• Please call your child’s school to sign up for a time to attend. If you have students in more than one school, you can sign up all of your children by calling one school. You do not need to call the school for each of your students.
• You will have a time assigned, so please arrive at that time, not before. We have carefully assigned times to honor state safety guidelines.

Now, she’s about to graduate from Willamette and head to the University of Oregon to study psychology. She’s also the recipient of the University of Oregon’s PathwaysOregon scholarship, which helps to cover the cost of tuition and books for students who qualify. She is thrilled to be taking this next big step and pursuing further education.

“I am so excited,” she said. “I’m eager to meet new friends, and I’ve never lived on my own before. It’ll be a totally new experience.”

Carreon moved to Eugene from Oaxaca, Mexico, at the age of 15, just before the start of her sophomore year of high school. She did so without her parents, to pursue new opportunities and dreams in the United States, and moved in with her cousin and their children here in Eugene. She financially supports herself – babysitting in the evenings and working through the weekends.

“It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made,” she said. “I knew it would be a lot of hard work and sacrifice and I knew it would be difficult to leave my family behind… I had never been without them. But it was the best decision I could make for me and my future.”

Carreon, who is the oldest of three children, also said that her siblings played a role in her decision.

“You want your siblings to see you as a role model,” she said. “If your siblings see that the oldest is doing great things, they’re going to follow you and they see you as someone to look up to.”

English Language Development – A second home at Willamette High

When she first arrived at Willamette High, Carreon said she knew “the basics,” like the alphabet and colors. She watched movies and cartoons with English subtitles and talk with her cousins’ young children in English in an effort to learn the language more quickly.

She said, though, that her English Language Development class, taught by Paul Stieber at Willamette, was really where her English skills began to blossom, and where she started to gain more confidence as an English speaker.

“I used to compare myself to native English speakers and Paul used to tell me that having an accent or not being able to pronounce certain words was not a sign of failure, but instead a strength,” she said. “He used to tell me ‘you’re so intelligent that you know how to understand and speak two languages,’ and that gave me motivation.”

Stieber said that what Loany accomplished in just three years at Willamette was nothing short of amazing.

“When you arrive in a U.S. high school as a newcomer English learner, as Loany was, it’s almost impossible to acquire fluent academic English in four years,” Stieber said. “It’s just a terrific struggle. And Loany did it.”

Carreon said her fellow ELD classmates, whose first languages are Vietnamese, Ukrainian and others, also motivated her to continue to grow her skills in speaking English.

“I have a friend from Vietnam and I wanted to share my culture with her and for her to share her culture with me and be friends,” Carreon said. “I didn’t want her to feel like an outsider.”

Overall, Carreon said her ELD classes were “absolutely her favorite part of high school.”

“People in ELD understand what it’s like to step into a world where you don’t speak the same language,” Carreon said. “They’ve become my best friends here.”

As she moves forward into this next phase of life, Loany said she is feeling brave and nervous at the same time.

“It’s going to be a great new experience,” she said. “I can’t wait to start.”

Graduada de WHS lista para asistir a la Universidad de Oregón después de aprender inglés por sí misma en tres años

Loany Carreón, una estudiante de último año de 18 años en la preparatoria de Willamette, no sabía hablar inglés hace tres años.

Ahora, está a punto de graduarse de Willamette y asistir a la Universidad de Oregón para estudiar psicología. También recibió la beca PathwaysOregon de la Universidad de Oregón, que ayuda a cubrir el costo de la matrícula y los libros para los estudiantes que califican. Ella está encantada de dar este próximo gran paso y continuar su educación.

“Estoy muy emocionada”, dijo. “Estoy ansiosa por conocer nuevos amigos, y nunca antes había vivido sola. Será una experiencia totalmente nueva”.

Carreón se mudó a Eugene desde Oaxaca, México, a la edad de 15 años, justo antes del comienzo de su segundo año de preparatoria. Carreón, quien es la mayor de tres hijos, también dijo que sus hermanos jugaron un papel en su decisión.

