September 13, 2023 – Collinsville High School seniors enrolled in the Collinsville Area Vocational Center education practicum class began their first week of student teaching on September 11 at Collinsville Community Unit School District #10’s John A. Renfro Elementary and Kreitner Elementary schools.

CHS Seniors Julissa Arroyo, Alexia Clover, Christianne Corzine, Haley Fowler, Paulina Lopez-Barajas, Jaylene Ortiz and Natibida Rubalcava-Carreno have the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom and observe firsthand what it’s like to be a professional educator.

“These seniors will be spending approximately six hours weekly with teachers gracious enough to open up their classrooms for the experience,” said Shawn Geppert, the CAVC/CHS teacher responsible for the education program, “They will stay in those elementary classrooms through the end of October when they will switch to the preschool level, including placements at Webster Elementary until December. Second semester will be split between Dorris Intermediate School & Collinsville Middle School to have a wide range of experiences to incorporate into making the decision of what level they’d like to pursue in college.”

Participants perform tasks like creating bulletin boards, grading papers, working one-on-one with students who may be struggling with particular concepts, making copies, creating projects, and teaching/facilitating small group activities. At the completion of the course, they will have collected a portfolio of artifacts including behavior management ideas, lesson plans, reference letters and concepts to build their teaching philosophies.

The education practicum course is the capstone of specialized CAVC courses that introduce future teachers to the profession through classwork and student teaching opportunities. Through Early Childhood, Teaching as a Profession and Teaching Practicum classes, high school students can earn dual credit through Southwestern Illinois College and gain experience in lesson planning, teaching strategies and classroom management.

Because of their successful completion of the first year course, either Early Childhood Education or Teaching as a Profession, the practicum students have base knowledge of the education field and truly participate in an entry level student teaching experience.

“What makes this such a great opportunity for these seniors is not only learning to see things from a teacher’s perspective, but also experiencing various grade levels to help guide their career focus. Time in classrooms with children Pre-K to 8th grade, along with observations done in their high school classrooms, helps narrow what certification they want to pursue when enrolling in post secondary coursework,” said Geppert.

The proposal to expand CAVC education curriculum beyond early childhood and the in-house preschool they have operated for many years was approved by the Collinsville CUSD 10 board of education in 2021, and implemented in 2022-23 as part of the district’s Kahoks Teaching Kahok initiative.

Kahoks Teaching Kahoks is designed to grow a future teacher workforce. The program encourages current high school students to become educators by exposing them to career pathways in education and providing scholarship opportunities for those interested in returning to the Collinsville school district to teach.

“Although we recently expanded this opportunity, we have been placing students in various elementary schools across the district for the last 25 years,” added Geppert, “Administration and teachers across the district have been supportive and excited to open their classrooms for this learning experience. Our course content alone couldn’t possibly cover the variety they are gaining from the teaching practicum. The support of the district staff is key in the success of bringing these students back to our community to teach future Kahoks!”

Rachel Harlan, CAVC criminal justice instructor, said, “This a community policing and career recruitment event to rebuild trust and increase interest in criminal justice careers.”

In addition to Collinsville High School, Red Bud, Dupo, East St. Louis, O’Fallon, Bunker Hill, Edwardsville and Gillespie students attended to learn about different careers in criminal justice.

Local, state and federal agencies represented include FBI, Illinois State Police CSI, Game Wardens, Collinsville Police Department, Illinois Department of Corrections, Madison County Probation, Madison County Juvenile Detention, Madison County Sheriff’s Department, SWIC Police Academy, Fairview Heights Police Department, U.S. Army, Army National Guard, U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force.

In addition to conversations and interactions with current professionals, attendees were treated to a special demonstration by Collinsville Police Department canine officer Rocky.

Ms. Harlan wanted to provide an opportunity for students to talk firsthand with professionals in different areas of criminal justice and learn about potential career paths. Bringing the day to fruition was a coordinated effort between Madison County, CAVC and the institutions who participated.

“I want to thank [former CAVC director] Dr. Blackard for helping me develop this event and for her support through the years. I could have not pulled this off without her. I also want to say thank you to [current] CAVC Director Joe McGinnis for giving me the freedom to be creative,” said Harlan.

