Bulldog Band Earns Sweepstakes On March 6th, the Mighty Bulldog Band of Borger High represented Borger ISD and Borger High School at the UIL Region 1 Concert and Sight-reading Contest. This contest was held at Panhandle High School. The Bulldog Concert and Symphonic Bands performed their concert program for a panel of three judges, then sight-read for a separate panel of three additional judges. The concert band, under the direction of Nick Mears, performed a concert program consisting of “Highlander March” by Ployhar, “La Rejouissance” by Handel/ arr. Williams and “Joy” by Ticheli. The symphonic band, under the direction of Kevin Kuehler, performed a concert program consisting of “March: The Nine” by Konagaya, “Voices in the Shy” by Hazo and “American Riversongs” by La Plante. The concert band received Excellent marks from each judge on the concert panel and Superior marks from each judge on the sight-reading panel, while the symphonic band received Superior marks from each judge on both panels. Concert judge Jason Jones of Burnet HS commented, “Wonderful job of bringing out the musical ideas of the selections. I really enjoyed your performance!” Sight-reading judge James Nance of Lubbock said, “Wonderful looking groups… great job today!” This is the first time since at least 1996 that more than one band from Borger High School has received Superior marks at the same contest. As a result of this performance and the Superior rating in marching earned earlier in the fall, the Mighty Bulldog Band was awarded a Sweepstakes trophy. This marks the second consecutive year that Borger High School has earned that honor. Kevin Kuehler, director of bands at Borger High School, commented, “I couldn’t be prouder of a group of kids. They’ve done everything we’ve asked them to do. They are ensuring that the tradition of excellence that is a part of the Borger Band program continues.” Congratulations to all Bulldog Band members for their accomplishments this year at Borger High.
