The post CHS 2023-24 Faculty Member of the Month Recipients appeared first on Collinsville Kahoks.
]]>The September Faculty Member of the Month was nominated by two of her colleagues. They wrote, “She is one of the most patient people I have ever met. Her kindness, compassion and sensitivity are on display every single day both inside and outside of her classroom. She educates some of the most vulnerable students in this school and though it can be a challenge day to day, she does it with an open mind, open heart and with a smile on her face. She advocates for her students and makes sure that inclusion is just not a fancy educational term to throw around…she makes it happen.” Congratulations to Ms. Lynn Vermeiren – the September Faculty Member of the Month!
The October Faculty Member of the Month has called the library of CHS home for a few years now. Her nominators wrote, “She is usually the first point of contact for anyone entering the library. She is welcoming and offers help to anyone who walks in the door (staff or student). She fields a variety of questions/requests each day with a positive attitude and she is willing to see these situations through or direct them to the correct person. She creates displays/bulletin boards that promote character education, display positive messages and create a welcoming environment both in the library and around the building. She also designs and helps print posters for teachers around the building. She keeps things running smoothly by maintaining the copiers, printer, laminators and troubleshooting computer issues. She has a good balance of maintaining high standards and being an adult that students can feel comfortable confiding in.” For all of these reasons we proudly name Ms. Dianna Altenberger the October Faculty Member of the Month! Congratulations Dianna!
The November Faculty Member of the Month has been very busy over the course of the last two years working on a truly grand project that will better not only CHS, but our community as a whole. His dedicated and untiring work to bring together business leaders, politicians, community partners, staff and students to help literally build the future has been greatly appreciated and admired. For his work on making the new AVC center a reality, we proudly present Mr. Joe McGinnis with the November Faculty Member of the Month! Congratulations!
The CHS January Faculty Member of the Month has worn many hats while at CHS. In his current role, he is an amazing manager, organizer, planner and true team player. His nominators wrote, “Year after year, he puts on the greatest Basketball Tournament in the state, helps produce amazing athletes and scholars, works with countless community members and makes things run as smooth as they possibly can no matter if it is a sporting event, community event or co-curricular activity. He is a dedicated Kahok that believes in this school, this community and our kids.” For these reasons, we name Mr. Clay Smith the CHS January Faculty Member of the Month! Congratulations Coach Smith!
The March Faculty Member of the Month’s nominee wrote, “She has done a wonderful job building the Criminal Justice program in the CAVC and has dedicated so much time in the creation of activities and curriculum for that program. She also has worked tirelessly putting together the Criminal Justice Jamboree that so many students and teachers enjoyed on Friday. And her stewardship of the Kahok Closet benefits countless Kahoks each and every day.” For all of these reasons we name Mrs. Rachel Harlan the March Faculty Member of the Month!

]]>March 15, 2024 – Collinsville High School second-year social studies teacher Dakota Tostado was named the Illinois Education Association 2024 Bob Haisman Teacher of the Year during the organization’s annual Representative Assembly in Rosemont, Illinois, on Thursday, March 14, 2024.
The Bob Haisman Teacher of the Year recognizes a “new teacher” IEA member who has shown outstanding accomplishments in their involvement in the local, state, and/or national association; in their profession; in promoting public education; and in enhancement of the image of early career educators in the Association, the school or the community.
Tostado was nominated by Kathleen Cervera, IEA Early Career Chairperson, who wrote:
…Dakota is a second year social studies teacher at Collinsville High School in Collinsville, Illinois. As a first year teacher, Dakota became engaged with Association work. He embraces the work that his local, region, and the IEA have been doing to support public education, educators, and students…
Dakota is enthusiastic about the work that is being done at the local, regional, and state levels
of the association. He is also passionate about recruiting other early career educators to attend local and state events. Dakota’s ambition, positivity, enthusiasm, and emerging leadership makes him a qualified candidate for this award. I am excited to see the many things that Dakota will accomplish as he continues to be an active and engaged IEA member.
The Illinois Education Association, an affiliate of the National Education Association, is a union of more than 135,000 members composed of Illinois elementary and secondary teachers, higher education faculty and staff, educational support professionals, retired educators and college students preparing to become teachers. Their mission is to effect excellence and equity in public education and to be THE advocacy organization for all public education employees.