May 4, 2022 – Collinsville Area Vocational Center (CAVC) announced today that Collinsville High School senior Ayleen Cortez is the first recipient of the Marilyn & Doug Huber Vocational Scholarship. The Hubers joined CAVC faculty and Director Joe McGinnis for the announcement of the $2,500 award.

Ayleen is a student in the CAVC Criminal Justice program. After graduation, she plans to study psychology at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

“Once I graduate with my bachelors, I hope to pursue a career in psychiatry or become a psychologist,” said Cortez, “I chose to major in psychology because it will allow me to develop a broad understanding of human behavior, and the skills needed to understand or interpret it.”

Huber Vocational Scholarship

Marilyn Huber was a school psychologist in Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 for 17 years before retiring. Their children Aaron (CHS Class of 2005) and Patrick (CHS Class of 2006) attended Collinsville schools. Doug’s father was the Superintendent of Schools in Westville, Illinois, which added to their family’s desire to support education. Their passion for the Collinsville community, and new scholarship initiatives launched by CUSD 10 and CAVC, provided the catalyst for their philanthropy.

“I grew up in Collinsville and it’s where we raised our family,” said Marilyn, “Collinsville has such dedicated teachers and staff. We are impressed with the innovative approach the district has taken to grow future teachers through the Kahoks Teaching Kahoks program. And, as a former school psychologist, I know students have different talents and many thrive in the “hands-on” environment offered by Career and Technical Education. Access to both of these opportunities is important.”

“Our contribution to these scholarship programs will help make it possible for high school graduates to continue their education and move toward careers. A simple act by our family will make a difference to students who are trying to pay for college or technical training,” she said.

“Mr. and Mrs. Huber’s passion to make a difference, and their love for the district, are evident in their generous contribution that will benefit our high school students for years to come and expand our work force in both education and the trades,” said Collinsville CUSD 10 Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich. “They embody one of our communities’ strongest qualities: a constant dedication to our students.”

The Huber gift is among several endowed scholarship funds supported through the Collinsville Area Community Foundation (CACF).

April 21, 2022 – National Education Association (NEA) President Becky Pringle and Illinois Education Association (IEA) President Kathi Griffin visited Collinsville High School (CHS) on Thursday, April 21, 2022 to learn about the Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 Kahoks Teaching Kahoks initiative.

The two met with district administrators and Collinsville Education Association (CEA) leadership to discuss how Kahoks Teaching Kahoks was conceptualized to grow future teachers from current students, with an emphasis on developing and recruiting minority teachers. They toured the current Collinsville Area Vocational Center preschool program where high school students work and earn dual credit in Early Childhood education.

CHS/CAVC teachers Shawn Geppert and Akiya Perry described the history of the preschool program and how it will be expanded next school year to include courses and opportunities for high school students to explore career opportunities in elementary and secondary education, too. Kahoks Teaching Kahoks also includes scholarship and professional development opportunities for CHS students who want to pursue a college degree in education and return to the district to teach.

CUSD 10 Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich talked about local support for the program and funding that includes payroll deduction, as well as contributions from local businesses, alumni and teachers. NEA President Becky Pringle commended the district for involving current teachers in fostering the next generation of professional educators. She said the program is an example for school districts and vowed to stay in touch to see how Kahoks Teaching Kahoks evolves over the next few years as students graduate and continue their training.

IEA President Kathi Griffin said Collinsville’s efforts fit with initiatives across the State of Illinois to incentivize students to become educators. “We love our profession and want to encourage the next generation to follow in our footsteps,” she said.

CEA leadership representatives Stacey Lauenstein and Emily Thoman hosted the NEA/IEA delegation for their visit. CHS Assistant Principal TaRael Kee provided background information about the district’s Equity and Diversity Committee and how its efforts lead to the creation of Kahoks Teaching Kahoks. CAVC Director Joe McGinnis gave a quick tour of the vocational center, talked about its many programs, and provided context for the new education curriculum and courses students will be able to take starting next school year.

