With the governor’s recent announcement that school will not reopen this year, we are all feeling different things.  As I speak to faculty and staff, the overwhelming mixed feelings are of sadness and optimism.   We are sad because we really miss our students and watching them grow in our classrooms and school every day.  We are made optimistic by our regular contact and check-ins and our spirits are lifted as we see them engage with each other and with the remote learning activities.

Sadly, most of our traditional celebrations of learning: concerts, field trips, plays, the chess tournament, assemblies and performances, will all need to be cancelled for the final months of school.  I truly regret that we will not be able to celebrate your children’s growth this year with these events and recognitions.  Information about alternative recognitions and transition activities will follow.

In place of regular school days, remote learning will continue.  The MBE staff continues to create and refine learning experiences for all students, and I remain very proud of staff for their teamwork and innovation in these unprecedented and challenging circumstances.  As we plan for the remaining seven weeks of the school year, we continue to look for ways to optimize remote learning.  We continue to seek ways to engage all students while supporting social and emotional needs at the same time.

We realize that this school year is like no other, and parents and families may be in need of support as well.  To answer this need, our Clinical Team has initiated weekly virtual meetings of a parent/caregiver support group.  Please note the announcements below from our clinical team as well as a note from our PTA about a plant distribution scheduled for Saturday.

In honor of Earth Day, Arbor Day, and in appreciation for the MBE community, the PTA and the Sheffield Land Trust are teaming up on Saturday April 25th to distribute Lilac Saplings for families to plant.  The saplings will be distributed in the front drop-off circle of the school.  In observance of social distancing guidelines, we ask that you sign up for a time slot through sign-up genius.  The saplings are currently in their “dormant” state with bare roots. Con el reciente anuncio del gobernador de que la escuela no volverá a abrir este año, todos sentimos cosas diferentes. Mientras hablo con la facultad y el personal, los abrumadores sentimientos encontrados son de tristeza y optimismo. Estamos tristes porque realmente extrañamos a nuestros estudiantes y los vemos crecer en nuestras aulas y en la escuela todos los días. I hope this finds everyone well.  I am writing with some preliminary information about remote learning for students of Muddy Brook.  As all are aware, the current status of our school is that we will be closed until at least May 4 per order of the governor.  The commissioner of education directed that all public schools prepare and implement a system of remote learning to begin in early April.  The commissioner’s letter to families about remote learning is attached.

Aiming to provide for the educational needs of our students, Muddy Brook is developing a remote learning program: MBE School at Home.  As I write, teams of teachers are planning lessons and learning activities that will be accessed by parents and students through the MBE School at Home site.  We hope to introduce the site on Friday with classrooms ‘going live’ on Monday, April 6.   More communication will follow on Thursday with log-in and other instructions.

MBE School at Home will use the Google Classroom platform to organize daily instruction and be a conduit for teacher-student communication.  We will also use a virtual meeting tool (Google Hangouts Meet) to keep teachers connected to students and students connected to their classmates.  It is intended that the school at home day will encompass about 2.5 to 3 hours.  We will strive to maintain academic skills, keep minds active, and keep kids connected.

In addition to supporting our students’ learning needs, Muddy Brook remains a committed partner for students, families, staff, and community members who may be in need of support during this difficult and stressful time.  To this end, the district has established a Family Support email hotline (FamilySupport@bhrsd.org) that will be staffed M-F from 8AM-4PM.  Community members needing support are encouraged to use this hotline to connect with a member of our clinical team.  If you already have a connection with a clinical support team member at BHRSD, please reach out to that person before using the hotline.

There is much work to do before the launch of MBE School at Home on Monday.  Pausing the school year and then recreating school for a home experience has been an enormous task.  Many technical, instructional, and logistical challenges remain including the deployment of tech devices to students and families.  This work is ongoing, and families identified in need of tech for learning will be contacted in the next few days.

I am very proud of and grateful to the Muddy Brook faculty and staff for their creative and collaborative work during this time of great stress and uncertainty.  During the first week of MBE School at Home, I anticipate we’ll be adapting and fine-tuning the many systems needed for remote learning, and I thank you for your patience as we move forward.

By now you have probably read the news from our superintendent or heard that our school closure has been extended until May 4.  In response to the extended closure, we will be implementing a more structured program of home learning on April 6.  Details about this program will follow in communication from teachers and the school next week.

Important Food Service News:

Families that have been picking up daily school meals are informed that beginning tomorrow, March 27, and through the time schools are closed, we will be offering bags of food for pick up and delivery only on Fridays. We will no longer be serving daily meals for pickup.  The weekly bags will have food for breakfasts and lunches for the following week for your students.

There are four pickup sites – behind the Great Barrington Fire Department, in the parking lot at the Housatonic Dome, at the Stockbridge Town Hall on the side by the tennis court, and in the front student drop off at Monument Valley middle school.

I’m writing on day four of our school closure and hoping that this finds everyone well and making the best of this unusual situation.

