The new KHS Community Builds shop is located at the Bethel Farm, behind Prairie Mountain School,

After years of planning, designing, fundraising and construction, a new shop is now complete for the KHS Community Builds program.

The new program will allow students to construct tiny homes in partnership with local non-profits to provide affordable housing options for our greater community.

Watch this video to see how helping to build the shop at the Bethel Farm behind Prairie Mountain School is one of many programs in which Kalapuya students have been actively involved, including the summer Farm Camp for elementary students, the Farm Crew and Trail Crew.

The KHS Community Builds shop was made possible by community donations, grants, and Bethel district funds. Those who helped make the project possible include grants from the Evergreen Hill Fund, an Anonymous Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation, the Niemeyer Foundation, as well as in-kind contributions from Riverbend Concrete, Wildish Construction, E & Z Concrete, Sierra Pacific Lumber, the Pape Foundation, Presentation Design Group and Jerry’s Home Improvement.

Celebrating Black History Month https://www.bethel.k12.or.us/homepage/celebrating-black-history-month/ Thu, 17 Feb 2022 20:33:57 +0000 https://www.bethel.k12.or.us/?p=34720 Black History Month at Prairie Mountain School

Students at Prairie Mountain are recognizing Black History Month in a creative AND educational way.

A collection of large poster boards located outside of the school showcase a series of historical Black figures who have influenced America in one way or another. The people highlighted, however, are not well-known – and that was intentional on the part of the students.

“We wanted to spread awareness about Black History Month,” said Abby Akins, a seventh-grade student at Prairie Mountain. “Before starting this project, I didn’t even know that some of these people even existed. They’re important people in our history, they’ve contributed to society in a number of ways and we should honor them.”

About 80 students in the Prairie Mountain Leadership group came up with the idea to showcase African-American figures who are not as well-known as those such as Martin Luther King Jr. or Rosa Parks.

The large signs are prominently featured outside the school during pickup and drop-off and feature a high resolution photo as well as some brief facts about the person chosen. A QR code is also located on each poster board so that anyone who wants to learn more about the featured historical figure can do so by holding their phone camera up to the code, which automatically takes them to a website with more information.

“Black History Month is important because we need to respect all people” said fifth-grade student Kamaha’o Thompson. “It’s interesting to learn about new people and the way they’ve changed the world.”

Planned Safety Drill https://www.bethel.k12.or.us/prairie-mountain/planned-safety-drill/ Thu, 03 Feb 2022 20:48:28 +0000 https://www.bethel.k12.or.us/?p=34253 Dear Prairie Mountain students and families,

I’m reaching out with some information about upcoming safety-related drills. Next week, students and staff will practice lockdown drills as a school. We will discuss these drills with students prior to them taking place and provide information to our students about why we’re practicing such drills.

These are rehearsals that we hope to never have to implement. However, we practice these drills to ensure that everyone knows what to do in the event of an emergency.

In an effort to provide families with an adequate heads up about such safety drills, I’m including some information about how these drills will be practiced next week.

On Thursday, February 10th 2022, we will be participating in a lockdown drill. “Lockdown” is a term used in the event of a threat or perceived threat at or near our school. During the drill on Thursday, an intercom announcement will inform staff and students that the drill will begin. Staff will then be asked to secure their classrooms.  Teachers will lock classroom doors, close the blinds, move students away from the windows, turn out the lights and remain quiet. The drill will last about three minutes, at which point another announcement will be made that the drill is over. Depending on grade level, teachers will also share that in the event of imminent danger, they may ask students to help barricade the door to make sure no one can enter the classroom or ask students to quickly evacuate the building.

Teachers will inform students that during all of our safety drills, the most important thing for them to do is to listen to adult directions. Staff will also talk about ways that they can keep themselves safe from danger in dangerous situations.

All information shared with students is age-appropriate and tailored to each grade level. If you do not want your student to participate in this drill, please notify me.

Tools that teachers will use during these conversations are housed on our district’s safety page, complete with scripts that will be used during drills and videos that summarize some safety drills. The scripts and videos were created by the District Safety Committee and videos were created in partnership with Eugene Police Department.

As always, feel free to contact me for clarification or more information. Thank you for your partnership to help ensure a safe school environment for all.

Sincerely,

Jaime Noack

Safety Drill

Sinceramente,

Jaime Noack