Doug and Marilyn Huber at CAVC Feb 28 2022February 28, 2022 – Collinsville Area Vocational Center (CAVC) has received a generous donation from long-time Collinsville residents Doug and Marilyn Huber to endow vocational scholarships. The announcement was one piece of news highlighted during February 2022 Career and Technical Education Month.

CAVC Director Joe McGinnis said, “The Huber family was looking to be philanthropic and help improve the community where they raised their family. They designated their gift to be split equally between the Kahoks Teaching Kahoks future teachers program and post-secondary scholarships for vocational students.”

Marilyn Huber was a school psychologist in Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 for 17 years before retiring. Their children Aaron (CHS Class of 2005) and Patrick (CHS Class of 2006) attended Collinsville schools. CAVC Promotes Career & Technical Education During February 2022 CTE Month

Collinsville Area Vocational Center currently boasts its highest enrollment in a decade as more students and families see Career and Technical Education as a practical path to the workforce.

“We are preparing students for careers through a wide variety of programs. From long-established classes for the trades like welding and automotive mechanics, to courses in fields like education and cybersecurity, CAVC has diverse offerings that appeal to a broad-range of students,” said CAVC Director Joe McGinnis.

In addition to Collinsville High School, CAVC currently serves students from Civic Memorial High School, Dupo High School, East Alton – Wood River High School, Edwardsville High School, Highland High School, Lebanon High School, Mascoutah High School and Triad High School. McGinnis says other local schools are considering becoming part of CAVC.

“Taking a course at the CAVC is the safest, most affordable way to learn about a future career,” he says, “Students can see if a field appeals to them and use vocational classes – which offer things like dual credit and professional certifications – as a springboard to the workforce and/or post-high school education.”

McGinnis says course popularity varies from year-to-year. Currently, auto mechanics, criminal justice and welding top students’ lists. Today, many CAVC classes are at capacity and have a waitlist. Program admittance is very competitive. Students are ranked based on academic performance, attendance and discipline during their early high school years to be accepted into vocational courses which are offered to juniors and seniors.

Current CAVC programs are: Auto Body Repair, Automotive Mechanics, Building Trades, Clinical Health Occupations, Cosmetology, Criminal Justice, Cybersecurity, Early Childhood Education, Electronics, Engineering, Food Service, K-12 Teacher Prep, Precision Machining, and Welding.

“For the 2022-23 school year, we will launch the Kahoks Teaching Kahoks initiative to instruct and recruit future K-12 educators. This will be done through 2 new courses, Teaching as a Profession and a 2nd year education field experience course. We hope to add additional new course offerings over the next three years. A dental assistant and agriculture program are two under consideration,” said McGinnis.

In March, CAVC will launch an updated career exploration project to make young students and their families more aware of CTE programs and career paths. The plan includes digital curriculum and a mobile career exploration trailer that will be brought to schools serving students in K – 8 grades.

“One of the long-term goals of CUSD #10 and CAVC is to increase career awareness and opportunities for students at all grade levels within the district,” said McGinnis, “ We have re-imagined and are rolling out new ways to increase career exposure to students in the lower grade levels. This will include a digital career curriculum for elementary students and a mobile career exploration trailer that will have 3d printers and LEGO stem kits that classroom teachers can reserve. As we roll out this initiative we will also be looking to add additional equipment and tooling to further expand opportunities for district students.”

Parents wanting to know more about Career and Technical Education, should contact CAVC Director Joe McGinnis at jmcginni@cusd.kahoks.org or 618-343-6141.

November 1, 2021 – When weather conditions make travel hazardous, CUSD 10 will declare an E-Learning Day meaning students will learn remotely from home based on expectations determined by their schools/teachers.

PLEASE NOTE: A complete school closure could still be issued if power outages or other circumstances make remote learning difficult or impossible.

E-Learning Days are important because students do not lose instruction due to inclement weather, so learning continues and there are no missed days to make-up at the end of the school year. If school is “Closed” – those emergency days are added to the school calendar. If no emergency days are used, the school year ends on the designated day.

The Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 Board of Education approved a plan to allow Snow/Emergency Weather Days to become E-Learning Days beginning in Winter 2020-21. The change was approved on December 21, 2020.

