Indigenous Education

The Indigenous Education Program works to support Indigenous student belonging, learning and wellbeing by providing equitable programming that includes a learning environment which reflects their Indigenous cultures. Areas of focus include:

  • Support postsecondary preparation: college tours; connections to resources and supports: scholarships, Upward Bound/Trio, applications, financial aid
  • Academic achievement: graduation Round Dance; check & connect between students and staff; encouragement of study groups and mentorships
  • Culturally relevant curriculum: Indigenous Education staff works in consultation with the AIPAC to make curriculum recommendations regarding Indigenous people(s) to the district; connect staff to professional development opportunities
  • Positive reinforcement of self image: Indigenous experts in schools: authors, performers, speakers, elders; Indigenous Peoples Club support
  • Intercultural Awareness: Cultural Field Trips; In-school cultural programming: singing, beadwork, regalia making, language, etc.
Funding and Eligibility The Native American Education Program is funded through MN Department of Education and Title VI U.S. Department of Education American Indian Education grants. Students enrolled in Brainerd Public Schools who identify as Native American are eligible for program services. We encourage parents/guardians to complete a 506 form for their child to help gain access to additional program funding.
American Indian Parent Advisory Committee (AIPAC)
The AIPAC meets each month to advise the Brainerd School District in the support of our Native American students. The AIPAC promotes a culturally relevant and equitable educational experience to ensure greater academic achievement and success for our Indigenous students.

Brainerd School District’s Native American Education Program services are available to American Indian Students who:

  • Are an enrolled member of a Tribe or Band

  • A child of a Tribe or Band member

  • A grandchild of a Tribe or Band member

In order to qualify for our Native American Education Program, students will need to have a 506 form filled out and on file which is held confidentially in our school records. These forms allow our district to obtain more funding for our Native American Education program and allow uis to better serve our Native American Students.

Native American Parent Advisory Committee

The Native American Parent Advisory Committee is an organized group of parents, students and district staff who meet several times per year in order to discuss the direction and priorities of Native American Education for our school district as well as the services offered within our Native American Education Program.

The parents and students in our program serve as advocates and a valued voice by:

  • sharing the needs, achievements and concerns for students

  • giving guidance on appropriate cultural materials and curriculums used within the school district

  • providing cultural support through events and enrichment classes.

During our meetings we often provide various cultural activities, academic resources and information on upcoming events and services offered within the Native American Education Program.

Food and drinks are provided.
