Freeman as the new Superintendent of Schools. He officially begins on July 1, 2022.

“It is an honor and privilege to be selected as Superintendent of Schools for Bound Brook Public Schools,” Dr. Freeman said. “I am grateful to the Board of Education for the opportunity, and I am extremely excited to collaborate with the students, faculty, staff, families and community members to elevate our educational offerings and expand opportunities for our students.”

The Board of Education approved the hiring of Dr. Freeman at its meeting on March 21, following a months-long search that included input from the school community.

“We welcome Dr. Freeman to our Bound Brook school community and are pleased to have found a leader who is talented and passionate about education,” said Board President Richard Jannuzzi. “We are impressed by Dr. Freeman’s success at creating an environment of academic excellence, unity, and equity, and we know that Dr. Freeman shares our district’s vision and values wholeheartedly.”

Jannuzzi said the Board of Education also thanks Dr. Daniel Gallagher for helping to make this transition smooth and for his years of service as Superintendent.

Dr. Freeman is an educator of more than 25 years and has served as the assistant superintendent of schools for Long Branch Public School District for the past 10 years.

Dr. Freeman began his career in education as an instructional assistant at the Red Bank Primary School in Red Bank, New Jersey. While serving in this capacity, he obtained his teaching certificate through the New Jersey Alternate Route program and was hired as an elementary teacher by the Long Branch Board of Education. While working at the elementary level he taught fourth grade, founded and coached the West End afterschool basketball program, served as advisor for the PRIDE mentoring program, was a member of the School Leadership Team and was recognized as District Teacher of Year.

After four years in the classroom, Dr. Freeman was promoted to assistant principal and shortly after to academy principal at the Long Branch Middle School where he spearheaded a transition to small learning communities, expanded family and community involvement, and collaborated with his team to drastically increase student achievement for all subgroups. Dr. Freeman was then promoted to lead principal of the high school where he led a successful school turnaround initiative that resulted in a substantial decrease in the disparity in academic performance of minority and at-risk students and their peers as shown by increases in standardized assessment scores, attendance and graduation rates, success completion of Advanced Placement and Honors courses, and acceptance to four-year institutions.

In 2011, Dr. Freeman was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Schools. His roles and responsibilities included overseeing all aspects of the daily operation of school’s pre-K-12. This included evaluating and providing professional learning for principals, guiding the implementation of the district strategic plan, increasing community involvement, advancing equity in educational programs, expanding career and technical programs aimed at increasing opportunities for 21st-century careers, and advancing teacher efficacy and student performance.

Dr. Freeman holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from Upsala College, a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Kean University and a doctoral degree in Education Leadership with a concentration in Urban Leadership.  He successfully defended his dissertation titled, The Impact of Professional Learning Communities on Teachers’ Perceptions of Professional Development in 2016.

Dr. Freeman has been happily married to his wife, Roberta, for 20 years and they have three children (the A-Team) Amani, AJ, and Ava who are 9 years old. He currently resides in Tinton Falls, NJ.

Welcome, Dr. Freeman!

COVID-19 Update Letter for Parents (2/28) https://bbrook.org/covid-19-update-letter-for-parents-2-28/ Mon, 28 Feb 2022 15:36:50 +0000 https://bbrook.org/?p=739 Dear Parents/Guardians, Students, and Staff:

The Board of Education, in collaboration with input from the school physician, administration, school nurses, teachers, and staff members, decided at its February 21st meeting to move the district to a “mask optional” status for all students, staff, and visitors starting March 7th, 2022. The administration and Board of Education view this step as a welcome sign that we are moving to a more normal, pre-pandemic way of life.

Our decision was based on several factors. Governor Phil Murphy’s executive order for a universal mask mandate, which required masks to be worn inside school buildings, will expire on March 7th. The Board discussed the executive order, as well as our school physicians’ recommendation to end the mask mandate, teacher survey, and our school nurses’ concerns. We have also continued to track the district’s COVID-19 case numbers, and have seen a dramatic decrease in recent weeks, following state trends.

While this is a welcome step, the Board of Education is aware that we may need to return to a stricter mask policy if necessary to keep all students and staff safe if a future COVID-19 outbreak arises.

For healthy individuals who have not tested positive for COVID-19; this means:

  1. Masks for staff, students, and visitors to our schools will be the option of the individual and/or guardian of the child starting on March 7th. Please note: The district will not be keeping track of students whose parents want their child to wear a mask. This must be a conversation within the family with an emphasis on self-monitoring.
  2. If staff, students, and visitors are exhibiting COVID-like symptoms, please wear a mask to stop the spread in our schools. As per the CDC and New Jersey Department of Health isolation guidance, anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 should wear a mask for 5 additional days upon returning to school following their 5-day isolation period.
  3. The district will not be enforcing mandatory quarantining for staff or students exposed to COVID-19. We, however, ask that anyone exposed to COVID-19 wear a mask for 5 days.
  4. The district will no longer do contact tracing for potential exposure to COVID-19.
  5. The district reserves the ability to make changes for masking, contact tracing, and quarantining at any point in time if the data, medical determinations, or other information related to an outbreak of COVID-19 occurs in our community.

Please remember to talk to your children about the fact that we have students, family members, and staff in our district who have immunocompromised conditions. We need to support and respect each family’s decision regarding mask-wearing and want all students and staff to feel safe and comfortable continuing to wear a mask if they choose to do so. As a district, we will not tolerate teasing, harassment, or bullying of students who opt to wear a mask.

The state health department is developing additional guidance for school districts, and we will keep you informed on the most updated guidelines for quarantine and testing in schools when that information becomes available.

As always, we strive to make the best decisions for everyone’s well-being and safety. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us at any time. Thank you for your understanding, support and patience during this period of time.

Truly,

Daniel Gallagher, Ed.D.