WHAT IS AN E-LEARNING DAY?

E-Learning Days are designed to serve as official attendance days of school when the students and teachers stay at home due to emergency situations, yet learning continues as students remotely leverage digital tools and engage in teacher-prepared lessons. The Collinsville School District E-Learning Plan also includes teachers available remotely to assist students by email with their assignments during the hours of the E-Learning school day.

ISSUING AN E-LEARNING DAY

In the event conditions are such that school must be cancelled, administration will do its best to make that determination by 6:00am. Sometimes this is not possible, as conditions can change rather quickly in Southern Illinois, but the goal will be to make the determination by 6:00 am.

Once the decision is made, students, staff, and parents will be notified:

 • through our District call system
 • through our website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
 • through local tv and radio stations, as well as newspaper websites

If an E-Learning Day is implemented, everyone will be notified in the same manner as when school is cancelled. Students will be expected to utilize the day to meet with their teachers virtually and work on their required assignments/activities.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE

During E- Learning, attendance will be taken. The preferred method of collecting attendance is always a one-to-one daily connection between the teacher and the student. However, we recognize that this method is not available or practical for all student scenarios under an E-Learning situation. We encourage and suggest several ideas for how classroom teachers can collect and count a student as present during an E-Learning Day.

 • Video conference “check-ins.”
 • Wellness checks coupled with a question on student engagement/participation in lessons.
 • Phone calls coupled with a question on student engagement/participation in lessons.
 • Text messages or email communications coupled with a question on student engagement/participation in lessons.
 • Packet collections by school personnel.

GRADING

Students will be accountable for completing the assigned tasks either online or by printed materials in the same manner as any other school day. Students will only receive a “present” for attendance once work is completed. Incomplete work will be considered incomplete.

Teachers are encouraged to hold students accountable for completing work as they would with any missing assignments. Completed work can either be turned in online or on an upcoming school day.

TEACHER AVAILABILITY

Teachers will periodically monitor their email and respond to questions during their school hours. If you need an appointment please reach out to your teacher. For many teachers, other systems may work better than email (Telephone, ClassDojo, Google Classroom, etc.) and staff are encouraged to utilize these other communication tools as the situation dictates. However, all teachers will check their email regularly and provide feedback and guidance to students/parents on an as needed basis.

The District understands that many teachers have their own responsibilities that may arise with these days (supervising their own children, shoveling snow, etc.). The District also understands that there will be time spent in follow up activities after the E-Learning Day (reviewing completed assignments, providing support for students without internet access, encouraging students to complete assignments, etc.). Staff will respond to all communication requests in a timely manner (within 24 hours) during scheduled hours. Teachers may communicate outside of office hours as needed.

LIVE VIDEO INSTRUCTION

Google Meet will be one of the primary video conferencing tools used to host live class sessions in communication with students during E-Learning Days for online learners. If your child is unable to attend a live session, the classroom teachers may provide either notes or a recorded version of the session.

Elementary teachers with students in grade PreK-6 will include in their morning announcement the times students are to log in for live instruction.

For grade levels 7-12, staff will use the following abbreviated class times when scheduling synchronous (live) sessions:

CHS CMS
advisory 8:35-8:58
1st hour 8:00-8:35 9:01-9:44
2nd hour 8:45-9:20 9:47-10:30
3rd hour 9:30-10:05 10:33-11:16

]]>
September 28, 2021 – Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 (CUSD 10) has launched a “Grow Our Own” Future Teacher Program to encourage current high school students to become educators in the district.

“Our goal is to encourage, recruit and foster future Kahoks to not only pursue education as a career, but return to Collinsville to work and raise their families,” said CUSD 10 Superintendent Dr. Mark B. Skertich.

The aptly named “Kahoks Teaching Kahoks” program includes specialized courses available to students in grades 9-12 and a scholarship program for graduating seniors who will be education majors. There are plans to provide additional money for loan repayment if a program participant becomes a teacher within CUSD 10 once acquiring their appropriate teaching licensure.

