Week at a Glance, News and Notes

June 9, 2023

Note from the Principal:

Things are really getting busy as we wrap up the school year.  Only two weeks left until the summer!!!  Our fifth graders and seventh graders did their annual treks to Pleasant Valley for the Audubon field days.  Our sixth graders had their annual field day at French Park.  The eighth graders go next week to Catamount and the Cove, and the afternoon at French Park.  The seventh grade is on their Boston field day today!  And I just returned from a trip to Philadelphia with the Du Bois Legacy Project.  So much learning happens in the classroom, but so much also happens when kids can get real with field study.  That is where content comes alive, and where students have to put their social-emotional learning to work.  I am so indebted to the educators in this learning community who are creative and develop these intensive learning experiences for our students.

Please drop me a note if you have feedback or questions at ben.doren@bhrsd.org

May 19, 2023

Note from the Principal:

Miles Wheat, our principal next year, announced a few weeks ago that we also have a new Assistant Principal to step into the role as he takes the helm at the middle school.  I am really excited that Ellie Rizzo will take on the role.  Ellie has run our Autism and Behavior Center (ABC program) at Du Bois for many years.  She is an expert in program development and coordination, staff supervision, student inclusion and management, curriculum and instructional adjustments, data and systems, and collaborative problem solving.  Miles and Ellie will make a great team, and compliment each other very well.  I am so excited for the school next year, as so much of what we have built over the past years will continue and grow.

Please drop me a note if you have feedback or questions at ben.doren@bhrsd.org

Note from the Principal:

It was Educator Appreciation Week!  We provided a lunch and a breakfast for our staff, as food is always a kind way to say thank you!  I use the term “educator” because it encompasses all of our amazing teachers and the other folks who take a part in educating our children: paraprofessionals, secretaries, maintenance and food service staff.  It takes a village to raise a child, and our village is a good place to be!  Please take some time to send a note of appreciation or do something nice for an educator in your child’s life.  We work really hard to make this school the best darn middle school in the world, and appreciation goes a long way in keeping our spirits high!

Week at a Glance, News and Notes

April 28, 2023

Note from the Principal:

We jumped back into school after April break with some serious middle school energy!  This is the time of year where we take advantage of the months of learning and engaging with each other.  Students know how to be a student in their grade, and we are focusing on putting all of the learning this year together with final projects and activities for each grade.

It is also the time of year that grades do end of year field trips and celebrations.  Be on the lookout for information in the next weeks about end of year activities, and especially permission slips–it really helps to get those in early when your kid brings them home.  There will be end of year activities in fifth, sixth and seventh grades, and especially in eighth, where we need to celebrate our oldest as they prepare to move on to high school next year!

Please drop me a note if you have feedback or questions at ben.doren@bhrsd.org

Postural Screening update

On Monday, May 1st, the Health Office and PE teachers will be completing the 2023 postural screenings.  The purpose of the Postural Screening is to identify early signs of potential spinal problems in children in grades 5-9. This is not a diagnostic service, but rather a program to identify those young people who should have further medical evaluation.  The majority of students exhibit no unusual findings in this screening, however, if your child does exhibit anything unusual, you will be notified and asked to take your child to a physician as a precaution. If nothing unusual is found, we will not contact you again until next year’s screening.  Your child may wish to bring a two-piece swimsuit or a halter top and shorts  to school the day of the screening. This type of clothing permits a more accurate observation of the child’s back. I will have additional shirts on hand if needed.  Parents and/or legal guardians can request that their child not participate in this screening. This request must be submitted in writing to the school nurse.  Please remember to send in a copy of your child’s latest physical.  If you have any questions, please contact Nurse Hilary Bashara at 413-644-2324 or hilary.bashara@bhrsd.org.

Week at a Glance, News and Notes

April 20, 2023

Note from the Principal:

Greetings from the middle of our April break!  We had a fabulous Spirit Week leading up to the break this week.  The student council organized spirit wear days–different decades, formal day, etc.–for each day of the week.  The best was the culmination in a pep rally at the end of the week on Friday afternoon in the gym.  It is important to get together as a full community to celebrate ourselves periodically through a school year.  We stopped doing it so regularly during the pandemic, and it is time we get back to more regular connections.  The whole school got to see each other right before we left for a vacation, and there were fun activities.  Grades had specific colors they represented, and there were games and silly activities that just brought the students and staff to laugh and enjoy each other for a moment.  We take school very seriously for so much for each week and the year, it is really good just to let loose together and appreciate us as a community.

Another great milestone is the Shakespeare and Company residency in our seventh grade.  Every year S&Co come for an eight week engagement with our students to put on a play.  This year it was Romeo and Juliet–the actors came every Thursday and worked with all five English classes–all the seventh graders.  Then this past Thursday the entire seventh grade put on the play at S&Co in Lenox, right on the main stage.  It is a wonderful event, and great to see every student in a role, and all the families gathered to watch.

Enjoy these last days of break, and we will see everyone on Monday!

Please drop me a note if you have feedback or questions at ben.doren@bhrsd.org

Be well,

Ben Doren
