Inside the World of Lecanto High School's Model United Nations: A Global Stage for Future Leaders

Walking into a Model United Nations (Model UN) conference feels like stepping into a global summit. Students, clad in formal attire, raise placards, debate pressing world issues, and negotiate solutions—mirroring the actions of real diplomats. But for members of our school’s Model UN club, the experience extends beyond an academic exercise; it is a platform for leadership, critical thinking, and personal growth, preparing students for college and even political careers.

Model UN immerses students in the world of diplomacy by assigning them to represent different countries in simulated UN committees. Delegates research international affairs, draft position papers, and engage in structured debates to develop well-informed arguments.

“Model UN is a club that connects us to different countries, allowing us to explore global issues through engaging activities,” said junior Karthik Lachireddy.

At conferences, students tackle complex topics such as climate change, human rights, and international security. The objective is to debate , collaborate, and craft viable solutions to global challenges.

“Model UN is different from other debate clubs because it operates globally,” explained junior Ronnie Ho. “Many debate clubs focus on local or state issues, but Model UN addresses international concerns.”

Participation in Model UN hones essential skills, including research, public speaking, and negotiation—valuable assets for academic success and future careers. Members gain the confidence to tackle real-world challenges, equipping them with the ability to articulate their viewpoints effectively.

“Model UN enhances college applications, regardless of whether you hold a leadership position,” said club president Jan Amadeus Sols. “It demonstrates that you can debate, build arguments, and consider multiple perspectives.”

Beyond skill development, Model UN fosters camaraderie among students passionate about global affairs. It provides a space to engage in diplomatic discourse, gain a deeper understanding of international relations, and form lasting friendships with like-minded peers.

“Model UN is an opportunity for high school students to step into the shoes of diplomats,” said club sponsor Anna Buettner. “Each participant represents a country, debates key global issues—such as food insecurity or nuclear disarmament—and works collaboratively to simulate real UN General Assembly proceedings.”

Through Model UN, students cultivate critical thinking, refine their public speaking skills, and develop a global perspective—preparing them to become the next generation of leaders and changemakers.