Ameren Illinois announced they will support the scholarship program with $25,000 to empower CHS seniors to become future Kahok educators. The grant funds were made available through the Ameren Cares program, which connects Ameren Illinois with the communities it serves through charitable giving and volunteering.

“As a former educator myself, I’ve seen first-hand the difference that can be made in the lives of young people when they see teachers who look like them, come from similar backgrounds, and understand the unique socio-economic needs of the local community,” Mark said. “Ameren Illinois is proud to support this important initiative and help Collinsville Community School District prepare their students for careers as future Kahok teachers.”

Future Teacher Courses

The courses are an expansion of curriculum offered through Collinsville High School (CHS) and the Collinsville Area Vocational Center (CAVC) – some offering dual credit through Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC). The new courses were approved by the CUSD 10 Board of Education September 20, 2021.

“For the 22/23 school year, the Collinsville Area Vocational Center will be rolling out our revamped education program. This will consist of 3 classes: Early Childhood Education, Teaching as a Profession, and Teaching Practicum. These classes will allow us to continue running our own preschool, while also introducing future teachers to the profession through classwork and student teaching opportunities within the district,’ said CAVC Director Joe McGinnis.

Collinsville High School students can take a new one-hour elective titled “Child Development & Instruction” as early as their freshman or sophomore year. Content includes projects to develop an understanding of the learner and the learning process, instructional planning, the learning environment, instructional strategies, and career opportunities in the field of education.

Courses offered to students through CAVC include:

 • Early Childhood – 2.5 hour dual credit – Prepares students to work with young children (PreK-K) through classroom and job shadowing experiences, as well as an on-site preschool center.
 • Teaching as a Profession – 2.5 hour dual credit – Provides an opportunity for students to develop skills in areas such as lesson plans, teaching strategies, learning styles, diversity in education, and classroom management.
 • Education Practicum – 2.5 hour dual credit – Provides workplace experience to students in fields related to education. Students will be placed in district buildings at various grade levels based on career pathways in education.

Scholarships

When the districtwide Kahok Diversity & Equity Committee was formed in 2019, their initial task was to discuss ways to recruit more minority teachers. This led to the district’s concerted effort to “grow” teachers by encouraging current students to pursue careers in education.

The Kahok Diversity & Equity Committee has established the Future Teachers Scholarship program for Collinsville High School seniors. Upon selection, scholarship recipients will be awarded $1,000 per year toward their college expenses for four years. Committee members have finalized the selection rubric and will release the application in time for the Class of 2022 to apply in the spring.

The Kahoks Teaching Kahoks scholarships are among a number of new scholarship opportunities that will be announced by CAVC Director Joe McGinnis in coming weeks.

“We have worked hard over the past year to develop a vehicle that will allow us to initially offer a few scholarships to encourage students to pursue their desired career whether it be in Education or the Industrial Trades. Looking toward the future we hope to expand our scholarship offerings in number and the amount awarded to students,” he explained.

Scholarship Funding

Funding for the scholarship program will come from personal and corporate donations, as well as a payroll deduction program for CUSD 10 employees. Donations are tax deductible and will be accepted through the existing Collinsville Education Scholarship Foundation 501c3. The initial number of scholarships presented will be based on the amount of money raised during the current fundraising effort.

“Our current goal is to award $12,000 – $16,000 in Kahoks Teaching Kahoks scholarships annually,” said Superintendent Dr. Skertich. “We are fortunate to partner with the Collinsville Education Scholarship Foundation to receive and administer the funds. Donations are tax deductible and eligible for corporate matching. We also want to encourage donations in honor or memory of individuals – especially current and former educators.”

Click HERE for a downloadable donation form.

“Having the ability to assist students in their future education and careers is extremely important for the students, our school district, and our community. We are taking a grassroots approach, to build our students into the future workforce of Unit 10 and the community as a whole,” said McGinnis.

“The district is fortunate to have unwavering support from our families, communities and businesses. Ameren Illinois is a perfect example, and we want to thank Collinsville alumni and Ameren Illinois President Richard Mark for the support shown to Kahoks Teaching Kahoks. Their generosity will help Collinsville create its own pipeline of educators for years to come from within our school district,” said Skertich.

