class last year.
Beginning in May 2023, nominations for the 2024 class of inductees were solicited from the public. In August, the eleven members of the Hall of Fame Selection Committee – four from the school district and seven representing the community at large – chose this year’s Kahok Hall of Fame inductees from a lengthy list of worthy individuals and teams.
To be eligible, a candidate must have graduated from Collinsville High School, worked for Collinsville CUSD #10 or be affiliated with the Collinsville CUSD #10 communities. Individuals inducted into the Hall of Fame must be at least 30 years of age prior to being inducted.
The Collinsville CUSD 10 Kahok Hall of Fame has two divisions:
“Our district is really excited to recognize our alumni, residents and employees for their community service, academic achievement, professional accomplishments, service to the district, athletic success and accomplishments,” said Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich.
“It was a challenge and an honor for the committee to review and select the Collinsville Kahok Hall of Fame Class of 2024,” added Skertich, “We are extremely proud of this year’s inductees and look forward to our community celebrating their accomplishments in February.”
The 2024 inductees will be celebrated February 15, 2024 at the Gateway Center in Collinsville, Illinois. Doors open at 5:00 p.m.; followed by dinner at 6:00 p.m. The inductee presentations begin at 6:45 p.m. The cost is $40 per person. Tables seating eight can be requested. Tickets for this event are limited and must be purchased in advance. Ticket sales end on February 1, 2024.

1965 Basketball Team (Athletic Achievement): The 1964-65 Kahok basketball season was supposed to be a “rebuilding year” after an upset loss in the super sectionals ended the 1963-64 season. However, everything came together that winter to bring home Collinsville High School’s second state basketball championship. Under the leadership of legendary Collinsville basketball coach Vergil Fletcher and assistant coach Frank Pitol, with grit and perseverance, as well as a historic command of Fletcher’s 1-2-2 “ball press” defense, the ‘65 team accrued a 30-2 season, 12-0 conference record, and state championship.
1986 Soccer Team (Athletic Achievement): The 1986-87 Kahoks capped an 18-5-2 season with Collinsville High School’s second boys soccer state championship. Collinsville beat Libertyville in the state tournament final match 2-1 in a nail-biter that included four overtimes.

I’m excited and honored to recognize Mrs. Rachel Whitener as Kreitner’s Kahok Educator of the Month award recipient for December. Rachel is an enthusiastic, dedicated educator who builds strong relationships with her students, sets high learning and behavioral expectations, and models a learning mindset in her classroom as well as throughout the school community.
Mrs. Whitener develops creative, engaging lessons that draw her students in and help them develop solid grade-level skills and grasp difficult concepts. I recently observed a lesson wherein her students took turns being the teacher for 3-digit division. Her consistency and effectiveness with her students shone through as these students guided their classmates through the steps AND even provided prompts and positive reinforcement to their classmates. Clearly, her students were demonstrating what Mrs. Whitener models for them each day. Her students mirror into the amazing work she does every day.
Benjamin F. Edwards Financial Advisor and Vice President/Investments Jason Rehg sponsors the award each month during the school year to recognize outstanding educators in Collinsville Community Unit School District #10.

Skertich and Collinsville High School social studies teacher Dakota Tostado were among the panelists invited by Advance Illinois to discuss “The State of Our Educator Pipeline” during an event hosted at the Gateway Center in Collinsville.
Advance Illinois is a Chicago-based “… independent policy and advocacy organization working towards a healthy public education system that prepares students to achieve success in college, career, and civic life.” The November 14 panel members were invited by Advance Illinois to discuss how teacher supply is impacting schools in southwestern Illinois communities.
The panel participants were:
Dr. Skertich and Dr. Williams are members of the Advance Illinois Advisory Group.
Steans opened the presentation by summarizing her organization’s recent report “The State of Our Educator Pipeline 2023: Strengths, Opportunities, and the Early Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic.” She highlighted specific data points and trends in the supply, recruitment and retention of both certified teachers and paraprofessional staff.
During the discussion, superintendents Dr. Skertich and Dr. Griffin talked about challenges their district’s face and what they are doing to address those challenges. ]]>Baumgartner will be recognized by the St. Louis Jewish Light later this month as one of their 2023 Unsung Heroes:
Unsung Heroes, which began in 2010, shines a light on individuals of any background or faith who generously volunteer or go above and beyond to help the St. Louis Jewish community, and Jewish St. Louisans who volunteer, either within the local Jewish community and/or the community at large. This year, two of the 11 Unsung Heroes are not Jewish; both are teachers, one in Jefferson County, the other in Collinsville, and both are going above and beyond in their efforts to stop antisemitism in their classrooms and in their communities.
Last school year, Baumgartner, who teaches sixth-grade at Dorris Intermediate School, heard one of her students say “Hitler is cool” and instruct two other boys to give the Nazi salute. Baumgartner, who is Catholic, took determined action to use the event as a teachable moment for her class. She used lessons to combat antisemitism, showed a YouTube interview with a Holocaust survivor and took her class on a field trip to the Holocaust Museum in St. Louis.
At the school board meeting, Baumgartner was introduced and congratulated by DIS Principal Kevin Stirnaman. She received a certificate signed by BOE President Gary Peccola and Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich.

