A message from Unity Principal Heather Mathis

Good Afternoon Families,

Yesterday, Superintendent Dr. Aldo Calderin sent out a statement regarding a social media post a student saw which indicated a potential threat to a school. After investigating with the Cicero Police Department, it was found to be a non-credible threat that was posted originally in March of 2024. The post did not mention any schools or districts. We would like to again thank the student for bringing the concern to our attention so that we could investigate to ensure everyone's safety.

We also had a separate lockdown drill with the Cicero Police Department. These two events were not related. We practice these drills often to ensure that we are prepared in case of an actual emergency.  Any time there is a drill conducted, we send home communication to all families.

Unfortunately, we continue to have social media posts spreading misinformation. These posts are creating unnecessary worry among families. Please rest assured that the safety and security of the students and staff is our number one priority. We ask that you check emails and text messages from the school and district on a regular basis for accurate information.

We need your support. We would like to invite you to come to Unity Junior High School tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 18 from 5-7 p.m., for an Internet Safety Parent Workshop. Please enter through Door 1. At this time, guest speaker, Detective Rich Wistocki, will inform parents about cyber crimes such as cyber bullying and sexting, Snapchat, Instagram and how to keep your child safe. The more we are aware of the harms of social media, the more we can support our students and move forward as a community.

Sincerely,

Heather Mathis

Principal