For this week and the next week, we have been considering the student activities posted on the website to be mainly enrichment activities.  In other words, we are not considering completion of these activities as ‘instruction’ that takes the place of what we do in school.

Administrators are now discussing how to expand and perhaps formalize learning at home in ways that will not just keep students busy but may also keep them moving ahead in their growing skills.  Many of the resources we would use are online and would require that each student have access to a laptop or desktop that is internet-connected.  If yours is not a home with access to internet, I’d like to know.  Please call or email me directly if this is the case.  As we move forward with planning for remote instruction, there are resources and work-arounds that will allow all students to participate.

As we move into week two of our school closure and as the nature of daily lives continues to change, I hope that all parents have allies, friends, contacts, and support systems in place.  To this end, I am working with the PTA to set up networks of ‘partner families’: groups of two to three family units who simply commit to having regular check-ins with each other.  These check-ins could be a phone conversation or a Skype where partners share ideas for kid activities.  I hope that parents find an understanding ear that can listen, validate, and support.  For now I’m just asking for parents to think about this idea and if you would be willing to to be a support (and perhaps be supported) by another parent.  We’ll reach out with more detailed information and sign-up instructions next week.

Escribo el día cuatro del cierre de nuestra escuela y espero que esto encuentre a todos bien y aproveche al máximo esta situación inusual.

Para esta semana y la próxima semana hemos estado considerando que las actividades de los estudiantes publicadas en el sitio web son principalmente actividades de enriquecimiento. I hope all is well with your family in this extraordinary time. I want to make sure you have updated information on a regular basis, which for now will be daily. School will be closed for three weeks through April 6, 2020, as per Governor Charlie Baker. There will not be activities for students or families, nor access to school or district buildings, during this time period.

The District will be providing lunch, along with breakfast for the following morning, to students in our district community beginning tomorrow.  These meals will be available to all students who would benefit from the service. Food will be distributed daily from 11:30 am-12:30 pm at Du Bois Regional Middle School, where you will drive up to the front circle to pick up.  If you need this resource and cannot make it to Monument Valley for pick up, we will have other pick-up locations:  in front of the West Stockbridge Town Hall, behind the Stockbridge Town Hall, in front of the Housie Dome and behind the Great Barrington Fire Department.  Please stay in your car and the meals will be brought to you.

Many of you have already reached out to our Food Service Department and have requested meals for your students.  Please be advised that meal service will be distributed on a daily basis (Monday – Friday) and is restricted to students currently enrolled at BHRSD (1 breakfast & 1 lunch per student per day).   Our meals at this time will be “cold” (ie. PBJ, Deli Sandwiches, or similar food that we feel is safer for transport) to the locations already designated. If you have any questions or concerns, please email the Food Service Department at meals@bhrsd.org or contact Kathy Sullivan, Director at (413) 644-2325 or (855)255-8666.  At this time, we are unable to provide meals to adults, but have received significant community interest and many food donations.  We are working toward being able to provide those foods to you on a weekly (1 time/week) basis, most likely on Fridays.

On the web page, you will find links to student-learning resources by grade. Teachers are adding new resources regularly, and we are adding helpful links to other learning resources that might interest students.

The activities are aligned to our curriculum but the work is not for any particular credit at this time. More like a summer reading assignment, the activity will keep students fresh and ready to return to school.  Feel free to supplement with ideas and activities you think will be interesting to your child.

En la página web, encontrará enlaces a recursos de aprendizaje de los alumnos por grado. Los maestros están agregando nuevos recursos regularmente, y estamos agregando enlaces útiles a otros recursos de aprendizaje que podrían interesar a los estudiantes.

Las actividades están alineadas con nuestro plan de estudios, pero el trabajo no es para ningún crédito en particular en este momento. Más como una tarea de lectura de verano, la actividad mantendrá a los estudiantes frescos y listos para regresar a la escuela. Siéntase libre de complementar con ideas y actividades que cree que serán interesantes para su hijo.

As Superintendent Dillon shared, the district schools will be closed beginning on Monday, March 16 for two weeks.  We will continue to monitor the situation and provide regular updates. From 8:00-11:00 am on Monday, Nurse Becki and Nurse Patrick will be at Monument Valley for all district families to pick up medication or medical equipment.  If you are unable to come during that time, please reach out to your building principal.  After that time, the buildings will be closed to the public.  We will respond to phone calls and emails throughout our closure.

Early next week, we will be posting learning resources for parents to use with students on our school website.  While these materials cannot replace the experiences of a school day, it is my hope that they will keep students’ minds active and practicing what they are learning in school.

Please look for emails next week from the superintendent and from the principals. We are very concerned about the health and safety of our students and families, and are responding to the situation with an overabundance of caution.  Please reach out to me or the office if you have questions or concerns.

Como compartió el superintendente Dillon, las escuelas del distrito estarán cerradas a partir del lunes 16 de marzo durante dos semanas.