Joe McGinnis CAVC Director 2020-21Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 has announced Mr. Joe McGinnis will become director of the Collinsville Area Vocational Center (CAVC) effective for the 2020-21 school year.

The Collinsville Area Vocational Center is a two-year, public vocational training center for high school juniors and seniors. Housed on the campus of Collinsville High School, CAVC is a cooperative program which also includes students from Dupo High School, East Alton-Wood River High School, Highland High School, Lebanon High School, Mascoutah High School, Triad High School, Civic Memorial High School and Edwardsville High School.

McGinnis began with Collinsville CUSD #10 in 2011 as a Special Education teacher and most recently served as an assistant principal at Collinsville High School. His experience with construction trades began when he was a teenager working with his uncle.

He expanded his skill set by taking welding at Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC). During his early years as an educator, McGinnis ran a lawn and landscaping company and worked for other area contractors. These experiences gave him an appreciation for career and technical education.

“People who have baseline skills in a trade can take that with them for the rest of their lives,” says McGinnis, “Even if they pursue another career path, they can always fall back on their vocational know-how. My favorite quote is from the early American West: ‘When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on!’ Career and technical skills can become that ‘knot” for people.”

Currently, CAVC offers courses in Auto Body Repair, Automotive Repair, Building Trades, Clinical Health Occupations, Cosmetology, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood Education, Electronics, Engineering, Food Service, Precision Machining, Web/Graphic Design and Welding. A Cybersecurity program is scheduled to start in Fall 2021.

McGinnis says while he is most familiar with the trade side of CAVC offerings, he looks forward to learning more about the business courses and other career opportunities students have through the program.

McGinnis hopes to grow the number of students participating in the program and the course offerings available to them. He is planning to be a visible resource for the schools that send students to CAVC and looks forward to getting to know the CAVC students and their needs.

Joe McGinnis grew up in Collinsville. He received a Bachelor of Science in Special Education and Learning Behavior Specialist 1 Certification from Southern Illinois University Carbondale; and Master of Arts in Education Administration and Principal Certification from McKendree University.

McGinnis and his wife Sarah, a special education teacher at Collinsville High School, live in Maryville, Illinois with their children Conner (6) and Austin (4). They are expecting the birth of their daughter Nora in mid-July.

Collinsville Area Vocational Center is a two-year, public vocational training center for 400+ high school juniors and seniors representing nine schools in Southwestern Illinois. The program is governed by the Collinsville Community Unit School District #10 Board of Education and is located adjacent to Collinsville High School. Programs offer dual credit through Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC), industry-recognized certifications, skills training and career exploration.

Congratulations to Collinsville Area Vocational Center instructor Justin Cann who was chosen Kahok Educator of the Month for November 2019.

Mr. Cann was surprised during machining class on Friday, November 8, 2019 by Edward Jones Representative Jason Rehg and members of the CUSD 10 administrative team.

Cann teaches Introduction to Metals (grades 9-12), Exploring Metals (grades 9-12), Vocational Machining 1 and 2 (grades 11-12) and Building Trades 1 & 2 (grades 11-12) at CAVC.

CAVC Director Dr. Tricia Blackard chose Mr. Cann based on his dedication to CAVC and his students. She said:

“Mr. Cann has been a valuable member of the CAVC staff for many years. His dedication and commitment is evident in everything he does. He recently completed his 2nd residential home with his Building Trades class and is set to break ground on his 3rd home this fall. These projects take considerable organization and a large time commitment beyond the regular school day.

Additionally, Mr. Cann has been an incredible Machining instructor for both CAVC and SWIC. In that role he has continually integrated the newest technologies into his curriculum, so he can prepare his students to continue their education or even directly enter the job market.

Mr. Cann has sought numerous grants from organizations such as Haas, who makes quality machining equipment, and has used those funds to provide scholarships for students to attend CAVC, as well as support the needs of many students who might not be able to acquire the supplies they need to fully engage within the program. This year Mr. Cann has integrated OSHA 10 as a certification for all of his students and has assisted in the cost associated with that certification through his additional grants.