]]>All undergraduate students should file the FAFSA, even if they think they won’t qualify for financial aid. The FAFSA determines a student’s eligibility for need-based aid, including work-study options and the Federal Pell Grant, but it also gives access to federal parent and student loans.
The FAFSA usually goes live in October, however, a new streamlined version is being introduced for the 2024-25 school year. The release of the new form was pushed to December.
When the 2024-25 FAFSA opens, the application will be posted to: https://studentaid.gov/h/
If you are uncertain as to how to fill it out or want additional assistance, Collinsville High School will host a FAFSA Completion Night on January 10th from 6pm to 8pm in the CHS Library. The CHS Counselors and Financial Aid experts from local universities will be on hand to assist you in filling out the application and answering any questions.

The first C3 awards were presented in 2018.
Elliott Schusky: 2023 Leader of Tomorrow Award Recipient
Collinsville High School senior Elliott Schusky was selected as the Leader of Tomorrow by C3.
The award honors youth who are “involved in the community of Collinsville in constructive and positive ways that have impacted the lives of others that reside here, and inspired others to make a difference through their actions.”
Schusky is ranked at the top of his graduating class, and was recently named a Commended Scholar in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. In addition to academics, he excels in band and other co-curricular activities. He’s principal chair for the horn section in the CHS Band, president of CHS Model United Nations, praetor of Latin Club, a member of Scholar Bowl, Math Team and Book Club.
A gifted musician, Elliott has been part of CHS Honors Band all four years (horn) and was recently selected for the Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) 2023 District Festivals Group. He is also a member of the Belleville Philharmonic (violin).
Schusky is very active in the CHS Latin Club. Has earned numerous awards at Illinois Junior Classical League competitions, earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Latin as a junior, and a silver medal on the National Latin Poetry Exam.
At Collinsville High School, Elliott has taken responsibility for the school’s participation in Model United Nations. Model UN is a place where high school students are “encouraged to immerse themselves in the politics, cultures, and problems of the 193 member nations.” Participants, serving as delegates representing different nations, write resolutions and learn to work together toward solutions for the world’s problems.
His Model UN involvement led to an internship with Civitas St. Louis, a not-for-profit organization that organizes programs to promote active citizenship and world awareness to students.
Schusky hopes to pursue a career as a foreign service officer. His goal is to one day work for the state department and serve in an embassy or consulate.
Elliott Schusky is the son of Mark Schusky and Barbara Lindauer of Collinsville.
Kyle Gordon: 2023 Stan Schaeffer Education Community Leadership Award Recipient

The Stan Schaeffer Education Community Leadership Award, named for former Collinsville mayor, the late Stan Schaeffer, honors Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 educators whose work has furthered education and helped create positive change within the Collinsville community.
Through the courses he teaches and co-curricular activities he coordinates, Kyle Gordon is shaping the Collinsville community’s future leaders. He joined the CHS staff in 1999. He currently teaches AP US History and Leadership 101.
Kyle Gordon created the Leadership 101 course at CHS and built the curriculum. Students learn group and individual leadership skills, and civic responsibility. They complete a class service learning project where they plan and execute a fundraising project for a charity.
Mr. Gordon is also the Collinsville High School Student Council advisor. CHS StuCo supports the greater Collinsville community by volunteering and presenting local events.
With more than 400 members, the CHS StuCo is the largest in the nation, and has been a National Council of Excellence for the past 18 years – every year since the award was created by the National Student Council.
CHS Student Council hosted the National Student Council Conference in June 2023. More than 1,000 delegates from all 50 states, and Canada and Australia attended.
Kyle Gordon coordinates projects enjoyed by the community, including CHS Homecoming activities and parade, as well as the popular Senior Citizen Prom. ]]>The top 50,000 students who entered the 2024 competition by taking the Fall 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) earned Commended or Semifinalist status. The scholarship program determines semifinalists on a state-proportional system. Schusky is among 34,000 students from throughout the nation who were recognized with Commended status. His score placed him in the top 3-4% nationwide.
A letter of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®), which conducts the program, was sent to Collinsville High School for Schusky.
“Elliott’s recognition as a National Merit Scholar continues the tradition that has been established for academic excellence at Collinsville High School,” said CHS Principal Dr. Daniel Toberman, “His hard work and dedication are an example for everyone else in our school to follow. I could not be more proud of him or more honored to be associated with his accomplishment as a member of the Kahok family.”
Collinsville High School Counseling Department Chair Karen Olsen said of Elliott: “In the classroom he is an extremely thorough and responsible student. Elliott’s academic record is an accurate measure of his intellect and great potential. Elliott has never held back in his pursuit of academic excellence, always opting to take the hardest classes CHS has to offer, from AP Latin and AP Physics, to Honors Trig/Calculus A, and so much more. While most students are content taking the normal load of classes, Elliott elected to not waste an opportunity to learn, and was the only Junior to sign up for a zero-hour course risking his GPA in the process. Elliott’s love of learning and education to me is unparalleled.”
“Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”
In addition to his academic accomplishments, Elliott is active in CHS Band, Latin Club, Scholar Bowl, Model U.N., Math Team and Book Club.
Elliott hopes to pursue a career with the U.S. State Department and serve in an embassy or consulate.

