Events

The Reading Civic Garden Center offers events and programs all year round for those who never get enough gardening. Most programs take place at the Garden Center, but some special events take place at other locations around the city. You can use the lists below to plan for spring, summer, autumn, and winter events. For more information about any event, contact us.

Spring

Spring is the time of year when gardeners who have been cooped up inside all winter are rarin' to go. Join us at the Garden Center for the following events and programs:

All About Dirt

A garden is only as good as its soil. Join us in the Civic Gardens for a lecture on soil components and soil improvements. You'll learn the value of composting and the importance of healthy microbial life in your garden soil.

Annuals vs. Perennials

Why buy annuals every year when you can buy a perennial once? Our horticulturists give you the lowdown on both types of plants, when and where to use each, and how to combine both for maximum beauty.

When Can I Plant Tomatoes?

Everybody wants to get the summer crops in as early as possible. Join us at the Garden Center for a spirited discussion of the last frost date in our area and what vegetables can withstand our often cold springs.

Spring Herb Sale

This will be the 50th year for the Spring Herb Sale, which takes place on the lawn behind the Garden Center on the last weekend in April, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.. For the freshest basil and the tangiest dill, get your herbs here! All proceeds go to the Garden Center.

Summer

Summer is usually the high point of the year for gardeners, and you'll find plenty to do at the Civic Gardens and the Garden Center.

Summer Social

Join us the first Sunday in June for the annual Summer Social, a chance for Reading folks to meet one another over a cool bowl of ice cream. Games, tours of the gardens, and music, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Color in the Garden

If you find your borders and beds to be blah, join us for a seminar on how to perk up your garden hues. We'll discuss complementary colors for flowers, how to choose foliage plants to pack a punch, and the importance of accents.

City Gardens Tour

Our city is deservedly famous for the quality of its public and private gardens. For a chance to see behind the fences of some of our most stellar private gardens, join us the first Saturday in July. The tour bus leaves at 10:00 a.m. and returns at 3:00 p.m. Ample opportunities to pick up a bit to eat for lunch along the way. Reservations and fee required.
