Extended School Year (ESY) Program Information

The Extended School Year (ESY) program is designed for students at risk of substantial regression of skills that have been developed during the school year. The decision to offer ESY is based on data collected during the school year indicating a risk of substantial regression over school breaks. This data collection informs the IEP Team of the need for proposing extended school-year services during the summer. In addition, there are some students participating in specialized programs who require services and programming to prevent substantial regression and to provide a continuation of learning support. Please note that not all students with IEPs require extended school-year services.

This year, we will have staggered program start dates to meet individual student needs. The ESY program will begin on July 1st, 2025, for some students in specialized special education programs, while other students will start the week of July 7th, 2025. Should your child qualify for ESY, the exact start date for your child will be determined based on their IEP goals and services. You will receive direct communication from your school’s special education staff and/or the district regarding your child’s schedule. Please note that the end date for all programs will be by August 7th, 2025.

Eligibility for the ESY Program

Eligibility for the ESY program is not based on whether a student will benefit from additional services but rather on the need to prevent significant regression. The decision is made by the special education team using the following criteria:

Recoupment Concerns: Data showing that the student is at risk of substantial regression over the summer, requiring significant time to regain lost skills when school resumes.
Severity of Disability: Students with more severe or complex disabilities may require ESY services to maintain critical skills for continued progress.
Other Factors: The IEP team will also consider factors such as the student’s age, current level of functioning, transition needs, and overall educational requirements

Transportation Notes:
--The district will share pick-up and drop-off details before the start of the program for families requiring yellow bus transportation. Bus stops will remain the same as during the school year.
--For students attending ESY programs at the Boardwalk Campus that end at 12:00PM, there will be designated stops at the Community Education locations: Parker Damon Building and RJ Grey Junior High School
-- For students requiring specialized van transportation, CASE Transportation will reach out directly to proivude pick-up/drop-off information and times.