]]>The post CHS Future Educators Begin Practicum in CUSD 10 Schools appeared first on Collinsville Kahoks.
]]>September 13, 2023 – Collinsville High School seniors enrolled in the Collinsville Area Vocational Center education practicum class began their first week of student teaching on September 11 at Collinsville Community Unit School District #10’s John A. Renfro Elementary and Kreitner Elementary schools.
CHS Seniors Julissa Arroyo, Alexia Clover, Christianne Corzine, Haley Fowler, Paulina Lopez-Barajas, Jaylene Ortiz and Natibida Rubalcava-Carreno have the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom and observe firsthand what it’s like to be a professional educator.
“These seniors will be spending approximately six hours weekly with teachers gracious enough to open up their classrooms for the experience,” said Shawn Geppert, the CAVC/CHS teacher responsible for the education program, “They will stay in those elementary classrooms through the end of October when they will switch to the preschool level, including placements at Webster Elementary until December. Second semester will be split between Dorris Intermediate School & Collinsville Middle School to have a wide range of experiences to incorporate into making the decision of what level they’d like to pursue in college.”
Participants perform tasks like creating bulletin boards, grading papers, working one-on-one with students who may be struggling with particular concepts, making copies, creating projects, and teaching/facilitating small group activities. At the completion of the course, they will have collected a portfolio of artifacts including behavior management ideas, lesson plans, reference letters and concepts to build their teaching philosophies.
The education practicum course is the capstone of specialized CAVC courses that introduce future teachers to the profession through classwork and student teaching opportunities. Through Early Childhood, Teaching as a Profession and Teaching Practicum classes, high school students can earn dual credit through Southwestern Illinois College and gain experience in lesson planning, teaching strategies and classroom management.
Because of their successful completion of the first year course, either Early Childhood Education or Teaching as a Profession, the practicum students have base knowledge of the education field and truly participate in an entry level student teaching experience.
“What makes this such a great opportunity for these seniors is not only learning to see things from a teacher’s perspective, but also experiencing various grade levels to help guide their career focus. Time in classrooms with children Pre-K to 8th grade, along with observations done in their high school classrooms, helps narrow what certification they want to pursue when enrolling in post secondary coursework,” said Geppert.
The proposal to expand CAVC education curriculum beyond early childhood and the in-house preschool they have operated for many years was approved by the Collinsville CUSD 10 board of education in 2021, and implemented in 2022-23 as part of the district’s Kahoks Teaching Kahok initiative.
Kahoks Teaching Kahoks is designed to grow a future teacher workforce. The program encourages current high school students to become educators by exposing them to career pathways in education and providing scholarship opportunities for those interested in returning to the Collinsville school district to teach.
“Although we recently expanded this opportunity, we have been placing students in various elementary schools across the district for the last 25 years,” added Geppert, “Administration and teachers across the district have been supportive and excited to open their classrooms for this learning experience. Our course content alone couldn’t possibly cover the variety they are gaining from the teaching practicum. The support of the district staff is key in the success of bringing these students back to our community to teach future Kahoks!”

]]>The CUSD 10 Student School Board Member provides a student voice on the board. The individual is selected annually from CHS seniors who apply to be considered for the position. They serve for one school year, attending regular monthly meetings of the Board of Education as a non-voting member.
Ben is president of the CHS Student Council and an active participant in Model U.N. He’s also part of the Collinsville Triad Maryville CEO entrepreneurship program, a member of National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Key Club, Spanish Club, Kahoks on the GO!, Saturday Scholars, cross country, Kahok Trap, and the CHS track team. In addition to his co-curricular activities, Ben is enrolled in AP courses and ranks in the top 3% of his graduating class.
Outside of school, Ben is accomplishing the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout rank by completing a project for Willoughby Farm in Collinsville. He is constructing five raised garden beds to accommodate people with physical challenges. Ben also works part-time at the Gateway Convention Center.
In his application, Ben wrote: “I would love to serve as the student school board member because as the student council president, I feel that these roles would work hand in hand with each other as they both take into account the best interests of the students. I grew up going to school within the CUSD 10 district as well and I would love to give back to our wonderful school district.”
“I enjoy working with others, as well as debating, as is shown by my interest in Model UN. Also politics have always been an interest of mine and this position would allow me to explore the world of politics as well as other areas of our local government a little further,” he added.
During his term, Ben would like to address the problem of vaping at school, improve club/activity choices for young students, and encourage physical activity in all grade levels.
“A student sees their school in a much different light than teachers or school board members,” says Ben, “Students experience the decisions that school administrators make. Allowing a student to provide their input allows those decisions to benefit the student body much more than one would think.”
Ben is the son of Benjamin and Maria Simpkins of Collinsville.

