Students, families learn how to navigate dangers on the internet

Cicero District 99 would like to thank Detective Richard Wistocki for spending an entire day with our students, parents and staff talking about the dangers of certain behaviors while using the internet.

Our students learned, discussed and came to understand:

❌How a predator works and the dangers of making online friends

❌The dangers of file sharing and downloading things without parental permission

❌How to be good cyber citizens and how their cell phone apps can be dangerous

❌Why they need to trust their parents if they or a friend is in an uncomfortable situation

❌That nothing online in anonymous and how cyberbullying affects them

❌The dangers of sharing inappropriate pictures and how it will affect the rest of their lives

At the end, they were asked what they would do in certain situations and were allowed to ask questions back!

Our parents learned:

❌About cyberbullying and how to protect their family from cyber bullies.

❌What is on their child's phone applications and how internet predators have access to their children through those applications

❌The dangers of online gaming and posting photos to social media

❌File sharing, sexting and video sharing online

❌Controlling and monitoring computers in their home, their child's cell phone and which cell phones are the safest for children.

At the end, a discussion was held on how parents can approach their children about monitoring.