]]>Collinsville Community Collaboration, C3, is a partnership between the City of Collinsville, Collinsville Chamber of Commerce and Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 to honor those who serve the community and make positive contributions to the quality of life. The first C3 awards were presented in 2018.
Elliott Schusky: 2023 Leader of Tomorrow Award Recipient
Collinsville High School senior Elliott Schusky was selected as the Leader of Tomorrow by C3.
The award honors youth who are “involved in the community of Collinsville in constructive and positive ways that have impacted the lives of others that reside here, and inspired others to make a difference through their actions.”
Schusky is ranked at the top of his graduating class, and was recently named a Commended Scholar in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. In addition to academics, he excels in band and other co-curricular activities. He’s principal chair for the horn section in the CHS Band, president of CHS Model United Nations, praetor of Latin Club, a member of Scholar Bowl, Math Team and Book Club.
A gifted musician, Elliott has been part of CHS Honors Band all four years (horn) and was recently selected for the Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) 2023 District Festivals Group. He is also a member of the Belleville Philharmonic (violin).
Schusky is very active in the CHS Latin Club. Has earned numerous awards at Illinois Junior Classical League competitions, earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Latin as a junior, and a silver medal on the National Latin Poetry Exam.
At Collinsville High School, Elliott has taken responsibility for the school’s participation in Model United Nations. Model UN is a place where high school students are “encouraged to immerse themselves in the politics, cultures, and problems of the 193 member nations.” Participants, serving as delegates representing different nations, write resolutions and learn to work together toward solutions for the world’s problems.
His Model UN involvement led to an internship with Civitas St. Louis, a not-for-profit organization that organizes programs to promote active citizenship and world awareness to students.
Schusky hopes to pursue a career as a foreign service officer. His goal is to one day work for the state department and serve in an embassy or consulate.
Elliott Schusky is the son of Mark Schusky and Barbara Lindauer of Collinsville.
Kyle Gordon: 2023 Stan Schaeffer Education Community Leadership Award Recipient
Collinsville High School social studies teacher Kyle Gordon was named the 2023 Stan Schaeffer Education Community Leadership Award recipient.
The Stan Schaeffer Education Community Leadership Award, named for former Collinsville mayor, the late Stan Schaeffer, honors Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 educators whose work has furthered education and helped create positive change within the Collinsville community.
Through the courses he teaches and co-curricular activities he coordinates, Kyle Gordon is shaping the Collinsville community’s future leaders. He joined the CHS staff in 1999. He currently teaches AP US History and Leadership 101.
Kyle Gordon created the Leadership 101 course at CHS and built the curriculum. Students learn group and individual leadership skills, and civic responsibility. They complete a class service learning project where they plan and execute a fundraising project for a charity.
Mr. Gordon is also the Collinsville High School Student Council advisor. CHS StuCo supports the greater Collinsville community by volunteering and presenting local events.
With more than 400 members, the CHS StuCo is the largest in the nation, and has been a National Council of Excellence for the past 18 years – every year since the award was created by the National Student Council.
CHS Student Council hosted the National Student Council Conference in June 2023. More than 1,000 delegates from all 50 states, and Canada and Australia attended.
Kyle Gordon coordinates projects enjoyed by the community, including CHS Homecoming activities and parade, as well as the popular Senior Citizen Prom. Under his direction each year, CHS StuCo collects Christmas gifts for the students at Kreitner Elementary and delivers them dressed as Santa, Mrs. Claus and elves.

]]>The post CUSD 10 Schools Earn Exemplary & Commendable 2023 Designations appeared first on Collinsville Kahoks.
]]>One component of the School Report Card is the summative designation – a descriptor of how well a school is meeting the needs of all students. This designation is based on academics, student success, school culture and climate, financial investments, overall data for all of the accountability indicators, and data for individual student groups.
This year, one Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 school is designated as Exemplary, eight schools are designated as Commendable, one is Targeted and one (Jefferson Elementary) does meet the size requirement to receive a designation. For a detailed description of the four ISBE designation categories, see: Annual Summative Designations.
Here are things to note about CUSD 10 schools’ 2023 Illinois Report Cards:
CUSD 10 schools’ Exemplary and Commendable status reflects investments the district has made in instructional staff, social emotional supports, STEM, early intervention programs and Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) to better meet the academic and social emotional needs of our students. CMS’ designation is not cause for alarm, but rather a time for reflection on the school’s strengths and weaknesses, and how changes can be implemented for better student outcomes in the identified subgroup.
Illinois Report Cards include metrics for Equity Journey Continuum. This is an informational tool to track progress toward closing gaps in student achievement, opportunities and support. Looking at these data points through the lens of equity makes it useful for improving outcomes for all students.
Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 holds high expectations for all students and believes every student can meet expectations with the right support. CUSD 10 teachers, administrators and staff, in partnership with the community, are continuing to focus on student academic and social emotional growth.