]]>The post Lindauer Receives 2023 Superintendent’s Award appeared first on Collinsville Kahoks.
]]>The award is presented annually by the district superintendent in two categories: certified staff and non-certified staff. Individuals are nominated by district colleagues and chosen by Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich based on their merits and accomplishments. Ms. Lindauer was honored in the certified staff category.
Criteria for the Superintendent’s Quality & Excellence award include: rapport with students; relationship with peers; professionalism; classroom activities and use of content knowledge (certified staff); going above and beyond in their profession; and community involvement.
Barbara Lindauer is continually striving to hold high standards for each Collinsville High School student. She provides endless opportunities for students to gain experiences to learn and grow as leaders. She accomplishes this through her involvement in a wide range of student-centered activities. She consistently utilizes hands-on activities to accompany content. Mrs. Lindauer is never someone’s teacher for one year, as she goes above and beyond to support students even after they are no longer in her class. Barbara IS the gift that keeps on giving.
Mrs. Lindauer consistently develops positive relationships and rapport with students throughout her lessons, and during passing periods, where she visits with students to talk about improving grades, after school clubs and activities, and what is going on in their lives outside of school. Barbara has sponsored and organized many events through the seven clubs she sponsors. And, she is always at those events to cheer on her students.
Mrs. Lindauer is quick to collaborate with her peers in a variety of ways. She leads her department as the social studies chairperson and serves as a building representative for the CEA. If a peer needs assistance, they know they will find it in Mrs. Lindauer.
Barbara Lindauer is a two-time Teacher of the Year recipient for the Collinsville Chamber of Commerce, a Fulbright Hays Scholar, the 2015-16 State of IL Smart/Maher VFW Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year, 2018 Patriot Service Award winner and was named a 2019-20 Teach Plus Illinois Rural Teacher Leader. Mrs. Lindauer models the importance of civic duty. Some examples of this include the memorial erected in front of CHS honoring veterans; engaging CHS students in an environmentally-conscious educational and leadership opportunity to plant trees in Fairmont City; and conducting a 9/11 ceremony that she began, lead, and has continued as a tradition at CHS.

In 2022, she completed her doctorate in educational leadership at SIUE with research focusing on classroom behavior management.
She spent 16 years in the Waterloo School District teaching fifth, third and second grades. For the last two years, she served as the principal of the Evansville Attendance Center in the Village of Evansville, a small, rural K-8 building.
“I have loved every minute of it, but was ready for a new challenge,” says Dr. Eugea of her decision to join the administration at CHS.
She enjoys being an educator, even on rough days. “There is something special about being a part of a student’s learning journey, seeing them grow and learn and become adults, that makes even the most challenging days worth it,” she says.
Her philosophy of education is rooted in what Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Dr. Eugea brings that mindset to her new role at CHS.
“What a powerful and immense responsibility,” she says, “I am ecstatic to be a part of that responsibility with you. Each student’s educational journey is unique, and I am excited to be a small part of it. Teamwork plays an essential role in the success of each student’s journey, and I look forward to working together.”
Dr. Eugea and her husband, Derek, live in Waterloo, Illinois, with their children Grant (17) and Makenah (14), and two fur babies: Amarok, a husky, and Winston, a French bulldog. Son Grant will be a senior and daughter Makenah will be a freshman at Waterloo High School. Both play soccer year-round, and tennis for WHS.
Eugea is a self-proclaimed “avid coffee drinker” who loves grilled cheese and cheese pizza. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, reading, hiking and cycling. She’s a lifelong learner and loves reading relevant research on best practices in education.
“I am excited about the opportunity to be a part of the high school education world; to learn, grow and serve at CHS; and most importantly, to be a part of the Kahok Family!” says Dr. Eugea.