Mr. Cann is an amazing example of selfless dedication and his true commitment to his students and his areas of expertise are evident in everything he does. I am proud to have Mr. Cann as an instructor at CAVC as well as a teacher for Collinsville High School.”

Collage of DIS at CAVC photosOn Thursday, April 25, 2019, 6th grade classes from Dorris Intermediate School went on a field trip across town to experience what the Collinsville Area Vocational Center has to offer them in a few years.

Students spent the morning rotating among the various CAVC classrooms getting hands-on opportunities guided by CAVC students and staff.

They did things like…

 • Prepare food in a commercial kitchen
 • Remove and replace lug nuts on an automobile tire
 • Take fingerprints, use handcuffs and experience “drunk goggles”
 • Experiment with electricity and robots
 • Learn what welders do and see the equipment up close
 • Watch precision machining in action
 • Observe a real preschool class
 • Practice CPR
 • Use tools to build a wooden key holder

Here’s a look at how their morning was spent:

Kathy Hankins and Jason Rehg Nov 2018

Kathy Hankins and Jason Rehg

Collinsville Area Vocational Center instructor, Kahy Hankins was selected CUSD 10 Staff Member of the Month for November 2018.

Hankins was surprised with the announcement on November 13, 2018 by CAVC Director Dr. Tricia Blackard and Jason Rehg of Edward Jones. Rehg is the sponsor of the monthly award in Collinsville Community Unit School District #10.

Ms. Hankins teaches Introduction to Electronics, Introduction to Robotics, Robotics, CP Vocational Electronics 1, CP Vocational Electronics 2 and occasionally a math class or two.

She has been an educator for 17 years. Hankins started her career as an electrical engineer and after some personal reflection, decided to follow her true passion and became a teacher.

Dr. Blackard nominated her for this award for being “caring, kind, thoughtful, compassionate, intelligent and dedicated to her students.”

Kathy Hankins in her classroom at CAVC“Ms. Hankins is a truly dedicated teacher who puts her heart and soul into everything she does. She is passionate about her content areas and that passion is contagious. Every year she deals with some of our most challenging students, and by the end of the year has become not only a respected teacher, but also a mentor and friend,” said Dr. Blackard.

“As a female in a predominantly male dominated field, Ms. Hankins has earned the respect of colleagues, administrators, and students. After being hired to teach math and later Electronics, Ms. Hankins discovered a need to update the course offerings by adding Intro to Robotics,” added Blackard.

“The enrollment in this course has skyrocketed over the years which led her to propose a follow up course at the request of students. In this math heavy field, Ms. Hankins has been able to not only teach, but to bring understanding and application to very complex math related concepts. Even students who state they are terrible at math grow to appreciate and master this curriculum.”

“In addition to her instruction, Ms. Hankins has taken on many additional responsibilities which contribute to the positive climate in the school. Over the years she has sponsored multiple clubs and activities such as Christians in Action, the Robotics Club and most recently, a Table Tennis Club. She can always be counted on to go the extra mile for her students both in and out of the classroom. It is very common to see ten or more students in her room during their study hall as well as after school.”

“Ms. Hankins has done an outstanding job of bringing in guest speakers, aligning field trips, participating in SkillsUSA, etc. Through her efforts, the IBEW has become an on-going supporter of CAVC through presentations and assistance with training. She has had a parent that is an electrician come in and help the kids learn how to bend conduit. She even takes her classes to a power plant so they can expand their knowledge. Last year she had five students who qualified through a written test compete in the hands-on portion at SkillsUSA and two who earned 9th and 14th place in the state respectively.”

The Collinsville High School October 2018 Faculty Member of the Month is Aaron Schuster, automotive repair instructor in the Collinsville Area Vocational Center.

Schuster’s nomination reads:

I would like to nominate Aaron Schuster. Aaron helps prepare the next generation of vocational car mechanics. He has to work with a wide array of students who may not even know the proper names of tools used in a garage to students who know how to rebuild a small engine already. Students can work on their own vehicles during class, but Aaron graciously opens up the garage to faculty and staff members’ vehicles for repair that allows the kids to learn even more. Whether it be a simple oil change, replacing brake pads, or rebuilding an engine, Aaron helps his students tackle whatever projects come their way.

