Alumni Spotlight: Claire Huffine Hillyer is a 2016 graduate of Borger High School. She graduated from Borger High School with 21 hours of college credit having competed in tennis all four years of high school. As a ninth-grader, she had never played tennis. However, with lots of practice, grit and determination, she ended up going to state her junior and senior years.
Claire was able to use her high school success to sign a tennis scholarship to McMurry University in Abilene where she has continued to be successful. She was named Freshman of the Year her first year at McMurry by earning 23 wins and winning her way into the National Tournament. She is currently the number one player on the team and recently earned the women’s player of the week award in the American Southwest Conference for her success so far this season.
Claire will graduate in May with a major in graphic design. She is in the honor’s program at McMurry and has been on the Dean’s List every semester. She is married to 2016 Borger High School graduate Sam Hillyer who is also an athlete at McMurry. Sam plays baseball and had a distinguished athletic career in baseball at both Borger High School and Frank Phillips College.
