The Borger High School Speech and Debate Team participated at the Canyon Tascosa swing. Kayli Potts and Lars Nelson both advanced to quarterfinals in the Canyon tournament and on Saturday Lars Nelson again advanced to quarterfinals in the Tascosa tournament. Kayli Potts received enough points qualifying her for TFA state.  She also received a very unique award for an outstanding LD speaker. This award goes to the best overall speaker in the preliminary rounds. It is incredibly difficult to achieve and to our knowledge, it is the first one that Borger has brought home! Congratulations to both outstanding Bulldogs!!

On January 11, 2020, members of the Borger High School Band auditioned for the right to represent the Texas Panhandle as a member of the Texas Music Educators Association and Association of Texas Small School Bands All State Bands. The following students were selected to the Area round of auditions, which were held at Levelland High School and Odessa Permian High School on January 11th: Kaleb Hughes on trombone and Daniela Soldevilla on baritone. Kaleb finished 12th of 24 for the TMEA All State audition. The top two were selected to the All State Band. Daniela finished 6th of 11 for the ATSSB All State Band. They only took the top player in her section. Despite not making an All State group, these young people are great examples of outstanding citizens and are to be commended for their hard work and dedication to the Borger Bands.  Way to go Bulldogs!

Mrs. Green, BHS Choir Director, is proud to announce the results from TMEA All-State Choir auditions. Each student performed their very best and represented BHS at the highest level. Four choir students competed at Area, and all four of them were selected to be members of the 2020 TMEA Small School All-State Mixed Choir! Maddison Huval received 1st chair in the Alto section, and Kayleigh Watkins received 4th chair, also in the Alto section. In the tenor section, Efrain Rangel received 2nd chair and Mateo Lopez received 4th chair. An interesting fact... over 60,000 musicians start the All-State process each Fall. Only 1% of them actually make an All-State Ensemble. Borger High School has 4 students in that 1%! In addition, Mrs. Green would like to recognize Kayleigh Watkins as being a 4-year All-State choir member. This is a tremendous success. BHS has had 4 students previously obtain this status. Setting the goal of becoming a 4-year All-Stater, is a daunting task. It takes hard work, dedication, and persistence year after year. Kayleigh absolutely exhibits those qualities, not only in music but in her academics and other activities she is a part of which are volleyball and softball. Kayleigh is also a tremendous leader that encourages both her teammates and competition. Mrs. Green goes on to say, “Many times, she helps those who compete against her to become better musicians, she rejoices in their success, and she cries with them when they fall short. She is an amazing young lady and we will miss her for years to come. However, we are excited to see what the future holds for Kayleigh and know that she has what it takes to be successful!” Congratulations Singing Bulldogs!

Mrs. Hays' Class Gateway Elementary had a little friendly competition for a good cause for its’ latest service project.  Students brought pennies to put in classroom containers for their class to raise money for the Rainbow Room.  Students could also bring in other coins and dollars to “sabotage” other classroom’s containers.  All the pennies were added up for each class and the other coins and paper money were subtracted from the penny total to determine the points for the Penny War Champion.  Through the generosity of students, staff, and families the Penny Wars raised $1147.21 for the Rainbow Room.  Staff volunteers went out and were able to purchase everything on 3 girls' Christmas lists! After shopping for the Rainbow Room kids they adopted, they had $705 leftover to donate to the Rainbow Room to help cover their expenses throughout the year.  Mrs. Cole’s 1st-grade class brought in the most money at $188.43  and will get a cookie party for their efforts.  The Penny War Champion with the most points was Mrs. Hays’ 2nd-grade class and they will get a pizza party.   Way to go Little Bulldogs for giving back to the community!

Kaleb Hughes, a junior trombonist in the Borger High School Band traveled to Amarillo to audition for the Texas Music Educators Association Region 1 Band and Orchestra. The audition was held at Randall High School on Saturday, Dec. 7th. With one exception, all the students auditioning for this honor group represented 5A and 6A schools. As a result of this audition, Kaleb placed first chair in the TMEA Region 1 Symphonic Band and Orchestra. He will attend a clinic and concert for the Region Orchestra on Dec 13-14 at Caprock HS and WTAMU and a clinic for the Symphonic Band on Jan. 17-18, 2020 at Randall HS. Kaleb also qualified for the Area 6A track of the TMEA All-State Band process. The next round of auditions will take place on January 11 at Odessa Permian High School. He will be competing against student musicians from TMEA Area A, which is comprised of schools from the panhandle south to the Odessa/ Midland area, west to El Paso and east to the Ft. Worth suburbs. Kaleb also qualified for the Area round in the TMEA All-State Choir process. Kaleb represented himself, his school and community very well and is to be congratulated on his hard work and dedication to the #Borger ISD Bands.

Ryne Onsurez ·         What year did you graduate?         Graduated in 2016 ·         What do you teach? What do you coach?          I teach Algebra II, both regular and Honors  ·         Highlight a fond memory or two that you have from high school         A fond memory would probably be ending Bushland's 43 game district winning                  streak, and another would be the address to the students I did on the first day of              senior year, and having people coming to me afterward saying I made them                      cry because I opened up and made everyone feel like family and they felt the same            way.   ·        What motivated you to become a teacher          My motivation came from my desire of helping others both inside and outside of the           classroom in growing up and trying to help students understand a difficult concept             such as math while making it more enjoyable for them instead of it giving them                 anxiety.   ·        Tell about how you feel being back at BHS        It feels a little weird being back so young because I had a lot of teachers that are             still  here, so I have to figure out what to call them. But, this is my home and I am             proud of it, so I enjoy being back.         The entire high school is under construction, brand new football field and facilities,             but still the same Borger High School.          What are you most excited about for this year?      I'm most excited about being back home with family and friends and with students I         have known since they were younger, and to try to change the mindset in math by           making it easily accessible to the students.  Just proud to be back as a Bulldog and           hopefully can make a positive impact.