For helping to prepare and guide the next generation of auto mechanics and being a trusted mechanic and friend to the staff at CHS, we proudly name Aaron Schuster as the October Faculty Member of the Month!

Every school has been given one of four summative designations: Exemplary, Commendable, Underperforming and Lowest Performing. The designations provide a public benchmark of each school’s progress toward the goal of preparing all students for success in college and career. (Click here to view a detailed explanation of ISBE Summative Designations )

CUSD 10 2018 School Designations

Collinsville High School Commendable
Collinsville Middle School Commendable
Dorris Intermediate School Commendable
Caseyville Elementary School Commendable
Jefferson Elementary School Commendable
Kreitner Elementary School Commendable
Maryville Elementary School Commendable
Renfro Elementary School Underperforming
Summit Elementary School Commendable
Twin Echo Elementary School Commendable
Webster Elementary School Exemplary

Summative designations are based on a data set of 2018 PARCC, SAT and DLM-AA proficiency scores, growth (grades 4-8), English language progress to proficiency (grades 1-2), chronic absenteeism (grades 1-12), and ninth grade on track and graduation rates (for high schools only). (Click here to view an explanation of ISBE Multiple Indicators of Student Success )

Exemplary: A school that has no underperforming demographic groups at or below the “all students” group of lowest five percent of all Title 1 schools, a graduation rate of greater than 67 percent, and whose performance is in the top ten percent of schools statewide.

Commendable: A school that has no underperforming student demographic groups at or below the “all students” group of the lowest five percent of all Title 1 schools, a graduation rate greater than 67 percent, and whose performance is not in the top ten percent statewide.

Underperforming: A school in which one or more student demographic groups is performing at or below the “all students” group of the lowest five percent of all Title 1 schools.

Lowest Performing: A school that is in the lowest-performing five percent of Title 1 schools in Illinois and any high schools that have a graduation rate of 67 percent or less.

The state’s new accountability system evaluates schools based on a fuller picture of school quality, including the performance of individual student groups and measure beyond test scores.

For example, ISBE has indicated Renfro Elementary School’s Underperforming designation is based on the performance of students who receive Special Education services at the school. As a result, Renfro now qualifies for greater funding and supports to address the needs of those students.

The State of Illinois has initiated a new Evidence-Based Funding formula which drives resources to improve outcomes for those in greatest need of increased support. The data collected by ISBE – and shown in the State Report Cards – will be directly linked to resources allocated to students.

CUSD 10 Perspective on Designations

The new Illinois school designations move beyond rating schools based solely on standardized test performance. CUSD 10 has long advocated additional factors should also be included in the formula because socio-economic issues, student mobility and other community-related factors all play a role in student performance.

The Collinsville school district is dedicated to meeting the needs of every students no matter where they are on the academic scale or where their interests and abilities lead. The new state report cards focus on data we have been using for several years to help improve outcomes for our students. The 2018 summative designations depict our progress in meeting those needs.

“Our district’s decision making is strongly rooted in data,” says CUSD 10 Superintendent Dr. Robert Green. ”Over the past few years, we’ve combed through data to identify areas for improvement and initiated plans to address those areas.”

“We’ve implemented new curriculum, purchased supplemental materials for low performing students and focused efforts into ELL program initiatives. We have allocated staff and financial resources from Title grants and Evidence-Based Funding,” according to Dr. Green.

“We are honored and proud of Webster Elementary’s designation as an exemplary school. Webster’s leadership and staff excel in using the resources available to them to meet the needs of their students,” added Dr. Green.

“Our district collaborates within and across schools through Professional Learning Communities each week. The educators in our schools are fortunate to have access to colleagues who are generating positive results in classrooms right here in our community.”

Illinois State Report Cards

ISBE has compiled a report card for every school and school district. Interactive report cards can be found at https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/. The report cards show school data, including academic performance, school environment, educators, students and highlights provided by principals. The information is designed to help parents and communities act as informed partners in the education of children.