“Quieres que tus hermanos te vean como un modelo a seguir”, dijo. “Si tus hermanos ven que el mayor está haciendo grandes cosas, te van a seguir y te ven como alguien a quien admirar”.

Desarrollo del idioma inglés – Un segundo hogar en la preparatoria de Willamette

Cuando llegó por primera vez a la preparatoria de Willamette, Carreón dijo que conocía “lo básico”, como el alfabeto y los colores. Vio películas y caricaturas con subtítulos en inglés y habló con los hijos pequeños de sus primos en inglés en un esfuerzo por aprender el idioma más rápidamente.

Sin embargo, dijo que su clase de desarrollo del idioma inglés, impartida por Paul Stieber en Willamette, fue realmente donde sus habilidades en inglés comenzaron a florecer, y donde comenzó a ganar más confianza como hablante de inglés.

Stieber dijo que lo que Loany logró en solo tres años en Willamette fue nada menos que increíble.

“Cuando llegas a una preparatoria de Estados Unidos como un estudiante de inglés recién llegado, como lo fue Loany, es casi imposible adquirir un inglés académico fluido en cuatro años”, dijo Stieber. “Es una lucha terrible. Y Loany lo hizo”.

Carreón dijo que sus compañeros de clase de ELD, cuyos primeros idiomas son el vietnamita, el ucraniano y otros, también la motivaron a continuar desarrollando sus habilidades para hablar inglés.

“Tengo una amiga de Vietnam y quería compartir mi cultura con ella y que ella compartiera su cultura conmigo y fuera amiga”, dijo Carreón. “No quería que se sintiera como una desconocida”.

En general, Carreón dijo que sus clases de ELD eran “absolutamente su parte favorita de la preparatoria”.

“La gente en ELD entiende lo que es entrar en un mundo donde no se habla el mismo idioma”, dijo Carreón. “Se han convertido en mis mejores amigos aquí”.

A medida que avanza hacia esta siguiente fase de la vida, Loany dijo que se siente valiente y nerviosa al mismo tiempo.

Wagner, who currently serves as the assistant athletic director at North Eugene High School, will officially start with the district in August, but is eager to begin working in Bethel.

The longtime coach and assistant athletic director said that the growing Bethel community has a lot of potential that he’s excited to explore.

“Bethel is a goldmine of opportunity,” Wagner said. “It’s steadily growing with a ton of potential and I look forward to being able to grow sports programming in all grade levels.”

Wagner said that the fact that Bethel only has one high school allows for a lot of opportunity.

“With it being a one high school district there’s a lot of capabilities to create a full K-12 experience,” he said. “We want kids to grow up excited about eventually playing at WHS. This isn’t just a WHS program but a whole program within Bethel, and we want to create that excitement at the K-12 experience – where people are excited to get to the point when they’re wearing a WHS uniform jersey.”

Wagner has coached both girls and boys basketball at North Eugene High School and Springfield High School since 1998. He also has experience helping with football, baseball, softball, wrestling and several other sports at the high school level.

One of his strengths, he said, is that he is well-versed in running a quality program and helping build relationships with students and families.

“I’m really excited to be joining the Bethel team,” he said. “I can’t wait to get started.”

Wagner, quien actualmente se desempeña como director atlético asistente en la preparatoria de North Eugene, comenzará oficialmente con el distrito en agosto, pero está ansioso por comenzar a trabajar en Bethel.

El entrenador y director atlético asistente desde hace mucho tiempo dijo que la creciente comunidad de Bethel tiene mucho potencial que está emocionado de explorar.

“Bethel es una mina de oro de oportunidades”, dijo Wagner. “Está creciendo constantemente con un montón de potencial y espero poder hacer crecer la programación deportiva en todos los niveles de grado”.

Wagner dijo que el hecho de que Bethel solo tenga una preparatoria permite muchas oportunidades.

Throughout these challenges, Bethel students and staff rose to the occasion and achieved a tremendous feat. The Willamette High school graduation rate for the class of 2021 exceeded 90%, and the Bethel School District graduation rate exceeded 84%. This represents a district graduation rate higher than neighboring 4J and Springfield School Districts.
